The concept of music has been a fascinating topic for me since I was able to sing along to Hannah Montana and High School Musical, and maybe even before that. It’s the one thing that has stayed consistent for me since day one. When I was struggling to figure out who I was and who I wanted to be, my mind went blank. I wasn’t involved in any sport or hobby, and I didn’t enjoy much, not even the security of my own bedroom. For a long time, I felt lost. When I was given the option to learn an instrument in middle school, it didn’t occur to me that I was going to change my perspective on life or that I finally found something that I belonged in. It was a matter of time before I realized exactly what I had done.

Playing and listening to instruments help strengthen parts of the brain. For one, “science has shown that when children learn to play music, their brains begin to hear and process sounds that they couldn’t otherwise hear” (Locker 1). One of the main importances of playing music is listening to know when a note has gotten off key. The ability of picking up wrong notes help people listen more closely without having to think about it.
