The next morning, as soon as the last crumb was gone, Delmar rose and held his hand out to help Charlotte to her feet. Cicely scrambled to her feet on her own. All three followed the thirsty ox down the trail toward a narrow little creek. As the big animal pulled toward the side of the creek, Delmar moved ahead and quickly filled the empty canteen. He saw Charlotte lean down beside him to dampen her handkerchief. When the big animal moved beside her she let out a squeal and reached out to steady herself, placing her hand on his thigh. Delmar remained, half crouched, staring up at her. He extended his arm to brace her and keep her from falling forward. He yelled for the boys who were too busy staring at the bear beside them to focus on reloading. Both began frantically to ready their rifles but it was clear that the animal was dead. It was the boys who rushed over to give the tangled couple a hand up. <><><> Charlotte didn’t want to, but she clung to the arm of the slim man beside her as she struggled down the dark trail beside the cart with its load of bear. The alternative of the hike was to ride with the dead animal and just the thought made her shudder. The hounds were following the loaded cart, occasionally barking, although the loud sounds couldn’t hide the fear in their voices. Cicely walked in the lead with the noisy young men leading the light colored ox. Charlotte slipped and wrapped her other hand around the strong arm, grateful for his support. When the glow of a lantern appeared up ahead, they both sighed in relief and increased the distance between them. <><><> “Who’s there?” a loud voice called. “Us Pa,” Ned hollered. “We found the new schoolmarm.” “We got the killer bar,” Ed shouted even …show more content…

There was a large roast of some kind on the table, a cold half-circle of cornbread, and a simmering pot of beans sitting on a folded towel in the center of the table. Charlotte knew good manners required that she wait for the others to return, but her growling stomach wouldn’t let her. Cicely started to break off some bread and Charlotte stood, looking for a knife. Carefully she cut the big half circle into eight wedges and put one slice on each of their plates. She repeated the process to slice a sliver of meat for each of them. Cicely reached over to spoon a huge pile of beans over both things on her plate and sat back
