Gail is the eldest sister in the Sapphires. She is a very protective of her sister and she blames herself if her sister gets in danger or they get in trouble because she thinks that she should prevent them from get hurt or trouble. “There's a reason that you're this... terrible mouth, and it’s very simple. Your mama bear... and they're your little baby cubs.” She does extremely well at ignoring the judgement throughout the film and shows the advantages of being an Aboriginal. Also Gail is a very tenacious person when she is doing something what she likes she shows this when she said “shut up I’m not finished. ok now I am finished” In this quote she is putting Dave back in his spot, because he thought she was finished. She is sometimes racist …show more content…
when the girl where singing people were talking and moving objects around to make sound so they wouldn’t have to listen to them. But when they started singing there were on their own until Dave started to play the piano, and Gail and Cynthia look at him. When they finished they no one clapped apart for the little boy. But everyone else just look at them and scrunch up their noses. When they walked off the stage everyone looks at them and gave them dirty look. When they were standing and waiting for the results Dave walked up to them and talked to them while everyone else won’t because of their colour. But when the results where announce they look up and the pub owner said it when it to Nolan and Dave said “that is dollshite. FIX FIX” when Dave said this he was standing up for the girl but when no one was saying it with him he quieted down. Wince he did the pub owner said “pick up your swags and go back to the gumpie” when saying this why walked out and no one said it was racist but no one said anything because that was how the coloured people got treated back
Jerry Spinelli the author of Maniac Magee developed the main character, Amanda Beale, using descriptive details, dialogue, actions, and thoughts. A character trait good for Amanda Beale is caring. Reasons why Amanda Beale is caring is because in some places in the book Amanda shows why she’s caring. The following quotes are reasons why Amanda is caring. The first quote is, “ ‘You’ll freeze to death in the winter. You’re fingers’ll get so stiff they’ll break like icicles.’ ” In this part of the book Amanda was worried that Maniac was going to leave the Beale’s house and is trying to convince him that he shouldn’t go. The second quote said, “Amanda was pedaling frantically up to him, slapping on a quick smile and gasping, ‘Hey, I’m going to the
Who Was John Reid Have you ever thought of a tutor going from tutoring, to falling in love, and too joining the American army as a spy… well John Reid is that guy from the book “Time Enough For Drums” By Ann Rinaldi. John Reid is a very brave, smart, and adventurous guy. John helped Jemima throughout her entire life basically and made her way more mature from the beginning of the book to the end. John Reid is a brave man from the 1700’s, I say this because he worked for the American army and did anything he could too protect Jemima. In the book, John Reid quoted that, “Your mother told you that, no wonder why I have been having trouble controlling you”(Rinaldi 84).
I have read the short story “Sheila Mant” by W.D. Wetherell. In this story a fourteen-year-old boy likes a girl and asks her to go to a concert with him. He takes her there on a canoe and encounters a dilemma when he has to choose between Sheila and the bass. In this journal, I will be predicting whether the boy will chose Sheila or the bass.
The character I will be discussing is Julia May Jackson. In the start of the book Julia
The Webster-Merriam does not have enough synonyms for strong to describe Sandra Kay Templeton. Were she more than a fictional character, her strength would only be matched by the greatest Olympians of our day. Holding a stronger role in the film adaptation of Big Fish, Sandra portrays strength, self awareness, grace and unconditional love for those closest to her. She is an admirable woman who inspired me throughout the novel.
A Scottish Proverb once said, “Do not judge by appearances; a rich heart may be under a poor coat.” This quote applies to the theme of the novel,“The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle” by Avi. The theme is don’t judge a book by its cover and in the quote, it says to not judge someone by appearances because they might be different than what you think. The first example is shown on page 24, “One always needs a final friend.”
Sue Monk Kidd has introduced very complex, yet simple characters that can be easily related to by many readers of the novel. Rosaleen has a tough exterior, but truly cares for Lily Owens, as T.Ray Owens is unpleasant, and considered to be abusive toward Lily. Further on, we have Zachary Taylor, a handsome, charismatic football player while working for August in her honey house develops feelings for Lily, as there’s June Boatright with a heart of gold, yet is distrusting in regards to Lily at first. These character are just a few of the many that entail the plot, and make them relatable. Although, like I said Sue Monk Kidd has developed many character that we can relate to, I believe I relate to Lily Owens the most in “The Secret Life of Bees.”
Once, a very wise anonymous Tumblr user said “Never be fooled by what you see on the outside, because what’s on the inside is a different story” We often forget people we meet in our daily lives have lives and different circumstances than us and that leads to the mistreatment of others. In The Truth About Sharks by Joan Bauer, this is shown between two characters, Beth and Madge P. Groton. This mistreatment changes Beth throughout the story, making her a dynamic character. At the beginning of the story, Beth was quite lazy and irritable, and had to go to her Uncle's birthday party. She needed to go get new pants for the party. She leaves to go to the mall, not caring to dress up at all. As she enters the store, she is eye’d down by the security guard, Madge P. Groton. Madge glared at her with suspicion because of how Beth looked. Beth goes and tries on pairs of pants before going to look some more, leaving on the pants from the store and all her belongings in the changing room. Beth is grabbed by Madge P. Groton and is falsely arrested for shoplifting the pants she had on. Madge used her power against to try to get Beth to take off the “stolen” pants, in which Beth refused to do so. Madge then calls the police to take Beth in, and starts to tell Beth how she’s seen kids like her, stereotyping her by how she looks. Before long, an officer is brought in and takes Beth back to his car. Beth then convinces him that if they go back in, she can prove her innocence. They go back in and to the salesperson
Mayella Ewell was a 19 year old girl who carried the weight of her own family. With a father who drinks up the money received from the government and a mother who died when Mayella was just a young girl; life was not easy for her. The Ewell family was known for farming and living right by the towns dump. Everything Mayella knew was taught by self experience. Mayella was a victim of abuse from both her family and society, however that still does cover that she was a true villain in the end.
The main character of this book is a thirteen-year-old girl named Charlotte Doyle. She is caring, brave, curious, and helpful. She is caring because when she hit Captain Jaggery, she didn’t mean to hit him, so she apologized because she knew that she made a mistake. Charlotte is brave because she was able to stand up for herself and Zachariah when getting hurt, she had the guts to grab the whip. I think that wanting to just get home, working through the uncomfort, or just getting off the ship is what motivates her. Yes, Charlotte Doyle is well developed by the author. He portrayed her as young, but brave girl who can take care of herself in situation, yet who is caring and kind-hearted. I agree with the way the character handled events
Gail has the strongest connection with Dave and that is show and built up as the film continues on, a major scene where Dave and Gail start to bond a bit more is when Gail is telling Dave the story of how Kay was taken from them, then once Gail had finished Dave had a little speech “everyone thinks you’re just a mouth on legs, this defensive argumentative old which, there’s a reason why your this terrible mouth and that’s because your mamma bear”, as this little speech is going there are close up shot that switch from Dave to Gail and it really shows them making a stronger bound furthermore, during the girls show Dave and Gail make eye contact and they both smile at each other for a while, which further shows that Dave is starting to belong with them. Dave really shows that he cares for the girls in one particular scene, when they are attacked just before going back on stage and Dave gets shot looking for Kay and Julie in the middle of an attack, then once Gail got back she read the letter that Dave gave her and he asked to marry her and he says “It would be a great honour to become a part of your family”, once Gail got to see him in the hospital she said yes to his
Gail Hayden comes from North Dakota, a place with different morals and values compared to Bentrock. She is able to see the racist attitudes shown towards Indians in a different light and believes it is wrong because she has been brought up in a different culture. She sees things differently than the natives in Bentrock and is able to decipher the racial propaganda. Her influence on Wes, making him investigate the allegations, could prove to be a major contribution to the catastrophe that overtakes the Hayden family. “That is not the way it works. You know that. Sins- crimes- are not supposed to go unpunished.” This quote shows her kind nature and the difference between her morals and values compared to a Bentrock native. She could prove to be a factor in the catastrophe, but could it solely be the Hayden’s to blame?
Meg Murry, a female heroine in the novel A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle, has to save her father from IT to bring her family back together. She goes through many obstacles during her journey. In the end, Meg accomplishes her goal to save her father and defeat IT with the help of Charles Wallace and Calvin. Throughout the novel, A Wrinkle in Time, Meg proves to be a character who shows trust, learns courage, and overcomes embarrassment. Meg Murry shows trust throughout her journey in the novel A Wrinkle in Time.
Gail’s ascendancy is further demonstrated at the beginning of the third paragraph, “Once she’d thoroughly trounced me in public, Gail ignored me and held court in her own corner every playtime.” (ll 21-22). This also represents Gail’s physical advantage and her independent ability of holding court in her “own corner”. Regardless of their conflicts, however, the narrator seems to admire Gail, which further demonstrates the idea of Gail’s supremacy; describing her as, “wiry and graceful” (l 19) and “she was so physically confident, in charge of her body even when she was five.”(ll
