Gay Marriage Should Be Legal

Within our society and the western hemisphere, it is believed that only a man and a woman should be allowed to participate in the sacred ritual of marriage. These beliefs are instilled through the socialization of society and family. Our society illustrates marriage through the media. Our family illustrates marriage by first hand experience. In a traditional family, we perceive a man and a woman as our parents. Traditionally, people marry with the expectation that reproduction will occur, and one will grow old along side of children, and grandchildren. There is an image to marriage, and the thought of altering that to include same sex unions is disturbing to many.

A gay couple from Indianapolis who have waited to marry for years have been quoted as saying: “We 're positive because the mindset in this nation seems to be that it is unconstitutional to say that our marriages are different from any other marriage.” (pro-con,1) This means that gay people are staying optimistic. Prohibiting gay marriage is considered discrimination to gays because the government is not giving homosexual couples the same rights as gay heterosexuals, which is also unconstitutional. Therefore, same-sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples. (pro-con,1)

Gay marriage has slowly become a significant factor amongst individuals of today’s society. On June 26, 2015, it was ruled out by the U.S. Supreme Court that gay marriage was now legal. The first thing that I thought was that “Wasn’t it already legal in the United States?” Well, apparently no it has not been legalized in the United States! (Dumb me.) The U.S. is known to be a nation of equality and gives everyone the freedom of the speech, but it is actually a nation full of racism, sexism, and homophobias. Our country gives us the freedom to do many things, but to gay couples they don’t have much freedom as others do. We are violating their freedom because we aren’t letting them marry the one they love, so to say that everyone in the U.S. has the freedom to do anything is wrong. Our civil rights and the Constitution give us many liberties. One of our civil liberties is the pursuit of happiness, which many homosexual people are not allowed to chase, but thanks to the new ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court homosexual people are allowed to chase it. They are being looked down at and are feeling ashamed of themselves because of all the cruelty that they are receiving. Homosexual people haven’t been able to fully express themselves until it was legalized for them to fully do so. They have been fighting for the right to be married to their same sex for about a decade now, and they have finally met their goal. #Lovewins.

For many years, gay marriage has been banned in most states in the United States. Today there are 14 out of 50 states who ban same-sex marriage but, things are changing and people are taking a stand in what they believe in (ProCon.org.). However, some people still don’t find gay marriage socially acceptable. In 2008, California’s Congress passed Proposition 8 which claimed that gay marriage was unacceptable. This caused controversy with their views that homosexual relationships were “unworthy of respect, dignity, and status that society accords to marriages”(Olson). Conservatives and fundamentalist suspect that if gay marriages were accepted and legal in all states, our country would eventually become weak and our society would become at risk. They claim that it would somehow lead to legalized polygamy and interspecies marriages which would tear our country apart. The Marriage Debate states that the Supreme Court shouldn’t allow the political processes of the states to debate on whether same-sex marriage should be legal because it would then lead the states to begin to discriminate and cause pain and humiliation to gay men, lesbians, and their kids for as long as they wish. Therefore, the Constitution forbids this. I believe if homosexuals want to express their love through getting their marriage legalized, it should be acceptable in all states.

Gay marriage is in fact a controversial topic that many people feel strongly about. I believe that gay marriage should be legalized without being penalized by people who disagree with it. I will, within reason, explain to you why gay marriage should be legalized and argue against Karlee’s essay about why gay marriage shouldn’t be legalized.

“We’re here, we’re queer, get over it.” In 1990, these words, shouted and displayed proudly on signs waved by the activist group, Queer Nation, were revolutionary. Never, not since the Stonewall Riots, had non-straight, non-cis people been so vocal about their existence and demanded acceptance – something that straight people take for granted on a daily basis. However, in the years since the Riots, LGBT activism has become much more mainstream, no longer whispered about behind closet doors or something to be wholly ashamed of. Gay marriage is legal in all 50 United States, something that has been fought for since the conception of the LGBT movement. In fact, gay couples are routinely being featured on popular television and other forms of media. Some might say that in 2016, the dreams of the rioters in Stonewall have been realized. Marriage rights and the spotlight on nighttime television; equality seems to truly be right on the horizon.

Since gay marriage has been legalized in a handful of states, there have been more than 71,165 marriages (12 Reasons Why Marriage Equality Matters). However, there are hundreds happy couples that would like to be married all over the country. The real question is why does gay marriage matter to someone who is not gay? Does it make people question their own sexuality or go against religion? The LGBT community has rights just like everyone else, and a love that is true just an opposite-sex couples. There are 37 states out of the 50, which is over half, that gay marriage has been legalized in (Gay Marriage ProCon.org.). Gay marriage should widely be accepted by all the states and society.

The United States has been divided on LGBTQ issues for a long time, and last year when the Supreme Court ruled that gay marriage was legal, many states have tried to discover creative ways to ignore the law or pass bills that restrict LGBT rights. Since gay marriage has become legal in all fifty states, many activists have taken to focusing on gaining more equality for transgender people. States, such as Mississippi and North Carolina, have also tried to pass anti-transgender bathroom laws. These laws have caused massive backlash but have also received support from many citizens. The laws require people to go to the bathroom that corresponds with the gender on their birth certificate. Not only are these laws almost impossible to enforce, they openly discriminate against transgender people, encourage hate, and affect people who are transgender negatively, mentally and physically. The bathroom has become a political battleground for civil rights in America, and it is imperative to the nation’s future civil rights liberties how the bathroom debate is handled.

Before the ruling on June 26, 2015 for gay marriage to be legal in all fifty states, thirty seven out of the fifty and Washington D.C already legalized gay marriage. Many support gay marriage and many do not, with widespread values and reasons for and against it. Due to religion and rights people across the nation have differing views and opinions of it.In a five to four vote in the Supreme Court gay marriage became legalized in all fifty states. Shortly after that a few marriage officiators and marriage licenses people began refusing services and documents for gay marriage.Some states also started placing bans on gay marriage. Everyone is allowed their own bias on the issue, but take a moment and think about all the reasons the other side has.The legalizing of gay marriage should be accepted and acknowledged in all fifty states.

What if you met someone and fell deep in love? What if they meant everything in the world to you? Wouldn’t you do whatever it takes to make them happy? What if i told you that you couldn’t? and that no matter how much you showed someone that you are meant to be that you couldn’t marry them? Wouldn’t that tear you apart inside?. “The Human Rights Campaign Foundation states that 4 - 10 young people live in a community that doesn’t except them or who they choose to love”( as cited in HRC.org 2014). Gay Marriage should be legal in all states and it should be allowed the same benefits of hetroexual marriage,because This central idea of traditional marriage is inaccurate ,everyone should have the chance to marry who they love, and stable gay marriage homes benefits adoption practices worldwide.

Gay marriage is a topic that is widely discussed and debated similar to racism or women’s rights, but now that gay marriage is legal people are still trying to ban their freedom statewide. All American couples deserve decent health care, spousal death benefits, and all other privileges afforded through marriage. Same sex unions should not be different from heterosexual marriages.

Gay marriage is between partners of the same sex. Gay marriage is one of the most controversial issues in the modern world. For the past thousand years, marriage has been known to be the social union between a man and a women. In most cultures around the world, homosexuality was seen as wrong, and marriages between same-sex couples was forbidden.

For many years, marriage has always been a covenant between a man and a woman which is a nature ordered and a social norm. A family is created by a lawful marriage of a man and a woman which leads to the procreation and education of their children. However, calling something marriage does not make it marriage is a big issue that needs to be discussed in this topic today: Same sex marriage. In facts, there are still two different opposite perspectives between the supporters and the protesters.

On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled that the US Constitution guarantees the right for same-sex couples to marry. This is additional proof of something we have been taught in schools all our lives. America is the land of the free, which gives each legal citizen the right of privacy, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion. If you are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or Buddhist, you are welcome in this country.

In the United States, same sex marriage became legal nationwide on June 26, 2015, when the United States Supreme Court overruled the court in favor of same sex freedom and marriage. The victory of same sex marriage came to be recognized from the Obergefell v. Hodges case which was submitted when an American Ohio man was denied and regretted to get his name on his late husband’s death certificate. Same sex marriage has been a controversial social issue in the United States for several decades. Since, the United Supreme Court dismissed the Baker v. Nelson case on October 10, 1972. This was one of the very few first cases brought forward by same sex couples in regards of denial of a marriage license. Furthermore, it caused more issues when Maryland became the first state to ban same sex marriage between same gender couples on January 1, 1973. Maryland also released a Family Law Code states, “Only a marriage between a man and woman is valid in this State.” (“History and timeline to marry in the United States”). However, if anyone is opposed to legalizing same sex marriage, it is generally assumed that the opposing supporters have hatred, discrimination, or any other such negative motions towards same sex marriage and their faithful supporters. Unfortunately, there’s supporting, legitimate reasons as to why gay marriage should not be legalized. With that said, I believe that same sex should be illegal.
