1. During my experiment, as my lab partner and I added more sodium hydroxide, the pH level began to rise. As the pH level climbed, the solution began to have more precipitate. In the stomach the pH level is 2. As the food continues through the digestive tract, the pH rises. The small intestines have a pH of 8. During my experiment, once the solutions had reached a pH of 8 was when there was the most precipitate present. After caffeine had reached a pH of 8, the solution had solidified to the point it was no longer a liquid.

2. We absorb less than 15% of iron in our daily diets. Adding iron filings to foods would add additional iron to our diets providing more opportunity for our body to dissolve the iron. This increases the bioavailability. Iron also dissolves well in fructose-something commonly found in cereals. This provides a good environment for the …show more content…

The added acid’s had many similar reactions to the original sample. After raising the pH of the iron solution from 2 to 8, a reaction began to occur. The color changed from a yellow to a dark red-orange color after the pH rose to 3. After the pH had reached 8 the color had turned to a green-blue. Color changes also happened after adding acid to the iron solution and then again adding sodium hydroxide. Precipitate also began to form in many of the substances. When the precipitate was formed, it means that a complex ion was not formed and the iron did not remain in the solution.
4. The substances that will have the greatest bioavailability will also have the least amount of precipitate. The more precipitate present, the smaller the chance the iron has to be absorbed. In this experiment the caffeine had the greatest amount of precipitate. This means that it has the smallest chance to be absorbed and the smallest bioavailability. However, many substances in this experiment such as Ascorbic Acid and Fructose had no precipitate form. This increases their chances for absorption, also increasing their
