Taft was another president of the Progressive Era. However, he was very limited compared to Roosevelt. Taft busted the good trusts that Roosevelt wanted to keep around. Instead of busting the bad trusts, he busted all of the trusts. Taft also tried to reduce taxes with the Payne Aldrich Tariff, but it scarcely reduced the rates. Overall, Taft was the
Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt was the president of the United States during the time of 1901 to 1909. He was vice president during William McKinley’s term. When McKinley was assassinated in 1901 by Leon Czolgosz, Roosevelt had to step up. He was a Republican, but his foundations were more progressive. This plays a part in why he did not get the Republican nomination in the year 1912. He lost the nomination to his handpicked successor Taft, who had run as president in the previous term (1909-1913). When he did not get the nomination, Roosevelt decided to run as a third party which he called the bull moose party. By doing this, it splits the Republican vote between Taft and Roosevelt. This has a large effect on the election, causing the Democrat Woodrow Wilson to become president. Woodrow Wilson was president from 1913 to 1921 with World War I happening in 1914. Wilson declared neutrality. Because of this, some people ask, “What if Theodore Roosevelt has been president during World War I?” In the article, “The Election of Theodore Roosevelt, 1912” by John Lukacs, he writes about an alternate universe of sorts where Roosevelt wins the Republican nomination and the presidential election of 1912. In this report, the following questions will be answered: Was Roosevelt a productive president? How do Roosevelt and Taft compare and contrast, as well as Roosevelt and Wilson? Would Roosevelt be an efficient president if he won the 1912 election? My thoughts are weaved throughout the

He hated crowds and press conferences, and quickly showed himself unready to practice the political lessons his mentor had taught him.” The contrasting style between Teddy Roosevelt and William Taft “…made TR all the more popular, and the public sent buckets of fan mail to Sagamore Hill.” The Republican Party was splitting. Taft had his cabinet with corporation lawyers and ignored progressive Republicans who were led by Theodore Roosevelt. He signed The Payne-Aldrich tariff, raising the tariff on incoming goods after he promised a tariff reduction. “A Chicago Tribune poll showed that the Payne-Aldrich tariff was unpopular. Taft could keep neither the public nor the press with him. He was, in short, not good at politics” In addition, the Pinchot-Ballinger Controversy which was the doubt over whether Taft has betrayed the conservation policies by Roosevelt. Both of them fastened the split of Republican Party. The Democratic Party got the lead in the Congress and the mass public was dissatisfied by Taft’s performance. The bond that the two men shared was beyond political ties they were friends and admired each other. President Roosevelt felt that there was no better successor to the Presidency than his dear friend, “Smiling Taft” which is what he called William Howard Taft. During his second term as a senator he Woodrow Wilson named Roosevelt Assistant Secretary of the Navy, under Josephus Daniels. “Roosevelt worked to expand the Navy and founded the United States Navy Reserve.” (Roosevelt, Franklin Delano). He served in that position for seven years and it prepared him for what he would face in his later years. Contrary to his cousin, Roosevelt chose to be a Democrat. In this democratic position he was chosen to be the nominee for Vice President with James Cox in 1920 going against Harding. He was defeated by a long shot, but like other trials in his life he persevered. In 1928 Governor Alfred E. Smith arranged Roosevelt to get his governor position. Almost thirteen years later Franklin Roosevelt was named the 32nd president of the United States of America. After 63 years, on April 12, 1945 Franklin Delano Roosevelt left his full, content life.
