Each colony was settled for different reasons such as religious freedom, riches or glory. Massachutes and South Carolina were both settled for very different reasons as well. Though they were very different there was also some similarities.

The northern colonies consisted of Massachusetts, Rhode Island. Connecticut, and New Hampshire. They had many natural resources such as fish, lumber, and fur.  These helped the colonist trade. This region’s economy was primarily based off of fishing and shipbuilding due to the act they were near water and did not have arable soil. Most of the settlers who ran from religious persecution and settled here were puritans.

This allowed for the people to have a say in the making of laws. The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut (Doc. 3) was another example of a representative democracy in colonial America. Under the Fundamental Orders, there were two

Although both the New England Colonies (Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire), and the Chesapeake Colonies (Virginia and Maryland) were both settled by people of English origin, by 1700 they were both very distinct for a multitude of reasons; Three of which being, their economics, African Slave population, and their life expectancies.

The regions of the Thirteen Colonies has major differences and their were major differences in the lifestyle between the regions. The differences between Connecticut (New England region), Delaware (Middle region), and Virginia (Southern region) will help me decide which of the three colonies I would live in.

The colonies of New England, the Mid –Atlantic and the Upper and Lower South developed their own forms of culture, conduct and commerce. Given the choice, where would you have preferred to live?

Although The Northern Colonies had a huge expansion of trade, parks, paved streets, diverse crops and many more, The Middle Colonies are considered the best to live in because it had major ports/trade, had religious diversity by 1775 and fertile land.

Thomas Hooker was the founder of Connecticut colony and a prominent puritan minister. His most famous sermon was on May 31, 1638 on Principles of Government. This influenced the fundamentals of government in 1639. Roger Ludlow wrote most of the fundamentals of government,

During the colonial era, England founded the Thirteen colonies. The New england colonial region was established for religious freedom. The Southern colonial region settled to find gold and earn profits. There were many differences and similarities in New England and the Southern geography, economy, and culture.

Representative government was used in the form of Town Hall meetings, where officials would be elected once a year. In Limitations of Government, John Cotton wrote that “It is therefore most wholesome for magistrates and officers in church and commonwealth never to affect more liberty and authority then will do them good; and the people good.”(Doc H). Cotton’s purpose in writing this was to show that in is beneficial to limit the power of the government in order to allow for the good of the people. Puritans believed that no one should become too powerful, otherwise they might try to undermine the power of god. While this system of government promoted the liberty of the commonwealth, certain Puritan ideas withheld these liberties from a majority of the people. Since religion was a focal point in New England, only churchgoers could participate in these elections. Yet due to the belief that women should be subservient to their husbands, those churchgoers had to be men. These restrictions, followed by the requirement that these men be free and white, left a tiny fraction of the population able to exercise the right to vote. This system of government was, however, revolutionary for it’s time, and made great strides from England's own Parliamentary system.

The colonial region of New England was made up of Plymouth, Massachusetts-Bay, New Haven, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. This region was made up of a primarily puritan population, which affected every aspect of life in the region including how towns in this area were set up, social interactions in the area, and the level of education. Towns in the New England region were all set up around a centralized town square, in which people had to live a mile away from. People also lived in relatively close together in the region because they believed that the sins of one counted as sins of them all causing them to all watch each other closely. Much of the population in this area were not new immigrants once established, rather families who settled there permanently in the region so that they can have their religious freedom. The colonial region of New England was also one of the most educated areas of the world at the time. Do you want to live in a new colony? The middle colonies are the best colony of them all. The middle colonies were made up of four states Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Delaware. The middle colonies presented a good amount of religion unlike the new england colonies and the southern colonies.

Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maryland were the thirteen colonies all had a different reason to be a colony.

Virginia is the best place around, we weren’t so good before but now we are back on the top. Virginia has the largest population and we guarantee you that you will earn money thanks to our self-government. Also, the King of England signed a Magna Carta or “The Great Charter”, so they can not raise taxes without asking the nobles. We have The House of Burgesses so our people vote for representatives. Settlers have the opportunity to control their own government so your everyday life is the best it can be.
