What were the Major Causes of the French Revolution?

Throughout history, there have been many monarchs. There have also been people that agreed and disagreed with the monarchs. This has led to many conflicts and battles. The monarchs had a lot of power and could do whatever they wanted. This has caused monarchs to do things that had negative effects on the people. The French revolution was the people of France going against the monarchy. The French Revolution was caused by economics, government, and social issues.

One big cause of the revolution was the economy. In France leading up to the revolution, there was a lot of poverty as well as national debt. The poverty was so bad in the late 1780s that the people said, "The lack of bread is terrible (Document 7)." They also said, "The price of Bread has risen above people's ability to pay (Document 7)." This shows that the people were too poor to afford bread. Also, people had to pay "very heavy tallies and other taxes (Document 4)," along with rent. The government also …show more content…

The government was a problem because the king held too much power. "He made and enforced the laws. He could declare war and make peace. He levied taxes and spent the people's money as he saw fit (Document 1)." He also controlled expression using censorship. This lead to kings being unfair or making poor decisions that negatively influence everyone. Examples of this include king starting wars or people being killed or imprisoned without committing crimes. The Estates-General was also unfair because the groups were not representative of the populations each group represented. Also, when they said "In order to assure the third estate the influence it deserves because of its numbers…its votes in the assembly should be taken by head… (Document 8)," the king rejected it.
