Good Morning,
Derry Township School District would like to move forward with exploring the idea of Flexible Instructional Days. Flexible Instructional Days (FIDS) employ non-traditional strategies to provide a continuity of instruction on regularly-scheduled school days during which circumstances necessitate an alternate approach. To that end, Dave Sweigert and I have been tasked with assembling a K-12 committee to explore this topic during the 16-17 school year.
You have been recommended by your supervisor as an ideal candidate for this committee. Clearly you have shown leadership, innovation and collaborative skills in the past and we would welcome your participation in this committee. We anticipate holding monthly meetings during the
The exercise was designed so that everyone is assigned to an executive position in PB Technologies. Then, everyone has to choose his or her candidate individually before we attend the executives meeting to come up with a single candidate. My position in the organization was the VP of Marketing. Once I received the exercise’s handout, I read it carefully, compared the three candidates’ resumes and then decided to nominate Suzanne T. Valdes for the Senior VP of Finance and CFO position. I based my decision on the fact that she has the most related work experience and personality to the position, EMBA and she is an insider, which I believe is a very important quality for that position.
In the junior high and senior high building many efforts have been put forth to ensure all students educational needs are being met. In addition to the implementation of the Flex Mod schedule other safeguards have been put into place as a safety net for failing students.
Many schools across the America have tried implementing year-round education. However, some school districts that tried YRE go back to the 180- day schedule (Sardo-Brown, Deborah, and Michael Rooney 1). When year-round education is proposed most of the time opposition is met. In 1992, parents of a possible pilot school were surveyed on their thoughts. 59% of the parents responded. There was an overwhelming amount of rejection. Just 10% of those surveyed favored YRE where 83% were against (Sardo-Brown, Deborah, and Michael Rooney 1).
Based on your experience in and outside of THON, what would make you a good candidate to be on a committee? (Please list examples.)*
Some may argue that we should introduce this new system into all of our schools. While there is a slight chance that using this new method in our school system may benefit us, there would be many shortcomings that would outweigh the good things about it. Although I believe that we should be persistent with our current system, there are minimal changes that could be made to enhance it. Any of the alterations that could be done to improve our system would be minor,
School has played a predominant role in young Americans’ lives for centuries. While parents worked a full five-day week, children were able to learn, socialize, and be safe while their parents were away. The same is true of today’s society. However, some schools are introducing a new concept -- a four-day school week. Although much controversy is raging over this topic, the overall acceptance has been high. Therefore, New Castle Schools should become part of this growing trend and go to a four-day school week.
Have you ever wondered what the difference between traditional schooling and year-round education is? Maybe you didn’t know that there are more than one type of year-round education. A year-round school schedule can benefit educators, students, and even families. Year-round schooling is where the breaks in school are on a balanced schedule. Instead of having a three month summer break, there would be 60 days off and then the students would be back to school. If on a multi track schedule, teachers could use their off time to substitute at their school on a different track or at another school to get paid more. For students, the shorter breaks away from school increase retention rates, therefore reducing the amount of review necessary at
Also, please let us know if you are interested in being a facilitator or advisor for new and existing innovation ideas.
Industries such as business and medicine depend on extreme methods and forward thinking ideas. To be a successful enterprise, one must be willing to take risks and try new things. Within the last century, education has attempted to take a leap of faith by completely flipping the traditional school schedule and idea of summer vacation upside down. Just as with any idea, there are advantages and disadvantages as well as supporters and opponents. Each district must look at their own individual needs and evaluate the trials from schools that have gone before them to decide if year-round schooling would benefit their school.
A four-day school week is a generally new and imaginative thought picking up fame with understudies and instructor over the Assembled States. For a few, the upsides of going to class just four days for each week far exceed the potential hindrances. The budgetary reserve funds to locale that bounce on the four-days-per-week fleeting trend can be colossal, paying little mind to the span of the area. Nonetheless, there are different advantages that serve as inspiration for embracing this new instructive structure.
The greatest need of improvement for my campus is that it needs extended time in a school day for literacy instruction and independent reading. My school does have time set aside each week, which we call “SET”, which is designed to help students by giving them extra tutoring or instruction for all class periods. Most teachers use this time for test corrections or for students to get extra instruction for lessons they missed due to absences or other school functions. We do not have extended school days for literacy.
In order to become a member of this committee, an individual who meets the qualifications would be nominated by the Board, upon the recommendation of the Nominating Corporate Governance Committee; this process occurs annually. Members of this committee are Gregory D. Brenneman, Albert (Al) Carey, Armando Codina, Helena B. Foulkes, and Bonnie G. Hill.
Year round education (YRE) is implemented in 436 U.S. school districts with very few complaints. In fact, school districts that have been participating in YRE and extended school days (ESD) are raving about the benefits in pupil's achievement level, their new found enthusiasm in learning, as well as the many programs that exist in the extended day promoting the decline in latch key children.
It is October 15th. Normally, students would be at school, working for hours on end at math, communication arts, and science. But this year is different. This year your school has now entered into the year-round calendar system. At home, you can enjoy the season of fall with pumpkins, Halloween, and beautiful weather. The idea of year round school has most commonly been pushed aside because of the misconception that it is too much school, or an on-going cycle of learning. However, those who declare this, do not understand the year-round school concept. Year-round school provides the same number of days as the traditional calendar. The difference, which will change our society and the achievement rate of our students in the future, is that the days are reordered into intersessions. The mechanisms of year round school include students attending school for a nine week period, then following this is a three week break. This rotation occurs year-round with a slightly longer summer break. Consequently, Though many people agree with keeping tradition with the popular school calendar, new evidence and testimony proves that year-round school provides the better avenue because the world is evolving, it benefits low income students, and intersessions are more effective than summer break.
The overall logistics run much smoother in schools that have four day weeks compared to the five day week. “Some districts had experienced a decline in dropout rates, decreased disciplinary referrals, improved attendance, fewer class interruptions, more positive attitudes about school, and better staff development” (Yarbrough and Gilman 81). Another logistical benefit to having four day school week is that students have more time to get involved in extracurricular activities due to more availability
