For an example, when he started talking about his girlfriend, his voice would get high pitched and sounds like a girl. He also mimicked his girlfriend’s son voice, which now legally is his step son, and he made the voices of his and her friends, (Martin and the hookers.) Another Standup act he did he mentioned he did not like his girlfriend’s friends. He stated they were hookers. A lot of the jokes he used was about his weight, girlfriend and son, and personal experiences. One of the jokes he talks about is there used to be five categories of “Fatness.” He had explained there are now six categories. There is big, healthy, husky, fluffy, damn, and oh, hell no. I asked my husband what category I fell into and I was thinking, “oh, maybe I’m fluffy or something.” His response and with a bland look on his face was, “No! It’s more like oh, Hell No!! He was being dead serious too! There was one part where he almost tripped and instead of panicking, he made a joke about it. It was funny. He was quick to come up with something. It was about his weight. Another joke Iglesias uses was his son does not like to use deodorant, so when his son turned fifteen, he started putting deodorant all over the house, so his son would not forget to put it on. He had asked his son, “Did you put on deodorant?” And his son said, “Yes.” But, Gabriel knew he had lied and he told his son he would let it slide, but next time, and that is when his son had bulked up to him and
Gabriel is adamant about his dream and is truly “angry” when he comes home to his family praying to the Virgin because of Antonio’s grade promotion—both of which fit with the Luna philosophy, not that of the Márez (82). Antonio is subject to both of his parents’ expectations and desires for almost the entirety of the book, and this shapes who he is as he questions the philosophies of both the Luna and the Márez before finally deciding that he is “Márez first, then Luna,” as his uncle describes him (250), despite Ultima’s declaration that Antonio will be a “man of learning” (56). In a sense, Antonio is a “man of learning” as well as Márez—he seems to adopt portions of both philosophies in his efforts to discover who he truly is. However, it does show that he is trying to fit the expectations set forth by his parents, consciously or not, and this struggle to meet expectations is so prominent in the novel that this theme is one of the most consequential in Bless Me,
