There is a reason behind certain differences between biological structures and cognitive behaviors of males and females. What is equality? What is gender? And what is gender equality? Gender equality is a view that men and women should have equal rights or opportunities and not be favored against based on their gender. However, gender has played an important part in the society since the beginning of time. If we look back throughout history, society has placed a serious expectation of what women and men should be like. The debate of gender equality in the society has always been a controversial and divisive topic. Some believe that gender equality is possible, while some likely disagree with it because they think that men are still superior to women no matter what. One of the many things the society can do to combat the belief that men are superior to women is providing higher education for men and women. Education would lead to opportunities, opportunities lead to gender equality, and gender equality leads to a productive society.

Equality is an enormous topic when it comes to our society and it has been for a long time. Today everything is a lot more equal between race and economic classes but it is still a concern today. The main topic about male and female equality is such a major subject it is one of the most talked about social issues in America, and in the past few years more than ever.

Ed Koch, a lawyer and politician, once said, “Stereotypes lose their power when the world is found to be more complex than the stereotype would suggest. When we learn that individuals do not fit the group stereotype, then it begins to fall apart. That quote was given over almost years ago by Ed Koch, yet the society that we inhabit today not only embraces stereotypes, but perpetuates them, especially through the means of media. What is to be said about a nation that has made leaps and bounds in the areas of racial equality, gender equality and even marriage equality in just the last fifty years? What is to be said about a society that has made all of these advancements in equality, yet still sustains stereotypes that have been around for over a century? To me, it says that we haven’t made that much progress at all. Little to no progress can be made when scripted television shows are perpetuating negative stereotypes of people to sheltered audiences. So, ultimately, fictitious television shows that follow a script, whether it be reality television or not, does uphold and spread negative stereotypes about marginalized groups, while painting a near-perfect portrait of those that are considered to be in the majority. This essay will focus on both the underrepresentation and misrepresentation of African Americans, Latinos/Latinas and people belonging to the LGBT community, within scripted television shows.

Historically, women have always been seen as the subordinate gender. Considered weaker, more emotional, and less intelligent or capable than their male counterparts, women have been trying for decades to overcome adversity and get to a point where they can be taken seriously in a patriarchal world. Though progress has been made, there is still a long way to go until true gender equality is established.

Feminism is the belief that people of all different backgrounds should be treated justly and fairly. Feminists believe that all people deserve equal pay to those in the same job. Otherwise put, “Feminism is an interdisciplinary approach to issues of equality and equity based on gender, gender expression, gender identity, sex, and sexuality as understood through social theories and political activism.” (EKU “What is Feminism?”) Such as, if a man in the same job doing the same things as a woman in that same job, they should be treated as equals. They should both earn the same amount of money for the job that they do. However, the wage gap is pushing this away from well-working women. If a man earns one dollar, a woman today earns just seventy-nine cents. This is unacceptable in many ways. Women are no different from men. They both can be hardworking and loyal employees. Sexism in the workplace is pushing single mothers and women back farther to being able to support themselves and support their families.

Throughout the past few decades, the gender inequality discourse have became a dominant feature of international, national and local policy debate on the subject of economic development. This policy concern has emerged as an area of scholarly research which seeks to show that improving gender equity leads to economic growth.

According to the dictionary, the definition of gender equality is the state in which access to rights or opportunities is unaffected by gender. Gender inequality is happening, where women have less control over resources, less power than males, and fewer opportunities across social, economic, and political life. Gender inequality is happening because of women’s physical difference in education, work pay and job opportunities, family and culture, religion, and government. This is due to the stereotypical thoughts of women being weaker than men. Because of their physical difference, people tend to discriminate towards women. As a result, this serves as the basis of gender inequality. In this part of the report, I, Irine Chong will explain to you what Gender Inequality is, and how it is impacting women’s rights ALL around the world.

Throughout the last century, women have had to fight to have the same opportunities as men. Women have had to earn the right to vote, the right to have a career, and the right to autonomy. However, these are all rights that men have simply been given, which is why today’s feminists work to promote equality. Despite these efforts, feminism is often misunderstood and is interpreted with a negative connotation. According to a study conducted by Precopio and Ramsey (2017), “feminism is commonly recognized as a movement driven to grant social, political, and economic equality to both women and men.” The participation of others besides women is crucial to the spread of equality among the genders. Furthermore, the stigma and negative feelings surrounding feminism must be reduced in order for the ideals of feminism to have a greater impact.

Although Feminism was already a topic I knew a lot about, I wanted to learn more about in order to be able to effectively explain it to people. I hoped to learn what feminism truly is, how it fit into gender equality, some good examples of feminism, and what feminism is still working for. I was hoping to learn all this in order to be able to show and tell people what feminism is, and to help get rid of any misunderstandings towards feminism. I also wanted to make sure I had my facts right about what I am often arguing for. What I basically learned is that unlike popular belief, feminism is actually the belief in the equality of all sexes. This includes equal opportunities in politics, economics, personal, and social life, as well as equal rights to education and employment. Through much research, I also learned everything else I wanted to know about feminism.

Equality between Women and Men, or Gender Equality, means equality of rights and freedoms. For equal opportunities for participation, recognition and appreciation of women and men, In all areas of society, political, economic, labor, personal and family.

In its most broad definition gender equality refers to the equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities of women and men and girls and boys. Gender equality implies that the interests, needs and priorities of both, women and men are taken into consideration, recognizing the diversity of different groups, women and men. However different activist groups have their own specific definitions, each with the same core values. They can be more simply defined as any situation in which one person is "treated less favourably" than another on the basis of gender (Callanan, & Heslin, 2001).

Centuries after another and now the present, the twenty-first century still faces a huge issue towards the acceptance of gender equality. Nonetheless, women are unappreciated in today’s society’s workforce. But for Sheryl Sandberg, who wrote the article “Lean In”, believes that any women in the world could be whoever they want to be. Sandberg inspires many girls of today’s generation for being a successful woman who followed her dreams and not let inequalities and gender roles affect her. Through Sandberg’s hard work, she became the COO of Facebook and eventually became a billionaire. Her success story was shared on her essay where she stated encouraging aspects of how women should be. Such as, leaning into their careers instead of stepping back to focus on family. In addition, Sandberg concludes that women shouldn’t be afraid of pursuing their ambition because of the negative views that they may receive or even the fear of failing. In other hand, the author of “Beyond Lean In”, Bell Hooks argues that leaning in is maybe not for everyone. Hooks criticizes Sandberg about her views of how women should be because Hooks thinks that Sandberg did not consider the women with different backgrounds. Furthermore, Hooks did not ignore the fact that some women struggles to succeed in the workforce due to their race and social class. Hooks points out a very legitimate fact, because she actually looks at different types of women while Sandberg might not be able to relate to that because

I have come to realize that as much as people say that all humans are created equal, it is not often that they are actually treated that way. My inspiration is derived from a desire to promote equality in society, to live in a world where people don't find themselves at a disadvantage by default based on their gender, skin color, or sexuality.
