Fracking: Hydraulic Fracturing

Decent Essays

Did you know that at one point, the United States (U.S.) had a fear that they would run out of natural gas? Roughly a decade ago, government officials and industry analysts predicted that the U.S. would have a shortage in natural gas, the main source of energy in the states. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, would shortly be the answer to the problem. Hydraulic fracturing was developed sixty years ago by George P. Mitchell, who combined hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling as a process to extract natural gas from within the ground. Fracking is the process of pumping millions of gallons of chemically treated water, sand, and various chemicals into deep shale formations at pressures of nine thousand pounds per square inch or more. …show more content…

There have been several things that have contributed to the problem with fracking. One major contribution to the problems associated with fracking is the lack of regulation on restrictions and procedures that are to be taken when oil and gas extraction companies go to extract gas from the ground. Without regulations, there are no right, wrong, or safe way to perform the extraction process and the chances of causing harm and damage to the people and environment are almost guaranteed.Another contribution to the problem of hydraulic fracturing is endless amount of chemicals that are used at every single well site. There are several fracking sites in one area so the abundance of chemicals is extremely high and therefore the harm caused by the chemicals have greater effect on the people located around the fracking sites. The heavy vibration of the machines have been associated with the random earth tremors that have occurred in the United Kingdom. With these negative side effects of fracking, which affect the people and the environment in a terrible way, there are people who benefit from this. One set of people who benefit directly from the extraction process is the oil and gas industry workers. These industries perform the extraction of the gas; this provides them a source of income. Other than the industry workers, we the people, the consumers of energy, are also benefitting from the extraction of shale. We use the natural gas extracted to power our houses, heat our houses, and to power our stoves so our houses are heated. Fracking will continue
