Franklin and Marshall College has a variety of ways to keep the campus and students environmentally friendly. However, there are various resources that can be utilized differently to make F&M an even more sustainable and green campus. Lighting fixtures; campus utility cars including: Pubic Safety, Facility Cars, Emergency Medical Service, nightly shuttle; minimal solar panels; heating water for uses like: showers, sinks, and the swimming pool; using disposable items; using excessive textbooks; heating and air conditioning are all ways in which Franklin and Marshall college can improve to make the college a more profound place for the environment. Franklin and Marshall College is situated dead center in the most nutritious soil in the United States making it a great place for naturally grown grass. Growing grass requires an excessive amount …show more content…
By replacing all incandescent bulbs at F&M and replacing those with fluorescent ones will be more expensive. However, in the long run not only is it more sustainable for the environment but it’s cheaper as well. An incandescent light bulb usually uses about 60 watts while the fluorescent bulbs use between 13 and 15 watts. Along with saving energy at Franklin and Marshall College, decreasing the elevator use in New College House will greatly reduce the energy output. The institution does a fabulous job on making sure they have recyclables in one area and garbage in another area. Franklin and Marshall College lacks on instructing students on what goes where in regards to recycling and composting. Making signs more visible on campus for students to easily read and instructing them to appropriate trash cans for certain items. Creating an information session during orientation for all 1st year students and transfer students on “How to make F&M Go Green” could benefit the college in educating students on being more aware of resources they
The first change, installing new, energy efficient fluorescent where there are not currently fluorescent bulbs. This would cost around $300,000 to change to energy efficient lighting, based on the fluorescent bulbs that are already in place; an increase of about 1% of the budget needs to be contributed to this project. This is a change that will inevitable save the company more money that initial cost because energy efficient bulbs use less energy and last longer than their inferior counterparts (Business Victoria, 2015).
The quizzes raised my overall awareness of my carbon footprint, and brought to my attention the fact that I have a larger negative impact than the average person. To reduce my ecological footprint this semester, there are a couple of things I can do. First, I can start to recycle paper, glass, and plastic. As a college student who spends a lot of time on campus, it is practical to recycle because of the recycling resources that Texas A&M offers. The recycling containers with three stream receptacles are color coordinated and located all over campus, making recycling an easier task. Secondly, I could cut down on the amount of meats that I consume. Cutting out some forms of meat from my diet, especially beef or pork, would help cut out greenhouse gas emissions that are produced from animal agriculture. I am not a huge meat fan, and so this would not pose a problem. Additionally, I have the funds to purchase protein-based vegetarian food items. Lastly, I could walk more or take the bus more frequently. A lot of places are only a 2 to 5 minute drive from my house, and so it would behoove me to walk more. As a college student in a small college town, a lot of buildings and locations are fairly close to each other, and so walking is a realistic
We have become so diverse due to our ability to adapt to our surrounding environment. Our physical characteristics have gone from a singular region with fewer variables, to regions across the world where we were forced to adapt in order to survive. When the tribes commenced dispersion to different parts of the world, our biology shifted to suit the varying degrees of need for absorption of sunlight. While this is not the only cause of diversity, it played a major role in how we gather and process food, the climate of the location, and how our bodies change from differing jobs and activities that must be accomplished. We eventually developed mutations that would allow us to thrive all over the world.
Becoming environmentally friendly or going green may seem like the latest fad, but this new fad does create a variety of benefits. Applying an electronic recycling program to Bellarmine University creates a healthier environment for students, faculty, staff, and even community members. It would suggest that Bellarmine University is a leader in social change, and a promoter of public and environmental health. This campaign is designed to promote an electronic recycling program at Bellarmine University, by using a theoretical framework of Social Identity Theory, creating incentives for participation and using digital components.
An experience that has greatly influenced my understanding of the world has been my participation in Florida Atlantic University’s Pine Jog Fellowship. The Pine Jog Fellowship is a three-semester program that focuses on environmental improvement and education. In the Pine Jog Fellowship I have had the opportunity to develop my own environmental service projects that would benefit my community. During one semester of my fellowship, I coordinated beach clean-ups for Lake Worth Beach. I recruited over sixty people and collectively, we recycled and threw away over one hundred pounds of trash off of Lake Worth Beach. I also spoke to local fishermen and educated them on the dangers of throwing monofilament fishing line into the ocean. During the
Although I have only been at Washington State University for a short time, I have come to see this place as home—a place that has warmly welcomed me in my academic journey and amplified my leadership role. While I began college as the first member in my family to attend college and with less than three years of English experience, my faculty advisor encouraged me to become involved in campus activities. These activities have led me from raising awareness of environmental concerns on campus as a member of the Environmental Science Club to representing the school of the environment to students through the College of Agriculture, Human, and Naturals Resources Sciences known as CAHNRS. Last fall semester, as a CAHNRS student ambassador, I have served as a liaison between the college and communities. Encouraging higher education and promoting WSU and CAHNRS to high school
Powering the campus and at the same time reducing reliance on traditional energy sources. Georgia Tech has many categories on their sustainable energy research. With advancing their alternative energy and storage technologies by having fuel cells, solar energy, batteries, super capacitors and biofuels. The development techniques for their work are, by having their technology to reduce the many impact of energy and water usages and also being able to remove waste off the environment all together. For which helps out the health in the environment by keeping the air clean that everyone inhale. Also it’s to prevent any emergency situations and keeping the institution safe from health
The drought in the western United States is a nationwide concern that directly affects every person in California. It is every person’s responsibility to use water sustainably and no college, including the University of Southern California, is an exception. Rather than lagging behind sustainable water usage, USC should be at the forefront of it. On the surface of USC’s environmental sustainability campaign, it seems as if they are making sweeping changes; however directly under the first layer of facts there are holes in their plan. If USC made small changes to both their resident hall and landscaping water use, they could not only save money but also better USC’s environmentally friendly status. Regardless of whether or not California is in a drought, USC should still strive to be a model for water sustainability because it would not only better the school’s reputation of being a green university, but it would also save money.
Goal 9 - Student Services: student life, student organizations, events Student Services involves the engagement of student life, student organizations, and events doing their part to contribute to a more sustainable campus since they all take place on campus. Student organizations and events should be required to host one green event a year that is completely zero waste, meaning it does not produce any waste. A zero waste event would mean having the minimum requirements of minimizing paper advertising by using social media to advertise an event, minimizing the use of single-use decorations such as balloons and streamers, offer local, sustainable, and/or fair food if the event even requires food, offer, promote, and utilize recycling and compost bins, providing reusable and compostable service ware such as forks and spoons, and no styrofoam, non-recyclables, or non-compostable products allowed. This would help show students and even the general public that being zero waste is easier than they may think and then apply it to their own personal life. Goal 10 - Purchasing
Dalton Public Schools is currently encouraging that all of its schools go paperless and begin to put all of its assignments and grades on a website called Canvas. This would be a remarkable idea to encourage its staff to be environmentally friendly. Normally, I would include students in my previous statement but while the laptops are a step in the good direction, they have their faults in terms of being environmentally friendly. These
One major change that could be made would be to replace paper towels in the bathroom with hand dryers. According to Restroom Direct, a hand dryer cost $159.00, so if the administration put hand dryers in eight of the Riverwood bathrooms, it would cost $1,272. On average, a hand dryer costs between .02 and .18 cents in electricity whereas a paper towel costs 1.00 cent on average per sheet, so using hand dryers would vastly reduce the amount of electricity used as well the amount of paper wasted. Another way the Riverwood administration could help the environment would be to start a composting program. This program could gain volunteers through a compost club and through partnerships with other clubs and societies like Beta Club and the National Honor Society so that students could receive service hours for helping with the compost program or donating needed materials. According to the Green Mountain Farm to School initiative, the necessary materials for starting a school compost program are at least five 5 gallon buckets, a scale, work gloves, 1 cart for housing buckets, a shovel, a supply of hay or manure, cloth rags, a compost thermometer, and sifting screen. The school could get many of these materials from donations but if they were to buy them, the price would be approximately $175.19. According to Amazon, five 5 gallon buckets would cost $52.35, a scale would be $15.95, a pair of work gloves would be $12.44, a cart would be $37.02, a shovel would be $14.94, a small bale of hay would be approximately $4.38 (according to the University of Wisconsin), a five pound bag of manure would cost $11.12, cloth rags could be donated by parents, a compost thermometer would cost $26.99, and a sifting screen would cost
During my first semester at Georgia Southwestern State University, I realized that there are several positive and negative aspects to living on campus. As a student who lives on campus, I observe these every day. Some aspects are beneficial to students like the fitness center and student organizations because they help to enhance the health, intellect, and entertainment of life on campus. Some aspects are not beneficial to students like the lack of cleanliness in the dormitories and the food in the cafeteria because they prohibit students from enjoying life on campus. I would like to bring attention to a negative aspect of living on campus because I think that it needs to be improved to make life easier for students on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University. The washers and dryers that are available for the use of students have several issues. I know this because I have used the washers and dryers on campus, and I have talked to other students about them. They are outdated, irresponsibly taken care of, and too expensive to use.
Special thanks are due to Lecturer, [Prof. A Srikanth] the Mentor of the project for guiding and correcting various documents of ours with attention and care. He has taken pain to go through the project and make necessary correction as and when needed.
Becoming a responsible member of the City College environment should not be looked as a burden, but as a privilege as being an individual you is worthy enough to serve on such a capacity. A responsible member of the City College environment to me means that individual should be able to fulfill all of his or her duties. That individual should do what's best for the City College environment. I think that every student should be a responsible member of the City College environment. The City College environment can be viewed as a positively structured society that relies on its responsible members. In order for a society like this to function it needs its members to be responsible and work diligently together. If all students are able to do so
Social Factors - The California Pizza Kitchen sells pizzas, pastas, salads, etc. and the ambience of the restaurants is quite informal and homely. Its primary key to its success has been that they were the first pizza restaurant that offered fresh and non-traditional ingredients for its pizzas. On a whole, the American consumer base is traditionally not very nutritional conscience when it comes to dining out. Regionally, the consumer preferences are suiting the business model of the company in most areas; however changes in the consumer
