Food stamps are a widely debated issue within the United States, and every year new proposed laws create arguments that can get bitter, personal, and ugly. Some see them as “free tickets” for the lazy and unemployed, while others believe they are the government’s way of providing the right to life that the country was founded on. As evidence shows, SNAP benefits are important to impoverished areas because they bring food to places were companies would normally not go to and give benefits to people who cannot help their situation.
The main reason why low-income areas are full of malnutrition and hungry people is because food companies have no reason to sell food there. As Erika Nicole Kendall, a former user of food stamps herself, states in her post on A Black Girl’s Guide to Weight Loss, “The reason that food deserts exist is because it is assumed that the people in those geographic locations cannot afford the products that a fresh food-selling store would provide”. However, food stamps and other programs can give companies incentives to sell food in these “food deserts” if the government subsidizes them. Through these programs, the government uses economic strategies to help the poor get the

In fact, the usual image of a lazy and unproductive food stamp recipient is not very accurate, since unemployed middle-aged people rarely get these benefits. As Nicholas Kristof states while writing for the New York Times, “nearly two-thirds of the recipients are children, elderly or disabled.” These benefits go to the people who truly cannot help their own situation, cannot hold a job for legal or physical reasons, and who should not be worried about when they could run out of food. The help these kids get translates to a brighter future, more reasons to work harder and be independent, and a belief that our government can help all of its
SNAP is the foundation of nutrition assistance programs. This program provides over 47 million individuals in nearly 23 million low-income households. The eligibility is not restricted to certain groups of individuals, and because of this, SNAP serves a vast amount of families with children, elderly people, and individuals with disabilities. Others eligible for SNAP include families with adults who work in low-wage jobs, unemployed workers, and those with a fixed income. The SNAP Program assists about 72 percent of people who live in households with children. Nearly 25 percent of households with seniors and individuals with disabilities, are also assisted (Rosenbaum, 2013).
All I knew was that it meant grocery shopping and a full refrigerator. When it ran out, I knew that meant an empty refrigerator and a stressed mom. As I grew older and more aware of its connotations, Food Stamps began to symbolize shame. I imagined all that people were thinking as I bought groceries for my family, and I felt shame. The shame that my mother couldn’t provide for us became a dark secret that I abhorred. Nevertheless, I began to accept it as a part of my life after coming to understand that having help didn’t negate my own mother’s hard work. It made me proud and loyal to the country that helped take care of me. Most importantly, I began to understand why economic inequality is often misunderstood by much of
How much of people’s paycheck should pay for other people’s food? Well let’s all face it, everyday working people aren’t only working to support themselves they are also supporting those on government support as well. Over nineteen percent of Americans are on what the government calls food stamps also known as EBT. Of these people a large amount of them lie on their application and don’t actually need this government support(J.B. Wogan). The people are able to do this because the government doesn't regulate what people do with their food stamps enough, nor do they do enough background research before allowing people to receive food stamps. In order to be sure that these people aren’t lying and cheating the system the government should implement
The SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC (Women, Infants, Children) programs both have similar jobs. Both programs attempt to help feed struggling families. In the past SNAP allowed members to purchase food staples and prepackaged food, but a recent bill is being made in order to address these rules. These changes will deactivate members’ abilities to purchase prepackaged food, and has limited them to purchase only food staples. These food staples included foods such as rice, bread, fruits, etc. While the desired new rules for SNAP are similar to the current rules of WIC, the bill will also attempt to allow members of WIC to purchase white potatoes in addition to their food staples. Multiple commodities’ economic standing will experience larger impacts on supply and demand from this proposed bill’s changes and implications.
Ohls and Beebout talk about the food stamp system and its inner workings in their book. Covering everything from how it works and how it was started to trade-offs of the program. I think the authors purpose for this book is to provide a more in-depth look at the food stamp system. Oh and Beebout intended audience for their book is people that have want to take a look at the food stamp system and want to try and understand more than they knew before. The authors assume that the audience has minimal to no knowledge about the food stamp system and want to further their knowledge about food stamps. They might even be a recipient of the program and want to figure out what is being provided to them. Ohls and Beebout take an emphasis on the whole
Also many of the impoverished people have SNAP benefits, but they do not have a grocery store near them to use these benefits at. The Social Work and Social Welfare textbook states that, “The average SNAP grant per household was $287, or $4.30 per person per day.” This means that most people really could not fully feed themselves while using SNAP. The researchers that conducted the study in this article interviewed and observed various different kinds of people in a rural county. The people they interviewed were of all different ages, had lived in the county for different amounts of time, and had different incomes. The researcher spent a long period of time volunteering at the rural food pantries to make relationships with the community members and to observe what challenges they are facing. After spending that time volunteering, they got volunteers to be interviewed using open-ended questions so that they could have a more complete understanding of the challenges of this food desert. A major finding in the study was that people with strong social ties in the communities did not have problems feeding themselves and keeping themselves
Some people have been able to bring food into their home and not have to experience the lack of going without or being hungry. Yes, people have made their own personal image or idea of what Food Stamps and about the system, however this is a good program to those who don’t abuse it. The only issue that I personally have is that, there are so many people who use this program who don’t need it and mess it up or sell it for profit when there are single parent struggling, disable , people who’ve lost jobs and aren’t eligible for it because the government says they make too much money yearly. Overall this program should be used to help benefit people who are in need and could seriously benefit from the program rather than just using it to get by or stack food in the house. At one point in my life my family had to use the SNAP program but my mother always made sure we had proper well balance food and other things that we like as well. Also during that time my mom became financial stable and we didn’t have to rely on the system anymore. That’s what important and where so people don’t
Food stamps have helped a lot of people out and I have no doubt about that in my mind. Many families depend on
It’s important to realize The SNAP program which actually uses debit cards, provides modest but crucial aid to families in need. SNAP recipients are ripping off the government for millions of dollars by illegally selling their benefit cards for cash sometimes even in the open, on eBay or Craigslist and then asking the government for replacement cards. In addition, several studies have found a correlation between SNAP participation and increased body mass among adult women. “The U.S. Department of Agriculture's 2008 review of available research found that while use of food stamps didn't increase obesity among children, adult men, or the elderly, studies show adult women are 2 to 5 percent more likely to become obese if they receive food stamps for more than a year (Huffington Post)”.
The application process for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits is a tedious process leaving many students confused on the process. Numerous students who do apply are deemed ineligible for benefits, due to the work requirements (Goldrick-Rab et al., 2017). There were 56 percent of college students who were employed while attending college, with 20 percent working full time (Dubick, et al., 2016). Among the food insecure students attending college, only 38 percent of students employed worked 20 hours or more per week which would make them eligible for SNAP benefits if they were to apply (Dubick et al., 2016). Less than thirty percent of food-insecure college students received SNAP benefits (Goldrick-Rab et al., 2017). There
To start off, many families across the U.S. apply for food-stamps when they do not need the help; many make it a point to throw with-lies on their application paper process, and unfortunately, some people get by. Moreover, families obtain the amount of food stamps they receive
Food Stamp is a government-funded program in the United States. This is a program that helps people buy food for their families; in other words, it is a very important program to families living in poverty. It is the nation’s most important program in the fight against hunger. This program was developed in the 1960’s; it is made to improve the nutrition level and food purchasing power of people with low-income. This program is offered to people who cannot afford to buy groceries for their families, regardless of age, color, sex or religion. Food Stamps can only be used to buy food items not hygiene or household items, and it’s offered only on a monthly basis.
Current welfare programs deny the independence of individual recipients in various ways. Americans on welfare tend to become very dependent on the government since they constantly gain benefits without having to work as hard as the average American. Because of handed-out benefits, America 's look on self-reliance, personal responsibility, and advancement has weakened (Will 10). Many welfare programs encourage others to accept benefits from the government, resulting in people becoming lazy and unable to search for work. This is somewhat hypocritical due to the fact that America is known for its independence, responsibility, and self-determination. Because of the encouragement from organizations, the number of food-stamp recipients has increased dramatically (Bovard 2). Self-sufficiency will continue to be an issue if organizations encourage people to accept benefits. In agreeance with O’Brien, "if we truly want low-income families to achieve self-sufficiency, we need to give them the tools, education, and incentives to save for the future--not penalize those who try" (13).
Welfare cuts and non-eligibility programs are one of the reasons why communities run to food banks. Many citizens get checks for either their circumstances or disability; however after paying bills, many don’t have that much to get food with. Welfare checks decrease if the person is living with a medium-income person based on how much that particular person gets in their household. However, they are just staying there until they get up on their feet, but in the government's eyes, they assume
“Many of the people you saw tonight can’t find work and are on food stamps,” he said. “The government gives them coupons to help them afford groceries so they can eat.” This was perhaps the first time in my life that I’d truly and knowingly seen people dealing with food insecurity in their daily lives, and I finally understood why welfare is important and how much—and how little— it impacts individuals living in poverty. For almost a century, welfare has helped keep the “American Dream” alive for people who’ve fallen upon hard times. It’s a symbol of cooperation between all members of our society, chipping in to help their neighbors in need—but it’s not enough. The current level of funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) should be increased. Doing so will give more people access to groceries, thus giving them a greater disposable income with which they can contribute back to
