“Freedom is a means to an end, not an end in and of itself. When you have no end and make freedom an ultimate goal, anything goes.” The term freedom is a word that is loaded with passionate emotions made up of the values people view as important. It is also considered to be a vague term; an abstract noun that will always be controversial. Dashner brings readers to question their thoughts on freedom through his characters in The Maze Runner. To most of the Gladers, freedom is the ultimate goal. Their minds are stuck on the physical aspects of being in confinement. From the moment he walks into the Glade, Thomas feels as if he had to escape from the “prison” the Creators put him in. “For some reason the clothing here surprised Thomas; it seemed like everyone should be wearing something more menacing—like prison garb.”. The boys feel trapped; like they have been deprived of their freedom. Their freedom is limited, but they are …show more content…
Minho and the runners are fueled by their desire for freedom to keep running. That desire fuels all of the Gladers to not give up. Each of them know that if they let go of the miniscule amount of hope for freedom, their resolve would crumble. “You get lazy, you get sad. Start givin' up. Plain and simple.” Minho says this to Thomas on his first day as a Runner. Giving up is not an option for most of them. The Gladers have been fighting way too hard to reach freedom to give up. Freedom is their motivation. The Gladers know that the only way they will be free is to work hard and earn it. If there was not that tantalizing idea over their heads, none of the Gladers would have made it out alive. The boys grow closer because they have a common endpoint. Freedom makes them more of a group because the boys have to overcome their differences and trust each other. The idea of freedom is a powerful entity. It controls thoughts, emotions, and pushes people to keeping going until they reach
The odds are stacked upon Luis Rodriguez, an upcoming sixteen year old that has found himself in the world of gangs. Luis is a human, and it is expected that he would make many mistakes in his life, however when given choices, he always seems to choose the wrong one and never learns from his mistakes. The theme of Luis Rodriguez’s autobiography, “Always Running,” is that many people feel like they are alone in the world, and that the world is always against them, but there will always be people that will stand in your corner and help them achieve what they were meant for. He proves this by including examples from his childhood and the mistakes he has made and the supports he has had.
In the novel The Perfect Mile, three men each set out on their own journey of breaking 4 minutes in the mile. A quote that captures the theme of the novel is “ Further, the four-minute mile had to be won alone. There could be no teammates to blame, no coach during halftime to inspire a comeback. One might hide behind the excuses of cold weather, an unkind wind, a slow track or jostling competition but ultimately these obstacles had to be defied. Winning a foot race, particularly one waged against the clock, was ultimately a battle with oneself, over oneself. The three men, John Landy,Roger Bannister and Wes Santee put it to the test and overcame mental and physical challenges, defeated criticism and were determined to break the barrier.
In Always Running by Luis J. Rodriguez, also known as Grillo in the novel, is a teen who goes through major changes as a result of the hardships he faced in his childhood, the obstacles he faces in his teenage life, and ultimately how he recovers from them in his adult life. “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” is a quote I believe Grillo goes by throughout his story
Thomas is held prisoner in WICKED headquarters, but is then eventually released by Janson, who tells the Gladers and Group B that there’s a cure for the Flare. The Gladers were forced to retrieve their memories and remove the tracking devices from their heads. “I’m afraid we don’t have much of a choice, the time for lies are over. Nothing’s going to work with you three still in the dark. I’m sorry. We need to do this, [...]” (Dashner 46). Thomas, Minho, and Newt were the only ones who chose not to undergo the procedure because they didn’t trust WICKED. Without the devices, the WICKED headquarters wouldn’t be able to track where the Gladers are. All three of them escaped before having their tracking devices removed, with the help of the Right Arm.
This quote was said by Alby when him and Thomas were conversing. Thomas has a lot of questions and seems eager to explore. Alby then tells him to calm down and it's all right to be scared and that "If you ain't scared, you ain't human. " I chose to use this quote because it stuck out to me. Entering a whole new world with no known exit while experiencing amnesia, and being surrounded by strangers and deadly monster, certainly is frightening.
There are rules and normal things in the Glade that are not normal to Thomas and he feels out of place. The Glade is basically a big high school where people fight and hold grudges, but the Glades rules specifically say not to hurt other gladers. This confuses Thomas and sets him outside of everyone because he has an immediate enemy with Gally. Gally and Thomas are one of the only enemy pairs in the glade. “Griever got ya wettin’ yourself?” the boy said through a sneer. “A little scared now? Don't wanna get stung, do you?” (Dasher 18). Gally is very condescending and rude to Thomas, which makes Thomas want to fight back. The boys both have a very hard time following the rules of the Glade, which set them both outside if the
In the biography Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand, a troubled adolescent boy named Louis Zamperini revolves his life around his running career. Starting at such a young age, running had many impacts on Louie’s life. The high demand of training kept Louie distracted from making unintelligent choices he had previously been making. Running changed the young teenager he was and the man he was going to become.
One of the primary rules that the gladers rely on is The Gladers rely on order, to prolong their way of life. Order gives their lives in the Glade regularity, hope, and purpose. Without order, their situation would turn on each other and become aggressive to one another to who could be the leader. Order allows them to maintain a community instead of fighting against one another. The Maze is chaotic. It changes every night, making it nearly impossible to map and solve. In the Maze there is no mercy and normal rules do no apply. The Grievers have no set of ethics and extreme caution must be employed at all times. Unlike the Glade, it is not a safe place. The Glade is set in stark contrast to the Maze as a place where some form of civilization
The Box is the center of life for the gladers. Once a month a new glader would arrive and every week supplies would be delivered through The Box. This part of the setting affected the gladers feeling and thought throughout the story. In the Maze Runner when The Box did delivered a girl to the glade it caused a stir in with the Gladers. It said, “ The look that came over Alby’s face was indescribable—part confusion, part anger, part shock” ( Dashner, Ch 13). This example shows the
to the older members of the Glade, usually involving going into the maze or other
Although this leaves Thomas feeling oddly exhilarated, while he's lying in his sleeping bag in a meadow near the gardens, he returns to feeling sad and curious. Thomas tells Chuck that he wants to become one of the Runners, even though he still doesn't really know what they do. Chuck just laughs and says whatever because being a runner is one of the hardest jobs in the glade.
The first mile of a race does not take as much mental motivation as the rest, it is all in the legs. Once the gun goes off, there is no stopping the hundreds of runners as they quickley leave the starting line. Runners are fighting for placement and are working to set themselves up for the next two miles. This is generally the fastest mile of the race. I found that this could be used to describe the first draft of a paper. It sets the tone for the rest of
The power or right to act, speak or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. A word created by man to escape the bonds of tyranny to express the idea of what it means to persist one's own ambitions. Freedom. Freedom is not the absence of confinement but the will to achieve freedom when imprisoned. After carefully concluding the reading done over this semester one is able to clearly understand the confinement these early Americans felt and their decision to achieve a form of freedom. Freedom has always existed but it is the history of this nation that will define what actions freedom takes.
Their power struggle is shown through both low and high camera angles as well as through the colours of their costumes and Thomas’s curiosity and Gally’s need for security is portrayed through their many personality conflicts. After analysing the movie, I came to the realisation of being involved in a conflict much like the one between Thomas and Gally; the hope for something better versing the security of the norm. However, I had learnt from that conflict to always hope for and fight for something better as the norm can become as restricting as the maze
When Thomas was put into the glade all he wanted to know was what was going on. All the simple questions he had were not answered. The rules of the glade were pretty simple, follow the rules and your time at the glade will be easy. Thomas’s thirst for answers was unquenchable, so he had to take matters into his own hands and figure out everything on his own. Thomas started as a whining greeny and grows to help everyone find a way out. Thomas went against all odds and most people of the glade just because of his curiosity for where he was and the answers he wanted.
