Contrary to popular belief, Friar Lawrence in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet should be considered responsible and accountable for the deaths of the main protagonists. Friar Lawrence first emerges as a wise, influential character of significance who plays a pivotal role in helping Romeo and Juliet navigate their forbidden love. However, through closer examination, it is apparent that his misguided involvement and schemes initiated a chain of tragic events. Despite his position as a trusted advisor to the young lovers, Friar Lawrence’s selfish, scheming, and irresponsible nature ultimately leads to their demise. Friar Lawrence seemingly shifts his outlook when he discovers that it is Juliet who is responsible for Romeo’s newfound affection. Despite his earlier reservations, he agrees to marry Romeo and Juliet. However, it is clear that his offer to help is unquestionably driven by his own selfish and underhanded motive to end the feud between the Montagues and Capulets. This is expressed in his statement, “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be, / For this alliance may so happy prove / To turn your households’ rancor to pure love” (Shakespeare 3.2. 97-99). Friar Lawrence seems willing to overlook any suspicions over Romeo’s change of heart from Rosaline to Juliet. It appears that Juliet is a price he is willing to pay in order to put an end to the feud residing in Verona once and for all. Moreover, Friar Lawrence continues to act selfishly when discovering Romeo and Paris dead. He tells Juliet, “Come, I’ll dispose of thee / Among a sisterhood of holy nuns. Stay not to question, for the watch is coming. Come, go good Juliet. I dare no longer stay.” Shakespeare
good Juliet, I don’t dare to stay any longer” (V.III.21-22). In the last act, when Juliet awakens from her comatose state, she finds her true love killed before her. Friar knows how strongly their lives are intertwined, and that Juliet has suicidal tendencies. Yet, when Juliet refuses to flee the tomb, he leaves her there because of his fear of the watch appearing. He left her there in the knowledge that the sight of Romeo’s dead body would kill her, literally.
Friar did this when “But come young waverer, come, go with me. In one respect I’ll thy assistant be, For this alliance may so happily prove turn your household rancor into pure love (2.3.95-99)”. This shows that Friar Lawrence was irresponsible and was supposed to give Romeo positive advice and to not marry Juliet, who’s family is the rival of Montague. Despite Friar Lawrence’s good intentions of bringing both families together after Romeo and Juliet's marriage, he was wrong and his bad decision contributed to Romeo and Juliet's death. To add on, Juliet was in a crisis because she did not want to be married to Paris and would do anything to be with Romeo.

Friar Lawrence should have taken a long period of time to think through his decisions. However, he didn't because he was convinced by Romeo's words and thought their marriage could bring their family together. Also how it would bring peace to the society if the Montagues and Capulets reunite.
Friar Lawrence does not fully agree that Romeo is in love with Juliet, but because he believes this could end the feud he agrees to marry them, this is shown from this quote. Even though he thought he was doing the right thing, his decision ignored what could go wrong.
Friar Lawrence listens and then contemplates helping Romeo and Juliet wed, but in his final decision the only outcome he sees is the one where the two families come together and stop feuding. Friar Lawrence was not in love, his judgment was not clouded unlike Romeo and Juliet because, “love can look for all the world like mental illness.(it) prompts out-of-character behavior”(Dupler 1). With that in mind, he was also the only adult involved in the issue. Friar Lawrence has no excuse for his poor decision-making. He needed to consider what bad outcomes could occur from the whole situation as well as the good, but he failed to do so.
In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Friar Lawrence was mostly the cause for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Despite his intentions were good, a string of illogical and stupid decisions from Friar Lawrence led to the downfall of the two lovers. Throughout the play, he further shows his lack of care by constantly attempting to flee situations that seem threatening to him. Although Friar Lawrence did not physically kill Romeo and Juliet, he unwittingly contributed to their demise by marrying them without parental consent, concocting an escape plan for them, providing the means to carry out this plan, and then abandoning Juliet, while she was distraught.

Friar Lawrence Takes Responsibility: People have the need to feel respected. In every life or story, even if you don’t see it, there’s always someone who wants the credit to feel validated and proud. This need for pride is typically the downfall of the tragic hero. In the melodrama Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, the deaths of the protagonists Romeo and Juliet are most dependent on the selfish Friar Lawrence. Along with being impulsive, Friar Lawrence’s irresponsibility leads to convincing young adults into abrupt and daring decisions. Friar Lawrence takes his opinion into consideration, and tries to help him out, at the best of his abilities. Some critics argue whether or not it it was his fault for their death. It was truly his fault.
