In the video Food as Medicine: Preventing and Treating the Most Common Diseases with Diet, which was released in 2015, doctor Greger gave a live presentation of the most common diseases with the diets of the people. After watching the video I have realized that I need to recheck my diet and make serious amends in it. It will help me to live longer and better, health wise. I will also spread the word in my family and friends as I strongly believe that everyone needs to watch this video and be careful about their eating habits as they can cause the greatest damages to us. I think that it is really amazing to know that we can treat several diseases by increasing the intake of a few foods while reducing the others. I
This video was very surprising, instructive, informative, depressing and occasionally infuriating. I have always known that there were a lot of factors that influence ones health, but I had never really expected it to be this disturbing reality. The video presents a lot of surprising information with any luck individuals will ask themselves serious questions like I did. Optimistically, after seen the video people can account to the things that need to be addressed in order to eliminate this factors and not be eager to judge a set of group of individuals.
The article ‘ Escape from the Western Diet” by Michael Pollan found in the textbook “The say I say” claims that Americans must escape from the western Diet. The western diet is the cause of chronic diseases. Michael Pollan touch the point that the different nutritional theories are behind those diseases. He goes on to argue that the industries used, their nutritional theorie to release new products . Michael Pollan also accused the health industries in fact that their theories are to develop new prescriptions and treatment methode. Denis Burkit suggests that to avoid the disease, we have
Over the last several decades, the diet of society has been continually changing. This has resulted in different formulas for nutrition and the proper portions of foods that must be consumed. To fully understand the various arguments requires looking at numerous viewpoints. This will be accomplished by focusing on Michael Pollan's Escape from the Western Diet in contrast with Mary Maxfield's Food as thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating. These views will highlight how diet and nutrition is based upon individual opinions. This is the focus of the thesis.
In the article “Escape from the Western Diet”, Michael Pollan suggest to the people that they should stop eating a western diet because western diet is also responsible for western diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and many more. In his article he said that “People eating a Western diet are prone to a complex chronic diseases that seldom strike people eating more traditional diets.” He also gave the solution of this problem by telling people to stop eating a western diet. New theories made new treatments to treat different diseases. In his point of view, if people want to escape from western diet they need to stop eating western food daily. He thinks that if people want to stay healthy they should eat food, not too much,
The rats fed more protein had more cancer growth, which proved to Dr. Campbell that people need to eat less protein. The documentary also gives the success stories of many people. Men and women who have diabetes meet with these doctors, follow their diet for just a few months and no longer are diabetic. The narrator and director of the movie, Fulkerson, had high cholesterol levels and other health problems, so he started a whole-foods, plant-based diet. At the end of the film, Fulkerson had much safer levels of cholesterol and was far healthier. The entire documentary is closed with a shot of every main character eating salad together, celebrating their health. It also seems that they are celebrating a convincing documentary. Fulkerson, and the other crew members, successfully argue that Americans should adopt a whole-foods, plant-based diet. They do so using the rhetorical devices, especially logos and pathos.
Michael Pollan says in his argument that the western diet is chiefly to blame for a majority of health deceases, he says “the scientist who blame our health problems on defiances of these micronutrients are not the same scientist who see sugar-soaked diet leading to metabolic syndrome and from there to diabetes, heart deceases, and cancer” (421) Due to all this negative impact to our health Pollan says that the food industry needs new theories to better redesign processed food and the medical community to make new drugs to beget deceases.
More and more studies have gone into how to eat healthier; and while many believe that they have the best idea to fix the issue there are few who actually know what they are talking about. David Freedman does not particularly have all the answers but he does have a good idea of what he thinks is right. His views may not be the best, but to him and many others the views that are embodied in his article are far superior ways to handle it than many others believe. The author believes that through technology we can create foods that are more appealing and more healthy. The main purpose of this essay is to analyze Freedman’s article and take a deeper look into how his beliefs, like the one stated in the previous sentence, are right or wrong.
Through a substantial amount of research the authors prove that by following a fad diet it can cause many adverse effects, as well as shedding light on benefits of exercise and maintaining a balanced diet. In the opening chapters of the book it is discussed why low fat diets do not work and exactly which diets do. While reading about low fat diets and the health risks that they cause, the book draws you in by explaining the patient profile of a 55 year old man, whom had lost his life due to heart attack. By reading this section of the book its outline how we are all responsible for maintaining our own health, and cases
We could institute a national, comprehensive program that would make us a world leader in preventing chronic or “lifestyle” diseases, which for the first time in history kill more people than communicable ones. By doing so, we’d not only repair some of the damage we have caused by first inventing and then exporting the Standard American diet, we’d also set a new standard for the rest of the world to follow (Bittman 299).
The traditional American diet was simple, it was homemade, it was composed primarily of minimally refined ingredients, it was low in added sugars and fats, with the fats coming primarily from animal sources, and required effort to produce, by comparison, the contemporary American diet is much more diverse it's composed a lot of “palatable” sometimes artificial materials, its commercially engineered and sold, it's composed of refined ingredients, it's high in added sugars and fats with the fat coming primarily from seed oils, and requires minimal effort to procure(Pillsbury). At the same time as modern medicine is conquered the leading killers of the 19 century such as infectious diseases modern culture has created a whole new set of epidemics that we must now cure.
Maxfield also makes a significant point of, “…nutritionist suggest that adult humans will eat in a way that is good for them, given the opportunity” (Maxfield 446). This is an example of how the need to eat healthily is linked directly with us. If the ability to make a better choice is available, then that choice will be taken by adults, whilst the job of the adult is to feed their children so you know if the adult wants to make good choices for themselves, they will for their children. We do not need to worry about the health impact of food unless it is taking a mental impact on a person's life like anorexia. These things need to be treated, but when talking about something such as the correlation between food and one's health the evidence is invalid. People need to wake up and realize this. The diets we put ourselves through can be more threatening to our lives than eating what we
One of the things I feel is an issue in the video is that the food bank is not receiving enough from the community and the government. The bank has helped families for many years such as the depression and recession. Although, they are not able to help every family they help feed as many as they can. Food is very limited and the help to feed these families are very limited. In Michigan, poverty is increasing day by day. The food bank does receive many donations
That being the case in economically challenging times, these foods will certainly be sought out. Another contention that the video made was: how the health care system is a money making arrangement not based on prevention and wellness, but based on profit through disease intervention (Mostly Magic, 2009). This contention is profound, and dealing with on a patient level, by demanding every preventative and wellness option from the physician are the patients right.
In this article, Michael Pollan expresses his views on what the Western diet is and how Americans need to escape from it. To the author, a type of American diet consists of an excessive amount of fast food and how it can lead to obesity and illnesses. Pollan expresses how he disagrees with the diet and states that both food and health industries are partially to blame for this. Pollan gives his opinion on the food industry, medical community and his own ideas on how to escape this diet.
Today in the Western Hemisphere, many chronic health problems result from bad eating habits. There are a mix of people who are over-nourished, malnourished, or both. We eat chemically altered, high-fat toxic foods that do not provide a sufficient amount of essential vitamins and
