Flannery O’Connor’s short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” details a road trip gone terribly wrong. This family is going on a road trip to Florida, however the grandmother wanted to go to Tennessee. There was a newspaper article detailing the escape of a convict, The Misfit. Furthermore, this is foreshadowing his appearance later on in the story. After the family had been on the road for some time, the grandmother believes they were close to a house she visited when she was younger. The grandmother begged her son Bailey to go and lied about there being a silver panel in the house. These catastrophic events would not have happened if the grandmother was not being selfish in making Bailey turn around to go to the house and sneaking her cat in the car. As the story continues, the family comes in contact with the Misfit. They become very violent with the other members of the family. However, instead of trying to save the other family members, the grandmother is only worried about self-preservation. The grandmother from “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is undoubtedly responsible for the events that occurred on the trip because of her intentions, selfishness, and the spiraling of events caused by her. From the beginning of the story, the grandmother’s selfishness is evident. It is revealed that she brought her cat, Pitty Sing, with her on the road trip. The grandmother is hiding the cat in a basket from the other family members. Furthermore, the grandmother decided to bring the cat with her because she was afraid that “he would miss her too much and she was afraid he might brush against one of the gas burners and accidentally asphyxiate himself” (O’Connor).
