One person who is to be blamed for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet is Friar Laurence. Although Friar Laurence is portrayed as a ‘good’ man – and seems to have/do no harm to the people of Verona – he is not completely blameless. In fact, Friar Laurence undoubtedly has the most blame for their death. In Act Two, Scene Three, Lines 90-95, Friar Laurence agrees to the marriage of Romeo and Juliet because Friar Laurence truly believes that if they were lucky enough, the two feuding households, the Capulets and the Montagues, would have their hatred between one another be turned into pure love. “O, she knew well/Thy love did read by rote, that could not spell./But come, young waverer, come go with me./In one respect I’ll thy assistant be,/For this alliance may be so happy prove/To turn your household’ rancour to pure love.” All Friar

Most people that have read the book , Romeo and Juliet, usually ask the question; “Which one of the characters is it to blame for the death of the two star crossed lovers?” Unfortunately, the answer to this question is extremely difficult to be found. This is because in this story, “Romeo and Juliet”, there are more than one person to blame. For example, some characters that has contributed to Romeo and Juliet’s death was the Capulets and The Nurse. This is because they didn’t support their precious Juliet all the way. They forced an arranged marriage on her without her consent because they believed that someone who is royal and noble is perfect for anybody. On the other hand, the person that is the most responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s death is Friar Laurence, since he is a person who needs to plan stuff out more carefully, and who mostly cares for himself.

After reading this play, I believe Friar Laurence is at fault for Romeo and Juliet's death. Firstly, he sent only 1 messenger to Romeo, due to how important the plan was, he should have at least sent 2 or 3. Second, he made a plan that was super important and almost impossible. For example, trying to sneak into Juliet's tomb and break her out without getting caught. Something was bound to go wrong.

As said by Friar Laurence,”Hath washed thy shallow.. cheeks for Rosaline” (2.3.70). This again demonstrates how even though Friar Laurence is well aware of Romeo’s tendency to say things and make decisions rashly, he still decides to assist Romeo and Juliet in getting married. Both of these quotes show exactly how Friar Laurence negligently decided to help Romeo and Juliet get married, without their parents permission, and without a fair assessment of the mindset of Romeo. Once Romeo is banished, Friar Laurence, in hopes of maintaining his reputation, decides to make an elaborate plan once Juliet and Romeo both threaten suicide if they can no longer see each other. As said by Juliet,”Be not so long to speak; I long to die” (4.1.66).

Friar Laurence set up the marriage in a fast matter by essentially setting up the marriage of two teens in a span of a few days just because he wanted the satisfaction of both families feud concluded. In Act 2, scene 3, line 92-93, Friar Laurence states “For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households’ rancor to pure love”. Friar Laurence in this sentence was handling the marriage in a fast manner only thinking the positive outcome of the marriage. If he waited a little bit longer, he would’ve found out that Romeo just came out of a relationship with Rosaline. If he knew the about the relationship, he would not assemble the marriage because Romeo is not mature yet in which would not result in the death of the star-crossed lovers. Another quote from Friar Laurence in which he wants both Romeo and Juliet to get married is in Act 4, Scene 1 , line 73-78 , Friar Laurence states “If, rather than to marry County Paris, Thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself, Then is it likely thou wilt undertake A thing like death to chide away this shame, That copest with death himself to ’scape from it. And if thou darest, I’ll give thee remedy.” This quote essentially states Friar Laurence telling the plan to Juliet in which will include a phase in which she will be in a state of death which will later be unsuccessful. Did you know that the main person to blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet is Friar Laurence? It’s a real thing! Multiple things lead to Friar Laurence as the culprit for Romeo and Juliet’s death. Such as them being wedded by him in the first place because he wanted the Montague and Capulet feud to end. He also shows himself as a petty tyrant by forcing Juliet to go along with his plans, and she of course goes along with him because she sees the Friar as her only escape to be with Romeo.

Whenever a problem occurs, there is always someone to take the blame, whether it be a war between two countries or an argument between siblings. However, there is much controversy surrounding who is to blame for the tragedies that took place. Some say that their families caused the deaths, while others say their counselor and mentor, Friar lawrence, is to blame since he married the two despite the potential consequences. Based on the facts, Romeo is to blame for all the tragedies that took place. He thought it might have ended the feud between the two families the Montagues and the Capulets. In act 2 scenes 6 its says that “and in their triumph, die like fire and powder which they kiss”. Romeo has completely forgotten about Rosaline, and now has focused his love onto Juliet. The Friar agrees with Romeo.
