Quitters Inc by Stephen King is about Mr. Morrison, an addicted smoker who's friend gives him a business card and tells him to go to the place, he is told that if he goes there they will help him with his problems. He has an unpleasant experience with them but soon his life changes in a good way. in the end he meets with his friend just to find out that they had it worse. There are many uses of foreshadowing in the story but the most powerful one is when he meets Donatti, one of his statements lingers throughout the story. Cigarettes and smoking were not always viewed as something detrimental, in our era we now know that they can harm you. In the story they are viewed as a symbol for Death. 'But even the unregenerate two percent never smoke again we guarantee it'" According to King, by constantly smoking one can go too far and meet death itself. Furthermore , what Morrison got himself into means that they will always be watching him. So if he makes the incorrect decision his loved ones will get punished and he himself will shake hands with the grim reaper. Meeting Donatti really changed Morrison's life, after his first treatment he knew what was in it for him. In the story Donatti states, "We are Pragmatists." Being a pragmatist refers to someone who is practical and focused on reaching a goal, now there is no turning back for Morrison. Donatti will do everything at his disposal to help and make Morrison quit smoking, even if it means inflicting pain, not only directly but indirectly. We can now foreshadow what's going to happen in the future, the fact that he said that he is a pragmatist and how in the previous paragraph he pulled out a gun and emphasized that they guarantee they won't smoke again, we can start to think that maybe something terrible is going to happen to him or even a loved one.
