Pretend play, also known as creative play, imaginative play, and make-believe play begin during infancy from 11 months to 18 months in typically developing children. Pretend play begins to change into other types of play between the ages of 10 and 12 years. When children are playing pretend, it appears as if an inanimate object is real, creating a situation as if there is more going on than what is literally happening. Examples of pretend play can include but not limited to; playing “mom and dad”, play shopping, play cooking, and playing dress-up. Pretend play can be seen as a thinking skill, as children have to understand the meaning of what is happening. This type of play can be seen in a variety of environments such as day care centres, kindergarten classes, elementary school, households etc. The overall aim of the study was to examine the frequency of pretend play in children between the ages 11 months to 10 years of age. In conclusion, we as Marines should always take the initiative as Marines before us have always done throughout history. We can’t be the generation where we lose this leadership trait simply because we just don’t want to do it. In order for me to fix the peers in my unit on the leadership trait initiative I would give classes reiterating how a Sergeant should use this trait as well as give historical examples, then have SGD and have everyone partake in EDG, and finally just have everyone hold each other accountable for not taking the initiative.

In MARSOC’s Assessment and Selection an instructor by the name of Joseph Morrison talked of the word ‘Shinken’ meaning “Razor Sharp.” The Japanese used this to describe the mindset of the individual Samurai due to their complete focus in honing their skills. One main type of play that is considered to be beneficial for a child's cognitive development is pretend play. Pretending is among the most interesting activities of childhood. As many have noted, pretending appears to be an early expression of the child’s ability to use and understand symbols (Piaget, 1945/1962). Furthermore, Piaget (1965) made the point that when children build rules together as they play, they become more independent and increase their ability to see points of view other than their own, contributing to a child's cognitive development. Kim (1999) conducted a study exploring cognitive change underlying pretend play and understanding narrative structures. It involved comparing 4 and 5-year-old children in conditions involving pretend play enactment of stories to conditions using only storytelling.

He exhibits symbolical play where he is able to pretend real objects are imaginary items.
