In the unit titled “The Journey of the Hero”, Odysseus was the heroic leader who went on an epic journey to find his home. In Forrest Gump, Forrest Gump is a disabled boy who grows up and finds himself in many different and sometimes difficult situations. As a child, he met a girl named Jenny Curran who was his only friend. As the two of them grew up, they grew apart, but Forrest still loved Jenny. The relationship between these two is similar to the relationship between Odysseus and his wife, Penelope. The heroes (Forrest and Odysseus) are both on a journey to get back home to their loved ones (Jenny and Penelope, respectively). In Forrest’s case, however, there are times when he gets to see Jenny; at the bar where she is singing and in Washington D.C. with Wesley. At these times, there are people trying to hurt her and Forrest fights them to protect Jenny. To Forrest, this is just a show of affection and he believes he is helping Jenny. Being raised by his mother, Forrest never really learned how to be mean. That one “stupid” man had a heart of gold, which is shown when he proposes to Jenny. Jenny tells Forrest that he would not want to marry her, to which Forrest replied “I’m not a smart man, but I know what love is.” This quality is shown throughout the movie with romantic love, friendship, and Forrest’s kindness to everyone in general. He always loved his mother for raising him and believing in him. Forrest also loved Jenny for being his only friend when they were kids, and Bubba was his best friend in the military. An example of Forrest;s general kindness was when Forrest was in the army and his squad was attacked; he kept running back to save as many people as he could. His goal was to find Bubba, but he could not let everyone else die. Even when Lieutenant Dan screamed at Forrest, telling him to leave him there to die, Forrest dragged Lt. Dan out of
