The Battle of Fort Sumter marked the primary exchange of gun fire within the Civil War. when seven southern states proceeded with their declarations of secession, the state of South Carolina demanded that Federal (United States) troops stationed at Fort Moultrie (in Charleston Harbor) abandon the fort. On Dec twenty six, 1860, however, Union Major General Richard Anderson repositioned his troops from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter, he thought Fort Sumter was easier defended. South Carolina afterwards confiscated all the Federal forts in South Carolina but Fort Sumter. 2 weeks later, U.S. president at the time James Buchanan approved the delivery of reinforcements to Fort Sumter. The ship carrying the reinforcements was shot upon by batteries
Confederate General P.G.T Beauregard would fire the first shots on April 12th, 1861 at 4:30 am, in response of the Refusal to withdraw from the fort. Shortly after the Confederate’s19 batteries would lay siege for over 34 hours firing over 3,000 rounds. Fort Johnson fired the first shot from James Island into the dark night sky that exploded right over Fort Sumter. Union Captain Abmer, Doubleday’s ordered the Union soldiers to endure cannon fire for over two hours in an attempt to conserve powder cartridges for this reason before returning fire from an estimated 20 cannons. The Union army had half of the firing power of the Confederate army. Union ships would come during the height of the siege, but to the dismay of the fort they waited off the coast out of the range of enemy artillery. The captains of the ships found themselves in the midst of an artillery battle. The Union’s reinforcements were in sight but out of reach to those in Fort Sumter. “By Saturday, April 13, cannon fire had broken through the fortress’s five-foot-thick brick walls, causing fires inside the post. With his stores of ammunition depleted, Anderson was forced to surrender the fort shortly after 2 p.m. in the afternoon.” (History.com Staff, 2009). As a result of the bombardment of exploding shells, dense smoke and roaring flames made Fort Sumter very hectic within the

Throughout the Revolutionary War, there were many battles that occurred that are not remembered today. The reasons for this are plentiful, examples include minor battles, unimportant skirmishes, or travesties of war. However, some battles are forgotten intentionally, like times whenever something embarrassing happened to a soldier, or to an entire side. This case of embarrassing defeat is exactly what happened at Fort Galphin or, as the British called it, Fort Dreadnought, in Beech Island, SC on May 21st, 1781.

The day before the battle, General Beauregard demanded the evacuation of the Port, but Union ignored and bombardment started on next day. During the battle, Confederates had 500 troops, while Union had 80 troops. Confederate commander was P. G. T. Beauregard, who would lead to the victory on the First Battle of Bull Run 3 months later, and Union commander was Robert Anderson. The first bombardment of Fort Sumter began near Charleston, South Carolina. The Confederates bombarded Fort Sumter from all side, as shown in picture above. Also, the battle was fierce that “For thirty-three hours, the shore batteries lobbed 4,000 shells in the direction of the fort.” However, there were no casualties in the Battle of Fort Sumter. The major reason for that was because Major Anderson helped Union troops escape from Fort Sumter to keep troops out of any harms. Although there were no casualties, there were four Union troops who died and wounded by a gun salute shots by departing soldiers and the cannon exploded on April 14th. After 33 hours from the first shot from Confederates, Union surrendered to Southern forces. Confederate States of America considered themselves to be an independent nation no longer under the control of the United
Development of Fort Sumter was occurring when South Carolina withdrew from the Union on December 1860. At the time just two organizations of government troops watched the harbor.Robert Anderson instructed that these organizations were positioned at Fort Moultrie. Perceiving that Fort Moultrie was defenseless against an area attack, Anderson chose to surrender it for the all the more effectively faultless Fort Sumter on December 26, 1860. South Carolina volunteer army powers grabbed the city's different fortresses a short time later, leaving Fort Sumter as the solitary government station in Charleston. A standoff followed until January 9, 1861, when a boat called the Star of the West touched base in Charleston with more than 200 U.S. troops and supplies proposed
After Fort Sumter was fired on April 12, 1861, President Lincoln issued a call to arms.
It all began with the secession of South Carolina. After this an understanding was established between the authorities in Washington and the members of Congress from South Carolina. They both agreed that the forts, Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter, would not be attacked, or seized as an act of war, until proper negotiations for
On March 5, 1861 the day after President Lincoln inauguration of the United States, The president received a message (Beringer, Why the South lost the Civil War). In attempt by the confederate government to settle differences with the union were sponged by Lincoln and the confederate felt it could no longer tolerate a foreign force in its territory (Goldfield, 2002). Lincoln ingeniously devised a plan that would case the Confederates to fire the first shot and hoped to inspire the states that had not yet seceded to unite in effort to restore the union (Goldfield, 2002). Major Robert Anderson, who commanded the United States forces at Charleston, made the decision to withdraw from the land and forts surrounding Charleston to the harbor fortress of Fort Sumter because of the dangerous situations (Davis, 1958). He commanded almost 100 troops and desperately needed reinforcements with supplies of both food and ammunition (Schweikart, 2004).

The following day he composed to Floyd saying, I relinquished Fort Moultrie on the grounds that I was sure that if assaulted my men more likely than not been yielded, and the summon of the harbor lost… the army never would have surrendered without a battle." Despite Anderson 's longing to "keep the radiation of blood" and maintain a strategic distance from the penance of his charge, the chain of occasions that took after brought about the initiation of unmistakable threats four months after the factor. Anderson didn 't surrender and the firing started, Major Robert Anderson 's and a force of 85 Soldiers situated at Fort Moultrie close to the mouth of Charleston Harbor receiver artillery fire from the Confederate forces, fearing for the wellbeing of his men, Anderson moved his Soldiers to Fort Sumter, a forcing fortress amidst the harbor. Fortress Sumter was first implicit the wake of the War of 1812 which had highlighted the United States ' absence of solid waterfront guards.

On December 20th, 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union. During this time, 85 federal soldiers under the command of Major Robert Anderson were stationed at Fort Moultrie, which is also located near the Charleston Harbor. To protect the federal strong hold in the south, Major Anderson moved his troops to Fort Sumter in the dark of night on December 26th. When the people of Charleston heard the news of the invasion on the fort, it did not sit well with them and other Southern states. Fort Sumter was built to protect the harbor in Charleston, now it was a military threat.
Lincoln inaugural appealed the secessionists in the Southern. Lincoln made promises in defending the rights of the state and also protecting the slaves in states where slavery existed. He clearly put across that, he will defend the Union and the Constitution. In his speech, he pleaded in finding a common ground. His speech appeared conciliatory to the Northerners, however, to the southern people, the speech was reportedly, like the declaration of the start of a war. The next morning after his inauguration, the garrison at Fort Sumter was reported to be forced to surrender unless there was a resupply. The Government of Confederate claimed the fort, and looked for reinforcements as an action of war. Surrendering the fort would have only strengthened the cause of
