During the month of August 2016, former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick garnered national attention for not standing for the national anthem, but rather sitting on the bench or kneeling. He justified his actions by explaining that he was protesting the unfair treatment of minorities and the ongoing issues with police brutality, further saying, “When there's significant change and I feel that flag represents what it's supposed to represent, and this country is representing people the way that it's supposed to, I'll stand” (Sandritter, 2016). Ever since, many players have joined this cause and started kneeling for the national anthem. Will Leathers, a senior at the University of Alabama, expressed his opinions on the controversy surrounding President Trump’s comments on the NFL and discusses what our flag represents. Leathers starts off the article with an emotive appeal, discussing the flag, the national anthem, and everything they represent. He evokes feelings of patriotism, but brings reason and logic to his statements, as he says, “We aren’t engaging in a celebration of the flag itself, but of those ideals embodied by it. Namely that it flies “o’er the land of the free” – a land where no man can make another stand, bow, or kneel for anyone or anything against his will. A land where men can speak freely without fear of reprisal from the government” (Leathers, n.d.). Given this perspective, it seems that the players actions of peacefully protesting the national anthem by kneeling is fair and should not be ridiculed by anyone. However this is not the case, as the players who are protesting must fear reprisal from the government, specifically from the President of the United
