Pregnancy usually lasts for approximately 9 months and involves three stages; the first trimester, the second trimester and the third trimester. The first trimester goes from week 1 to week 12 and involves a lot of hormonal changes within the mother, which cause symptoms of pregnancy to occur. The most obvious sign of pregnancy is the menstrual cycle stopping. Some women may also experience:
• cravings of distastes for certain foods
• Mood swings
• Morning sickness
• Fatigue
• Swollen breasts
• Constipation
• A need to pass urine more frequently
• A gain or loss of weight
During the first trimester changes of the baby in order of their occurrence include:
• Spinal cord, brain, heart, arm and leg buds form
• The umbilical cord able to be seen
• Heart begins

• Baby is now considered full term
• Baby may turn to a position with its head down, in preparation for birth
As of 2013, around 353,000 babies were born in one day, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (Be Fruitful and Multiply). Delivering babies is very difficult and strenuous, luckily labor and delivery nurses are trained to help care for the mother during the process of welcoming her newborn into the world safely. Labor and delivery nurses play a very crucial role in helping the delivery of babies and bringing safety and peace to the mother. I am choosing to pursue a career as a labor and delivery nurse because they get to provide care to babies, they get paid well, and they get to assist in the delivery process.
Hockey is one of the hardest sports to play. You can get on a basketball court and know how to run. You can get on a soccer field and know how to kick a ball. You can get on a baseball field and know how to swing a bat towards a ball, but you cannot get on a hockey rink for the first time and not know how to skate. All of these sports are hard, and it takes a while to get good at kicking a soccer ball or swinging a bat. But in hockey, skating is a whole different category that you have to be good in to be good at hockey. What Wayne Gretzky did to the sport of hockey is truly amazing. Wayne Gretzky revolutionized hockey through his amazing skill at the sport, made an impact on the hockey community through his attitude on and off of the rink, and inspired many young players to try be as good as him.
Neonatal nurse practitioners are advanced practice nurses who care for premature and sick newborns in various settings such as neonatal intensive care units, emergency rooms, delivery rooms, or specialty clinics. Although neonatal nurses care for health newborns, neonatal nurse practitioners are skilled in caring for newborns in need of specialized attention. A newborn may be premature due to premature birth, low birth weight, respiratory distress, heart abnormalities and other disorders. Since these infants are so fragile, these nurses assume a lot of responsibility that comes with the career. Their level of care allows them to monitor specialized equipment such as incubators and ventilators.
I would have to say the separation of the "The Female Genital System" and "The Maternity Care and Delivery" subsections of the CPT are necessary and appropriate because they involve different types of care in totally different situations.
Through the Weissman Scholar program I will finally be able to decide what college I would like to attend and pursue my dream of becoming a Neonatal Nurse. If I were to receive this scholarship it would boost my confidence knowing that I took on the responsibility of starting college with a strong foundation that will help me get on step closer to reaching my career goal. This program will push me forward and give me the ability to obtain a degree in Nursing and help me one day achieve my dream of becoming a Neonatal Nurse. Since very few of my family members went to college I find it very important to receive an education so you can have a brighter future. My parents have always struggled throughout my whole life to find the money to support
There are more than 70% of premature babies that are born between 34 and 36 weeks gestation a year. When a baby is born early, or born with birth defects, the Neonatal Intensive Care unit is its first home. The nurse’s in the NICU have the difficult job of preparing baby’s and parents for a health life together. A baby who has been put into the NICU will stay there until it is healthy enough to go home.
Don’t you ever want to know what it feels like to be rushing around your team yelling and encourage the mother to push her hardest, yelling their vital sounds? Well some people do, some people want to feel that adrenaline when they hear a woman is coming in and she’s about to give birth to her child. How would you feel when the family comes back to say thank you for saving their child after a difficult labor?
During Shakespeare’s time, there were only a few curses that had occurred. The curses that had happened were the Macbeth Curse and the curse that was written on Shakespeare’s grave. The Macbeth Curse was a very dangerous curse because their were many famous occurrences of the play that led to disaster, the curse on Shakespeare’s grave would curse anyone that had dug up his grave and moved his bones. There may not have been many curses during Shakespeare’s time, but the few were curses you would not want to mess with. There have been many famous occurrences of the Macbeth play throughout time and each occurrence has led to disaster.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) published the expected standards for pre-registration midwifery education. They stated that Student Midwives are required to assist in the care and support of several women throughout their antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum period. This is achieved via the caseload holding scheme (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2009). Midwifery led continuity of care models are described as care given during the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period from a known and trusted midwife in order to empower a woman to have a healthy pregnancy and birth (Sandall, Soltani and Gates, 2016). In September 2005 research was published supporting midwifery-led continuity of care, which they found was linked to a number of benefits for both mothers and babies, in contrast with obstetrically led and shared care (The Royal College of Midwives, 2014).
Preterm birth can be a devastating experience not only for the mother, but also for the child. This issue has plagued the United States and other countries for many years, and no concrete evidence have been found to tell us why preterm birth occurs. One in eight babies in the United States is born premature each year. The impact of social support on the psychological well-being, attitudes, and behavior of parents is rapidly becoming a major issue. It is becoming more and more difficult for mothers to cope with the long-term and short-term effects of premature birth. These parents’ attitude and behavior can have both a direct and indirect effect on the child's
As a young child, I was always drawn towards the field of health care. I remember reading about the many options that are held within it and wondering what path it would lead me on. Neonatal nursing was something that always came into my mind, but it was often pushed to the side by people and teachers who thought I should become a pediatrician instead. This became a real struggle for me, but as I grew up and began researching and exploring the health care field I came to a decision for myself. I came to the realization that everyone was wrong. I didn’t want to be a doctor at all. This sudden burst of independence from what everyone else wanted was the first step to reaching my end goal. Along with this, an accelerated education, volunteer
According to the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNMb) (2015), home births account for 1.4% of all births in the U.S. In eight years the number of home births in the US increased by 41% (ACNM, 2015b). Providing home births falls within the scope of practice of midwives and is supported by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM, 2015b). A mother can have the option of a home birth as long as the home birth follows regulations set in place by the state and can provide a favorable safe environment for both mother and newborn (ACNM, 2015b). Both the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) state that the ultimate decision of having a home birth is a patient’s right, especially if she is medically well informed (Declercq, & Stotland, 2016).
Normally Pregnancy last 37 to 42 weeks (the average is 40 weeks). Pregnancy is divided into three trimesters, ‘first trimesters’, ‘second trimesters’ and ‘third trimesters’.
Working in a neonatal intensive care unit has been a learning experience filled with a roller coaster of emotions. So many emotions have passed over me through different situations that I have encountered in my three years of working in this type of unit. When I first began my journey in becoming a NICU nurse I was exposed to many things that a registered nurse may not encounter unless they are in an intensive care unit setting. For example, I needed to learn to work with ventilators, medication drips, everyday use of an Ambu-bag and all this with premature babies nonetheless. I have learned that bio-reactions are an automatic signal in our brains which determines how our body will react in certain situations. In the following paragraphs, I will discuss three personal experiences of my personal bio-reactions.
