The tv show series Castle is an exaggeration and dramatization of an individual's underlying motivations in the workforce. In the first episode of Castle “Flowers For Your Grave”, the protagonist Rick Castle is connected to a murder after a killer mimics techniques from his novel. An accomplished mystery writer, he insists on assisting the detective on the case in order to get a feel for the “story”. In order to do so, he uses his connections with his friend the mayor of New York City. At first detective Kate Beckett disapproves of Castle due to his lack of qualifications but later softens when he proves his capabilities. The episode puts forward at first glance an idea that is very important in the work force. Does talent truly trump …show more content…
When asked By Kate Beckett in the first episode why he was following her around, he responds “for the story”(Castle, Flowers For Your Grave). This makes the character seem very two dimensional and self interested. What is not revealed until much later in the series however, is that when Castle was a young boy of all but 11 years old he encountered the body of a young girl in the woods and was confronted by her killer who decided to let him go. The reason why he became a mystery writer was because he was never able solve the mystery of the girl’s death due to her body never being found by the police. Castle choose to stay by Beckett's side in order to research his character, but what kept him there is the same reason why he wrote books, in order to solve mysteries. Again, one can see this underlying message in the plot of the series. The relationship can be both positive and negative as it pushes the individual to become a better person, but also becomes their obsession, as seen in both characters. In addition, Kate Beckett also has a childhood trauma. Her mother was a lawyer who was killed because she got tangled into a conspiracy. Detective Beckett decided to become a detective in order to have a position in the force where she could investigate her mother's death, as well as become a individual who delivers justice to the victims families without cutting corners. What made Kate Becket go from Stanford Law to dective was her mothers death, what kept her was her love for her
The aim of a hospice is to improve the quality of life of the dying
On Death and Dying By Elisabeth Kubler-Ross For my book review, I read On Death and Dying, by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. Dr. Kubler-Ross was the first person in her field to discuss the topic of death. Before 1969, death was considered a taboo. On Death and Dying is one of the most important psychological studies of the late twentieth century. The work grew out of her famous interdisciplinary seminar on death, life, and transition. In this paper, I give a comprehensive book review as well as integrate topics learned in class with Dr. Kubler-Ross' work. Like Piaget's look at developmental stages in children, there are also stages a person experiences on the journey toward death. These five stages are denial/isolation, anger, bargaining,
Kate is also very tough and modest like most men, who are raised and taught to hide their emotions in public. However deep inside Kate is still a female. In the second investigation which Kate had with Ellen, Kate does end up allowing herself to break down with tears in the midst of her conversation about her dead lover Anne. Here, Forrest shows that even though some women are masculine, they are limited to an extent because they are in custody to the biological determinism which determines the limits for the advancing of success based on sex (Rubin Thinking Sex). It is important that Forrest was able to show both sides of Kate: the tough masculine side and the soft elegant feminine side.
A funeral director can be a male or female who handles the care of the deceased from the time of death until burial. The person must attend college and receive a degree in mortuary science. A two year apprenticeship will be a learning business and directing a funeral. Funeral directing is beneficial and rewarding. A two year program is offered locally with duties including handling of remains, embalming, and funeral services (Lee).
Cemeteries intrigue me, and Oakland is no exception to this interest. After years of constant bypassing the cemetery in route to school, I first decided to visit around September of my junior year, and explored the entire cemetery for the next two days. I was immediately infatuated, and have returned 5 more times since then. Throughout my tour I was able to view the beautiful statues, weathered graves, and memorial that held a surplus of information about the social statuses of these individuals, their struggles, and ancestry.
In real life, there are some major problems in the Castle Show. For example, in real life, I don’t think any law enforcement agency would be willing to allow a writer to work alongside detectives on a day-to-day basis to solve cases especially going into a dangerous situation without any protection. For a person like Mr. Castle, the writer in the show, he
Firstly, Kate is noticeably affected almost immediately after the death of her mother and father. We see this by her descriptive quotes about how she was feeling and the observations she made about others in her life. Some instances include “I remember being rigid with fear, not daring to look at him” (19), “it was like being at the bottom of the sea” (53), and “...there was a whirlwind howling through me” (54). These quotes represent how Kate felt overwhelmed by unmanageable emotions; she felt almost numb and empty. She even ends up cutting her finger just to feel something and it hardly hurt at all. This is a confused, traumatized little girl. Next, Kate is affected by the basic principles her parents taught. The simple memory of her parents provoked thought of the Presbyterian Commandments they would follow. These principles shape who she is and represent a background where people do not talk about problems or share emotions. “No, you swallow your feelings, force them down inside yourself, where they feed and grow and swell and expand until you explode, unforgivably, to the utter bewilderment of whomever it was who upset you” (36). Lastly, the trauma she has endured has made her scared. Scared of sharing feelings, scared of commitment, scared of loving someone. Daniel, Kate’s boyfriend, feels he is in the dark when it comes to Kate’s past and her emotions. This is because Kate is simply scared to love him. She proves this and it’s connection to her past by saying, “people I love and need have a habit of disappearing from my life” (89). The death of her parents has definitely shaped who she is but some may say, it helped her show resilience and strength to embrace her past and move
In this essay I will outline the main theoretical models relating to loss and grief.
The story "Flowers for Algernon", by Daniel Keyes, that we read in English was about a mentally retarded person, named Charlie who had an operation to increase his intelligence, but the operation was a failure and Charlie is slow again. He wants to move now so society won’t ridicule him for being slow again. Daniel Keyes wrote this short story for good reasons. Daniel Keyes wrote "Flowers for Angernon" to show people from an outside look on how we treat mentally challenged people. When you treat people as you always do, you don’t see how mean or how cruel it really may be. It could just be your personality or the way you were brought up. By him writing a story on a mentally challenged person wanting to become smart to
After studying numerous books covering personal finance, economy, stock trading, technical analyses of stock patterns, how to become a millionaire, etc, I have found none handling all aspects of personal finance, i.e. the typical authors seem constrained to their own limited area of expertise.
Keeping a person alive by excessive treatment might devastate the family and make the dying suffer tremendously in the end. “Advance medical technology that seems to one person a godsend, extending life, may seem to another a curse that only prolong dying. Dignity can be devalued amid technology focused solely on the biological organism.”
When looking down an alleyway with limited visibility, there can be unforeseen outcomes which gives the lack predictability and produces fear. As reported by Rosenzweig, “Today there are 100,000 gang members vs. 12,000 cops in Chicago. Up to 40 percent of all homicides in major cities nationwide from 2009 to 2011 were gang-related. Gang members were responsible for 61 percent of all homicides in 2011, up from 58.7 percent in 2010.” What Rosenzweig is presenting is that each year, homicide crimes rates and gang population increase dramatically as each year progresses. The significance of the photo of the alley is that it is a very rare opportunity to observe kids playing in the front of their house because the adolescents are vulnerable to the
In the midst of undergoing a serious life-altering incident, one often experiences the feeling of a paradigm shift. It is amazing to see how our perspectives of the world shift when forced to reflect on what is truly important. Such is the way with death. Being near death causes a sharp realization of what is truly important in life--love of family and friends, faith in God, and making the world a better place to live in--and enables one to not merely accept this, but apply it to their life as well. All those typical, average daily worries and concerns about homework, professional careers, food, sleep, personal grooming, etc., while important and necessary in everyday life must seem unbelievably miniscule when the death has wiped ones
Religion itself is simple and yet complex, myths explained the origins of the human species and this made up of different beliefs in the world we live in. Western culture has many religions, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity are just three of the most popular religions in the world’s population. These three religions believe that the universe came into existence and is controlled and governed by one God. The Catholic religion is the world’s largest single religious body and the largest church, they claim the church was founded by Jesus Christ. Orthodox is the oldest religious institution in the world, teaching that is the One, holy Catholic and Apostolic church established by Jesus Christ, faith passed down from the Apostles. Protestant is a
The cemetery I chose to visit and explore was the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. On the way to the cemetery I couldn’t help but feel anxious. When I began to drive past the cemetery to its entrance, all I could see were miles and miles of headstones. It was eerie to say the least. As a kid, whenever my family would drive by a cemetery, my siblings and I would hold our breath until we passed so as to not breathe in the wandering, lost souls. Actually going into a cemetery to look around seemed counterintuitive, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to hold my breath for that long. It didn’t help that right when I entered those black gates that separated the living from the dead, clouds of smoke and ash permeated the air around me due to bodies being cremated on site.
