Free Blacks In The North

In the North, free blacks had restricted political, economic, and social freedom. Free blacks in the North had limited political freedom-the right to vote or hold office.

The 1800s, was a time of prosperity, wealth, and slaves. New inventions were made which helped industrialize the country, and mass produce products. However, the African Americans were brought into slavery to help collect materials that made industrializing easier. Slaves were a key component to cotton picking in the South, though in the North, slaves were not a necessity, so one by one, states began emancipating their slaves. By the 1860s, there were 221,000 free blacks in the North, and the three regions are New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and the Midwest, which all became slave free states. Even though all states in the North became slave free states, other states, such as, Rhode Island took 58 years to officially outlaw slavery. Unfortunately, African Americans were looked down upon and discriminated against, since their skin color was different. Blacks couldn't do about anything in the north. So they weren't allowed to work at certain jobs, eat at places whites ate at or even use the same restroom. They may have been free but they still had to be careful on what they do, just because the north is free doesn't mean all whites still agree with it. Lots of time blacks were kicked out of areas because of the whites not liking them. Free blacks in the north had very limited freedoms.

On top of that, the population of whites vastly outnumbered the population of blacks, which would make it easier to oppress blacks. So the question remains, were African Americans in the North really and truly free? The answer: they weren’t.

In 1865, the United States government implemented what was known as Reconstruction. Its’ purpose was to remove slavery from the south, and give African-American’s the freedom in which they deserved. However, the freedom that they deserved was not the freedom that they received. With documents like The Black Codes restricting them from numerous privileges that white people had and the terroristic organization known as the Klu Klux Klan attacking and killing them, African-American’s were still being oppressed by their government as well as their fellow man. Slavery may have been abolished, but African-American’s were not yet given the freedom and rights that their white counterparts took for granted.

African Americans weren’t slaves in the North but were they really free? The free African Americans lived in New England, Mid-Atlantic states and the mid west. There were 31,000,000 people and 14% were African Americans. The question is did the free blacks in the North have political freedom, economic freedom, social freedom, and religious freedom? The free blacks in the North were not truly free.

In ways large and small, free blacks went through many challenges such as hostilities, resentment and a never-ending circle of restrictions. Free blacks paid a high and continuing price for their free status. They paid heavily as their groups’ numbers were kept low and their aspirations went unrealized. These restrictions are the keys to appreciating and understanding the challenge filled world of free blacks

The dichotomy of freedom and slavery in rhetoric and rise of the United States of America has long been an enigma, a source of endless debate for scholars and citizens alike who wonder how a nation steeped in the ideals of republicanism could so easily subjugate and enslave an entire group of people. The Chesapeake region was home to America’s great statesmen, men who espoused ideals of freedom and liberty from tyranny. Yet at the same time, these men held hundreds of men, women, and children in conditions of lifelong bondage. How then did this dichotomy arise? The dangers posed by indentured servants that became freemen resulted in the development of a system of African-descended chattel slavery in the Chesapeake, a system whose creation and continuance was aided by a continuum of racial thinking and racial prejudice aimed at Africans in Virginia.
