Prior to last semester when I did the genetically modified organism (GMO) survey that was distributed by spring 2016 genetic lab students and went to the student research conference, I did not have any concerns about genetically modified (GM) foods since I thought it did not impact my life in any ways. I was wrong after learning about GM foods through reading articles and took the GMO quiz. Even though I learned about GMO before taking the quiz, I only got seven of eleven on the quiz. One of the quiz questions surprised me regarding how huge impact the GMO made in the United States market. According to the pbs.org website, 70% of the products being distributed in US market contain at least one GM ingredients. I chose the right answer for that question through guessing, but having confirmations on the issue made me realized that I still did not have sufficient knowledge about GMO. On a scale of 0-10, I am completely being supportive of GMO mass production. Scientifically, GMO are supposed to make it more efficient for the agriculture to cultivate and raise the crops and animals. In the process eventually, GMO might become the light to the food hunger problems that we have right now and in the future due to the rising population. In addition, one has to admit and understand that GMO played a key role in US market and …show more content…
It is true that the GMO label might change the attitude of the consumers since most people think any food processed using chemicals in laboratory are bad, and the food might cause short or long term health effect even though they do not really know what exactly the food is or how the food is processed. They are not to blame for their ignorance, but it is the industry responsibilities to create the awareness among the publics and erase the stigma of GMO products. Eventually, the supports of GMO will grow as the awareness increase just as in European
James J. Braddock was a hero of the U.S during the great depression. Braddock was a boxer which happened to brake his hand during his fight against Abe Feldman. Due to this event he got his license revoked and he had no income of money. This caused his family big problems like them could not pay their bill and lost electric. This eventually lead to his wife taking their kids away to her sister's house. That is what determined him to get a job at the docks and get back in boxing. His rise back to stardom was big as he beat every fighter he fought and eventually became the next world champion. This is why Braddock was such a hero to the world because they thought they were fighting for them he gave them hope. The reason he gave the people hope
The main proponent to use gmos was to increase food production to feed the world's impoverished and to use less pesticides in farming. Gmos have not achieved any of its goals as world hungry still exist and pesticide use continues to be used at the same rate. The heavy use of pesticides is not good for the earth people or other life forms that come into contact with them. They are polluting our water and land and if we continue to use them heavily we will make our land infertile. Just off of these facts I believe the use of gmos should be reduced as we are fighting fire with fire. You can't help feed people of today by poisoning the land and water for the people of tomorrow it is an inefficient and illogical
In this study, we used one adult male Sprague-Dawley rat weighing 283 g. The subject was on a 6 am turn on, 6 pm turn off light cycle and was fed and given water regularly. The subject had also already gone through a rotometer test to find the subject’s preferred rotational direction.
Many food companies frown upon the idea of having to put labels on their foods because consumers will not want their product if their are too many GMOs in the product. If food companies were forced to put GMO labels on their products they may feel inclined to put less GMO in their products to cause consumer happiness. With labels on the food products consumers will feel more confident with their purchase to consume that food. Which would cause sales to fly through the roof for many food companies, especially organic food companies. GMO labeling influences consumer behavior, “...the majority of supermarket employees believed that the presence of non-GMO labeling influenced consumer behavior in some way, with 52.9% reporting that it impacted all consumers, 17.6% asserting that it mattered to those who were knowledgeable and interested in food without genetic modification, and only 5.9% feeling that their clientele would not be interested because of its demographics.” (Wunderlich). According to a survey done by Wunderlich, Gatto and Mangano where they investigate the current Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) and organic labeling policies and to determine the impact on consumer choice. They found: “There is a need for clearer labeling policies regarding GMO foods. If GMO foods were labeled more clearly, consumers would be able to make more educated purchasing decisions and
Gmos, genetically modified foods, are some of the most common science experiments we’ve done. We use them to alter our food either for better or for worse. I don’t believe we should use GMOs unless we truly have to because of the costs, health issues, and all of the unknown factors with the usage. We, today, depend on them more than we have to or should. I think there could be and are better things to put in place of GMOs that have better benefits. We just have to let them go and search for the right answer.
One of the greatest accomplishments since 1982 is the invention of GMOs. They were first approved by the FDA in 1982 for Humulin, insulin that has genetically engineered E. coli bacteria. The thinking behind GMOs was to develop crops that were resistant to pests and diseases in addition to improve nutritional content. GMOs have helped numerous people around the world. They have made farmer’s crops have better yields and a more successful growing season. GMOs are beneficial and should be promoted because they are more economical and they increase productivity in agriculture; however, the opposition believes GMOs potentially cause health issues.
An investigation was conducted to determine an unknown concentration of ethanoic acid in various types of vinegar. Vinegar is a liquid that consists of around 4-8% ethanoic acid (CH3OOH), water and other trace chemicals (Wikipedia, 2018). The vinegars used in this experiment were wine, white wine and apple cider and they have 6%, 5% and 4% ethanoic acid concentrations respectively (University of Sydney, n.d). Vinegar is produced by the fermentation of ethanol by acetic acid bacteria. An acid is considered strong if they completely ionise in water to produce hydrogen ions and have a low pH, an example of a strong acid is hydrochloric acid (HCl). Weak acids, however, do not fully ionise and instead form an equilibrium mixture. Ethanoic acid
We have been participating in a mass scale biotech agricultural experiment for over twenty years. Since the mid-1990s the U.S population has been consuming Genetically Engineered (GE) foods or foods that contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) without having done enough research to assess its long time effects on humans. According to the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA), agency responsible for protecting the public’s health and safety, “genetic engineering is the name given to certain methods that scientists use to introduce new traits or characteristics to organisms.” In other words, scientists modify the structure of plants or animals by removing some of their DNA material; or by inserting that
GMOs, (genetically modified organisms) have been a topic of interest in the social eyes for years. Since they’ve been created, many people have voiced and written about their opinions on GMOs, and whether they are dangerous or not. Created to expand the genetic diversity of crops and animals, many don’t know whether GMOs are good or bad, and neither do researchers. Though there hasn’t been any evidence claiming whether GMOs are good or bad, it has certainly not stopped the public from creating their own opinions. Since no one knows the truth behind GMO, it has opened a window of opportunities for companies including Monsanto to voice their support of GMO, while other companies like the Non-GMO Project voice their
The aim of my writing assignment is to show my agreement with the consumption of organic food instead of genetically modified food (GMO). I have written it as a post on my blog, establishing the advantages and disadvantages of consuming one type of food or the other. I have used an informal style because I am writing for a blog, which only my colleagues can read.
In many parts of the world, millions of children and adults die every year from not being able to find food. Some argue that the use of genetically modified crops is the ultimate solution to this problem. They believe in the power of genetically engineered crops to stop the hunger, allow crops to be grown on previously unfarmable land, and solve all of the malnutrition-related problems in both developed and developing countries.
Gmo Fear! Advertisers are misleading the public. Sometimes this is intentional and sometimes it is out of ignorance or because data has not been collected yet. Either way, the public has been pulled and tugged in opposite directions on the GMO issues. People are against GMO foods for health safety, farming practices, technological reasons, fear, and some for religious reasons. A. S. Bawa states, “There are controversies around GM food on several levels, including whether food produced with it is safe, whether it should be labelled and if so how, whether agricultural biotechnology and it is needed to address world hunger now or in the future, and more specifically with respect to intellectual property and market dynamics, environmental effects of GM crops and GM crops’ role in industrial agricultural more generally”. This statement puts the GMO issue in a nutshell that marketers and advertisers must contend with. Advertisers for and against GMO foods are appealing to both sides of the debate, but as Bawa indicates, “If we want to put this technology on a proper scientific foundation and allay the fears of the general public considerable effort needs to be directed towards understanding people’s
Over 70 percent of the foods we eat today are genetically modified (GMO: genetically modified organisms)! This means that it contains genes that had been revised from the original. Although GMO foods are used commonly, are people really aware of its effects? According to research by many scientists and engineers, genetically modified food cause failure ,in the long run, to the body. GMO foods are classified to the illness side of the health continuum. The second reason as to why GMO foods are not safe is that they are ignored by the government. Lastly, not only do genetically modified food injure consumers, but they also leave negative impacts on the environment and the food chain.
Throughout the 20th century, our view of genetically modified has been changing, a lot of evidence has been reported on how consumers could potentially react to GM food, what can lead the public attitudes to accept GM food, and willing to pay and accept the fact of GM food and consume it more in their food. people knowledge of GM food can be low or high and that what can affect their attitudes toward GM food. Consumers opinions Whether was negative or positive they has been changed in different ways, different countries. According to studies based on direct survey consumer react to genetic modification food have been reported to be negative. On the other hand, direct survey studies show a positive react to genetic modification food(Consumer response to genetically modified foods,2004,p3). Every time we think about GMO foods, the first things that come to mind are how people can consume it. Are they well known about GM foods, have enough information about the effect, benefit. Or they just have to follow government order, mass media influence them or, new studies from a group of scientist. Some
However, it is understandable that manufacturers use alternative labeling methods to maintain customers. No consumer is going to want to want to purchase a food product that has the words “contains GMOs” slapped across the front. A poll done by ABC News found that “fifty-seven percent [of consumers] say they'd be less likely to buy foods labeled as genetically modified” (Langer). Manufacturers take advantage of the QR codes and 1-800 numbers to deter consumers from finding out the truth behind their genetically altered ingredients. GMOs are a smart business decision for large companies because they allow yields to be much larger compared to conventional foods. Above all, it is important to recognize that manufacturers are fully aware of how they are manipulating customers into purchasing their products.
