Argumentative Essay In 2014, almost seventy billion dollars was spent on the food stamp program. Some may say that’s a significant amount of money compared to how much the United States owes in debt. Therefore, there should be more restrictions on who qualifies to get food stamps, and also on how long people can receive them. If people are unemployed, then they should have applied to at least three different jobs before being able to apply for food stamps. If people do have a job, then of course they must be making below poverty level to qualify. The only reason for why a person receiving food stamps cannot pass a drug test, is because the drug being used is for medical reasons only. If one must take the drug test and not pass, then a warning shall be given, along with two extra drug tests given monthly. If the same person does not pass the second time, food stamps should be cut by twenty percent; if they cannot pass the third test given, stamps should be cut by an additional thirty percent. Finally, if the same person has failed four consecutive drug test, or four within three months, food stamps should be cut out completely with a four month penalty before reapplying. The last restriction that should be applied to food stamps is how long you are able to continue receiving them. A student would be to receive stamps as long as they are enrolled in school. A parent, or household with children, can receive food stamps for the child until he/she has graduated, or turned eighteen if the child has dropped out of school. This prevents someone from dropping out of high school, still living with a parent, and the parent receiving food stamps for a twenty-one year old.
