Often times in certain literature, a character may be portrayed as one thing, but interpreted as something else. In “The Odyssey”, an epic by ancient Greek author Homer, we learn the adventures of a man named Odysseus. He goes to embark on a strenuous journey and face multiple challenges, and is described to be as an ideal hero, but the reality is quite the opposite. I believe Odysseus is shown to be incapable and incompetent, however, I also believe it adds depth to the story by showing both sides of the character, making it more interesting to read. One instance when Odysseus shows his deep flaws is when he is trying to anger the Cyclops, and shouts, “...if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus,
Imagine being a crewmate on a ship and you are being attacked by a monster and you are trying to get away from that monster. You get away but the leader of the ship keeps heckling the monster and the father of the monster then gets angry and attacks. You and the rest of the crew are either dead or badly wounded. Like this hero, Odysseus shows these traits in the Odyssey. Odysseus is the opposite of a modern hero because he is full of himself, he always gets into bad situations and is not loyal to his men.
In the book ‘The Odyssey” the author assembled a paradoxical tone through his choice of diction. The word paradoxical means “having the nature of a paradox; self-contradictory.” The author used the words: Dawn, appease and Nobody to display the paradoxical tone in the book.
Throughout the book the odyssey Odysseus the main character makes mistakes and has character flaws that make his journey home a little longer and gruesome. The two character flaws that I think affect him the most are Pride and Unfaithfulness. They are flaws because throughout the book there are different situations and trials Odysseus goes through on his was back to Ithaca. An example of him showing prideness is when they go to island where the giant cyclopes lives. he displays his pride when wanting to claim a guest-gift from the Cyclops. He tells the cyclopes he will tell his name to him if he receives a guest gift. As well as wanting some hospitality from the giant cyclops. Him and his men could have just left or stolen the cheese inside
Throughout the epic poem “The Odyssey”, the protagonist Odysseus is viewed as a very strong person and an amazing leader. However, Odysseus displays many flaws and weaknesses that helps us connect to him. The biggest flaw represented by Odysseus is that he cannot control his men very well, which is shown in various parts of the epic poem. Since Odysseus demonstrates this weakness, it causes him to have many more obstacles and problems that he has to deal with in order to reach his goal. Odysseus needs his men in order to succeed so without them he cannot defeat his enemies and obstacles that await him. In the epic poem “The Sirens”, Odysseus’ men butchered and ate the Cattle of the Sun God. In the “Land of the Dead” which is
One can be judged by their actions, but what truly shapes a person is their personality. Odysseus is an over-confident and ill-tempered man. On the cyclops's island, Odysseus's boasting nearly proves costly. A modest and heroic person would have had his men in mind, rather than himself, and left the island. Also, Odysseus revealing his true identity to the cyclops could very well have resulted in the death of his men. After Odysseus's boasting, Polyphemus prays to his father, "Let him lose all companions, and return / under strange sail to bitter days at home" (Homer 9. (537-8). This prophecy, of course, becomes a reality. Another sign of Odysseus's over-confidence shows while he is explaining himself to King Alcinous. In some of his first words to the king, Odysseus again boasts of his accomplishments. "Men hold me / formidable for guile in peace and war: / this fame has gone abroad to the sky's rim" (Homer 9. (127-8). Another very important fact is Odysseus's position on monogamy. Odysseus believes he's above monogamy, as he stays with many goddesses during his journeys while Penelope stays faithful at home. A hero is not a boasting, over-confident person, but someone who does their actions for no reward.
Every individual has flaws, but it is up to the individual’s ability to control their imperfection in order for him/her to get out of predicaments. The flaw of one person will also not only affect that specific individual, but also the people around him/her. In the epic, The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is not only a courageous, noble, and decisive hero, but also a leader who desires glory, and holds a great amount of pride and curiosity. This eventually leads him to give out his prudence and other unfortunate events that follow. Due to Odysseus’ flaws, him and his shipmates endure a long journey finding their way back to Ithaca after the Trojan War.
When one thinks of an epic hero, such as Odysseus from Homer’s The Odyssey, flaws tend to be dismissed like dirt being washed off a golden statue. However, in Greek mythology even the divine gods and goddesses display imperfect character traits. Faults like Odysseus’ hubris tarnish his heroic image, but he is redeemable through his favorable traits. Although a hero is given high expectations, there is no expectation for him to be completely void of faults because heroes are human.
The Odyssey is a story about how a man named Odysseus travel throughout the world to find his way home. Odysseus has many tragic flaws that get his men killed. As a tragic hero, Odysseus contains tragic flaws, which include him being hubris, a lot of arrogance, and a lot of pride; these flaws negatively impact the story by many of his men dying, and it taking longer for him to get home. A tragic hero is described as a person that makes a bad decision that leads to their demise.
Odysseus and I are both contentious. Odysseus is combative and always ready for a fight we see this is the Odyssey many times throughout the book. An example of this would be when they were going up to Scylla and Odysseus didn’t listen to the advice he was given “I tied on my cuirass and took up two spears” (936). This shows he is antagonistic and is always ready for a fight or argument. Odysseus knows how to fight and win too he killed a man in a very gruesome way “Odysseus’ arrow hit him under the chin and punched up to the feathers through his throat” (955) which that action sparked him killing most of men in Ithaca. I am also contentious and am always ready for an argument but not a fight. Most of my days I am always ready for a political
The Odyssey Essay “I give thanks to my Creator for this wonderful life where each of us has the opportunity to learn lessons we could not fully comprehend by any other means” (Joseph B. Wirthlin). Just like in The Odyssey Odysseus has to learn from his mistakes he didn’t understand before. Homer’s The Odyssey is about a man who goes to war and is trying desperately to get back to his home. On the way home he runs into many problems in which he learns from.
In The Odyssey it shows how a man is coming back in a twenty year trip back to his home Ithaca. As the story goes on Odysseus shows off the many traits when thrown into different situations. When shown they both represent the traits of an epic hero or a ordinary man who can make mistakes. The Odyssey shows a man who is an epic hero who is wise in his decisions and a man who make mistakes while on his trip back to Ithaca.
In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is a noble hero even if he does make some mistakes. Like all humans, Odysseus makes mistakes constantly. There is not one person in the whole entire world that does not make any errors. However, even though people make blunders, many do not want to learn or grow on them. They let their slips stop them and they do not overcome them. Conversely, Odysseus perseveres through his struggles and does not have his mistakes stop him from achieving his goals. He learns and overcomes his missteps, which makes him successful. During his times of struggle, Odysseus becomes a noble hero by being brave, using his wisdom, and caring for his followers.
Rezvan Ngalla Classical Mythology Professor Chris Higgins March 10, 2016 One Person against Himself The Odyssey is one of the many literal master pieces of ancient Greek mythology written by Homer. This work is centered on one man, Odysseus. He had the defining character traits of any hero or protagonist in a story; strength, courage and his most distinguishable character was his wit and quick thinking. Although this epic doesn’t have a precise antagonist, Odysseus was his own antagonist.
The Odyssey by Homer is a novel that transcends time and generations into the lives of people from the 8th century BC to the 21st century AD. In The Odyssey, which is the sequel to The Iliad, Odysseus has finished fighting in the Trojan War for ten years and he has come out victorious, but Odysseus has been trapped on an island by the goddess calypso. The gods get together, mainly brought together by Athena who favors Odysseus, and decide to help Odysseus out by getting him off the island. Then the god Poseidon learns of this and sends a storm to wreck Odysseus ship, because Odysseus had blinded Poseidon’s son who was also a cyclops.
Odysseus, the King of Ithaca is trying to come home, after helping the Greeks win the Trojan War, by making the plan of the Trojan horse. Odysseus and his men struggle through their 10 year journey home and only with Odysseus’ trickery, bravery, and god honoring ways, he is able to make it back alive. Odysseus on his journey back home goes through some human flawed situations, but has many heroic moments. Odysseus overcomes these human flaws, making him become an Epic Hero.
