Football purists’ have argued against the NFL to not change the flow of the game, as they want football to be kept at its most original form. However, with the advancement of technology and a better understanding of post-football life for players, the league now realizes they must change aspects of the game to be safer and keep their players healthy for their careers and beyond. Player safety is a big concern for the league because the league wants to protect their players, their “employees”. For example, in 2010 the league proposed to hand out hefty fines and even suspension for illegal hits to the head. Only a few years earlier the term illegal hit to the head was unheard, today it is part of football vernacular. Long time football fans may
After the NFL commissioner came under scrutiny from Washington lawmakers on whether or not the injuries in his sport were the cause of traumatic brain disease. The commissioner enacted a policy that players had to pass a series of test by a neurologist prior to them being allowed to return to play( Grove, J) This policy change is similar to a normal employee passing a physical from their primary Doctor before they could return to work. The Commissioner enacted this policy to prevent players from returning to the game to soon. The current NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wasn’t the first recognize that his sport had a problem taking care of its players. In 1962 the rule of no “Face masking” was enacted. This rule prohibited a player from grabbing another player’s facemask (Grove, J 657). In the late 1970’s an additional rule was enacted. The NFL finally passed a rule prohibiting players from using their helmets to
Multiple deaths from a degenerative brain disease, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, is what the true culprit of the NFL is. This disease is caused from repetitive blunt force trauma to the head, leading those who are effected to struggle later in life and even turn to suicide. People are writing about these safety concerns in football nowadays because of the multitude of deaths related to this disease and the way the NFL choses to deal with it. The NFL disregarding its players is a subject at hand currently because people continue to suffer from CTE without even confirming they have it before they have already deteriorated. “Football Has Become Too Real to Watch” by television writer, Eric Buchman, describes these realities of the NFL and how it went from being a safe haven to a place where the NFL pretends to be oblivious to the realities of the game. Buchman’s argument is that the joy of football is gone due to the reality of current issues within the NFL. The NFL getting away with awful things is what Buchman wants the reader to take away from this article. His contribution to this debate is that he offers a perspective of the fans for why this issue is important without any biases towards the NFL.
The spectator of this sport has an obligation to the players of the sport, to make sure that the organization is protecting and looking out for them. Yet not only should the viewer be held accountable for the lack of communication in consequences between the player and the pro scene, but the organization of the NFL needs to make sure that their players have a full understanding of what is going on and how they need to protect the players. The current situation that is understood, contents contain implied knowledge that all parties of this table are in uniform knowledge and agreement to what comes of playing football. Finally, this should also happen at the youth level when kids are just getting into the sport, as it would better inform the parents and the kid if they understood the full
An increasingly popular topic in the realm of sports fans has begun to unravel. The National Football League recently has begun to introduce new rules and regulations for their athletes to start abiding by to ensure the continued safety of the player’s health. Although most find this change in the game of professional football as a positive step forward, others see this as a diminishment of the sanctity of NFL football. New rules and regulations that have been introduced into NFL are vital to athletes involved in the sport and help them to play with lowered risks of long term injuries that could possibly affect not only them but also the league in the future as well. The reasons for these
Many memories are made in football, but sadly some of the greatest players cannot recall them. The National Football League has been associated with concussions and brain traumas throughout the years, but lately it has been exposed by media and NFL veterans. The league recently “reached a $765 million preliminary settlement with thousands of former players who were suing the league over its treatment of concussions…” (Waldron). Many former players are experiencing the effects of taking hard hits over and over again; they were not properly treated, which makes the injury worse and long term. The concussion issue in the NFL is more prevalent today, because it affects not only the players, but the league as a whole.
Peter Park 2/6/2016 Language Arts 6-6 Football Argumentative Essay Final Draft Football and Concussions: the Crisis on Our Hands Football is America’s banner sport. Every year, millions of people watch the National Football League either genuinely on stadiums or live on televisions. The NFL is treated like a golden piggy: fragile, but all-powerful in money making. However, it seems that America’s front-runner sport is in a crisis. Concussions are having a seismic effect on youth football.
While the NFL is currently a very entertaining and popular American past time, there is one issue that threatens the future of the game-concussions. Concussions affect 1.6 to 3.8 million athletes and children annually in the United States. Among athletes, football is the most common sport involving risks of concussions for males, and soccer is the most common sports with concussion risks for females. The NFL has admitted that brain trauma effects a third of all NFL players (Knowles.) Concussions have been part of the game since the very beginning, but it 's only in the past 50 years or so that medical science and the public has become aware of the serious long term effects of concussions. The NFL is spending money on researching the problem, because they have been sued from hundreds of players that have suffered long-term damage from concussions. The NFL needs to dedicate more money and research into increasing helmet safety, implementing rules and policies to protect players, and utilizing the best response treatment to prevent and protect players from concussions.
Player safety has been an issue for the National Football League since the start of the league, but has taken on a greater importance in recent years. Now, when a player is injured after a play, he must sit out for at least one play to allow the team’s trainer to assess his injury and make sure he is fit to return to play. Many say the NFL is very invested in player safety, and the protocols recently introduced have drastically changed the way athletes are assessed and eventually released to return to the field. These changes were necessary in order to protect players from serious injury and long-term health issues. There are many possible reasons the NFL has increased its emphasis on player safety, including, many people are disturbed by the violence of the game, fewer kids are playing football at the youth and high school levels, league sponsors are worried about bad publicity, and there are lawsuits against the NFL dealing with the long-term effects of brain damage. These reasons make many ponder, “Does the NFL really care about player safety, or are they just saving themselves from bad public relations, and the detrimental economic effects that may result from them?”
One hard hit to a NFL player’s head can destroy their life. Concussions are a major problem that the NFL has been dealing with for a very long time. As a huge football fan, I have a special interest with this issue. When concussions were first identified as a problem, they were extremely down played. People thought that injuries to knees and backs were much worse than a concussion. What they did not know was that a concussion is lethal and can cause serious consequences. After this was discovered, the NFL started to take steps to improve the safety of players, but for some, it was far too late. Concussions that NFL players receive are negatively impacting their lives after their career, due to Chronic
Hawthorne, Author of The Scarlet Letter, criticizes that the style of punishment used by the Puritan Religion was radical, inhumane, and cold. He argues that the outcome of their punishments' was damaging to the characters and their personality. However, this accusation is false. The punishments although seemingly inhumane, caused positive outcomes for all three characters Hester Prynne, Pearl Prynne, and Arthur Dimmesdale.
The looming threats of concussions amongst athletes both amateur and professional have caused numerous rule changes in the world of sports. In football some of these changes can be seen and have almost completely changed the way the game is played. Coaches have began to teach their players to play in a safer way in order to try and prevent concussions. This has caused a lot of controversy mainly from older football players who argue that these new changes are making the sport soft and not what it used to be. A major change in the rules of football in recent years has been the introduction of the targeting penalty. A player can receive the targeting penalty for giving a very late hit, but is mainly used for intentional head to head contact. When a player is charged with the targeting penalty they are immediately ejected from the game and if they are professional they can be fined upwards to $48,620. (NFL.com) The fines; however, only affect professional athletes which leaves amatuer athletes to keep making the mistakes without too harsh of penalties. Organizations have seen this trend and have started to give harsher penalties to amatuer players in the form of suspensions rather than money. These new penalties have made the sport much safer but have caused much scrutiny amongst former players as well as current. Many say that these new rules and regulations have made the sport soft and lesser
Football is a rough sport. Many fans of the game watch it for the hard hits. These hard hits and the potential for injury is part of what makes the game so exciting. Some people say that football is too brutal and should be banned. Parents all over the United States don’t allow their children to play because of the risk of head injuries. Others allow their sons, and every now and then their daughters, to play and risk injury for a chance to earn a college scholarship and for a small percentage of players, the chance to play in the National Football League (NFL).
There are three words that are used for a tool for social control in The Giver. These three words are used in their community that promote or conceal the words we have that now in the community. Those three words are assignment, comfort object, and newchild. An assignment is given to you, and you can’t go without an assignment in Jonas’s community. A comfort object is given to all newchildren in their community, but taken away when they become older, and a newchild is what we call as a newborn. These three words are different than what we would call them, but their meanings are similar.
Is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is? That question is so mind-boggling that it would hurt people’s heads if they think about it too much. So much so that it may even feel like they have a concussion. That’s about how every NFL player feels when they have a concussion. Some are painless but could cause pain and permanent brain damage if left untreated. Concussions have become a major problem in the NFL. More and more concussions happen every year, and if things don’t drastically change, they will only increase. The NFL concussion protocol and injury rules are painfully ineffective and are in serious need of a change.
When looking at the safety of the game of football, it is imperative that the scope of observance is wider than just the professional level of play seen in the NFL, one must observe the high school and college levels of play where not only it is raw and less refined, but also a larger number of participants within the sport. On these levels it is most commonly seen that player domination doesn’t come from the massive amounts
