Finding Diversity Project Is The High School

“If you hate high school, wait till you get to college.” This was a saying I often heard while growing up, said to myself and others, from teachers and parents. I never realized the full implication of this statement; I had assumed it was related to societies expectation that we go to school, get a degree, get a career, get married, raise 2.5 children, and do as society expects of us. However my mentor made me realize something significant: education is not a right but a privilege in our world, and even within our country there is a disparity in how much education people receive and how it benefits their lives. I have never been in an outreach program, as even when I wanted to learn the way they get to learn, I had to do it through homeschooling instead of joining in with the “problem students”. This is because of my family. My family was a traditional settler family which came from dukes and duchesses hundreds of years ago, and is the epitome of white privilege. My family history, with the exception of the Metis side which was largely assimilated into white culture in the mid 1800’s, and actually highlights the white privilege within my family further, was largely linked to the upper class. My family for generations has been able to pass down money, land, resources, and reputation which has allowed me and all my family to live a relatively high quality of life. When I struggle I always know there is someone to catch me. I understand that no matter what I do my family will be able to take care of me. However for some of these kids, no matter what they do, their families are not able to or willing to care for them. Growing up, I had assumed that the outreach program in my school was for students who were not intelligent enough to go to post-secondary and needed to be prepped for the physical labour force through work experience at a young age.
