Free Education: An American Gift To My Generation

Access to free public education was first addressed by President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1877. Hayes did not scrutinize based on a family’s economic standing. A child of a poor family benefitting from free stuff was not his concern, nor did he believe that the wealth of a the family should exclude a child from the program. Hayes simply believed, education was the basis for full political and economic participation, and full participation was the basis for a prosperous economy. Therefore, education should be free and available to everyone regardless of their background. Today, education is universal and free to all from kindergarten through twelfth grade. In the 1950’ and 1960’s, graduating high school students were able to earn a decent-paying job with benefits almost immediately. However, as time went on, the educational requirements to earn a stable job rose. Along with educational requirements rising, so did the cost of getting that education. Rising costs for education have made it almost impossible for many students to earn an education they want and need. The most promising solution to this problem seems to be making college free for everyone.

I am all for free Public Education. I believe that all children have the right to learn. I feel bad for all those unfortunate people who never were able to receive an education.

As shown, there are strong arguments for and against free college. Thompson, Golden and Katz provided strong evidence that free college would be beneficial. However, the case against free college is more convincing. As shown earlier, free college for all will not proportionally help poorer students. That is wealthy students who do not need assistance will gain the same advantage. Not all students want to go to college or would benefit from it. Yet, these same people will be required to pay for free college through their taxes. There is little evidence that free college will increase graduation rates as more unqualified students enter the college system. The cost of attending a four year college has increased by 1,122 percent since 1978. Many people cannot afford to pay large amounts of money for college, whether be for themselves or for their children. Some families cannot pay for their children to attend college although they may be able to succeed in their classes. College is a head turner, eye catcher, and attention grabber. From making the decision to even attend to selecting the perfect school, the whole experience turns out to be incredibly stressful and multiple aspects go into what seems simple at first glance. The cost of attending college is on the rise. Parents and students anxiously await scholarship letters to help with these rising costs of education. State schools usually offer a financial advantage, but a new “law” is being proposed - free in-state college tuition to those students with a 3.5 GPA or higher. Few benefits are available and numerous disadvantages are present when it comes to this recently produced regulation. A few negative factors in this situation will be covered and the explanations will go into depth to prove that this idea is too good to be true. Even though the conception of free college is enticing, the cons outweigh the pros.

What is a degree worth if you are jobless? Many politicians are pushing the idea of a free college education, which on paper sounds great because underprivileged families that cannot usually afford college can now get education for free! Don't be fooled, because a plan for free college education nationwide would be very detrimental and pointless for America .

We have made great bounds when it comes to free education in the U.S but we still have a long ways to go. Free education is a requirement for all of the U.S, but not all education is equal. I was very fortunate that I grew up surrounded by good schools but not everyone is as lucky as I am. There are many schools that don’t live up to the standards that schools should be held to. They offer the minimum requirements to get funding from the state. This is not how we should be treating the future of our country. A solution to this problem is School Vouchers. They allow parents to receive money specifically to afford a better school for their child. An easy way to think of it is like a coupon good for any school. This will allow parents a way to get their child a quality education. People might ask where the money will come from but the same questions were asked when free education was first established and it already costs money for students to go to public schools. School vouchers will help parents and children get the schooling that they deserve, can improve education standards for everyone, and can help lower crime rates.

Free tuition for colleges is a topic that has come up a lot lately in the United States. Especially in the beginning of this year, when the democratic race was in place, Bernie Sanders started making tuition-free colleges one of his campaign points. While there are some that seem to neglect the idea of free tuition, the majority will agree that if not free at least it should be affordable. This topic is a very interesting one because it provides fascinating facts on both sides of the spectrum. One thing people argue against free tuition is that the United States has around 300 million people in population and it could not possibly keep up with the increase in college attendance and cost. On the other hand free tuition in colleges is relative common in almost every first world country around the world and even second and third world countries. Which leaves us to determine that it is not only possible for government to be responsible for education but it seems to be the norm around the world except in the United States. I think that colleges should be tuition free. Community colleges should be funded by the government and the government should not only be responsible in providing free tuition to its citizens but take pride that its citizens have access to free education, making its society an educated one.

Kindergarten- 12th grade is free for public education, after high school you apply for scholarships, grants, and financial aid for college, where that’s free money either from the government or from private companies. Help like this is great, like I said before it feels great getting this type of help when you need it, sometimes you can’t always start great. I’m sure when Hoover was applying for college it was much cheaper. Most colleges or all colleges should have a health center where everything is free because you pay it in the tuition which is great help the government as well. I believe the impact of our nation is that half of us are very optimistic and the other half are lazy. I like to say optimistic because not all could be Hoover but we can all at least

`Education is the most crucial part of each and every person’s life. But the higher tuition fee is the serious problem seen in America. Student are not able to go to university after completing their high school due to the monetary problems. They are studying till the high school as the education is free up to that level and after that they are compelled to stop their further education. In the US we are offered education as a right, but with a cost to it. Countries like Norway, Finland, and Sweden cover the education of their citizens every step of the way. I am an enormous advocate of Equal Opportunity! In the United States, a college education should be free to all for these reasons: everyone can benefit, a workable policy has been proposed, and our country could benefit. Sen. Bernie Sanders pulled the attention of many young voters with their plans of getting rid of college tuition. The advantages of free third-level education are endless.

There are many debates on illegal immigration but one topic that was not touched upon was whether the children of illegal immigrants qualify for free public education. “In America about 4.5 million children born in the US lived with at least one illegal parent”(Washington Post). I personally think every one of those 4.5 million children deserve a free public education because they annually pay 12 billion dollars in taxes, the 14th amendment states that every child, regardless of their immigration status, qualifies for educations. Although anti-immigration activists would say illegal immigrants come to the US with intentions to commit crime, “figures from the Justice Department show that about 5 percent of inmates in state and federal prisons are noncitizens” (NY Times).

College Education should be free. Initially, my first reason will be about how it manages to help poor students get an education. Furthermore, my second reason will be about how more people would be able to venture onto college. To sum up, my last reason will be that students will have more freedom to choose a major they enjoy. Here is my information to prove this.

Is free college education actually free? While the idea of a free college education sounds enticing, can the model actually work in the United States? Though attending university or college can, in most cases, set a person up for a successful future, not everyone can afford to continue their education past high school. Students contemplate not attending university due to the stress of college debt or inability to pay. This, in turn, causes some politicians to introduce the controversial topic of free education. With free education, college students could come out of university with little to no debt, making their lives after college much less stressful. Higher education should not leave students tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. This means getting the Department of Education involved so more students can attend college and the Department can achieve its mission of educational excellence.
