Unlike the non Diegetic sound during the scene when Jim and Kim are driving away from the crime scene which gives a sense of anxiousness towards the audience , the non diegetic sound when Jim is driving the van and is about to hit Kevin gave a frightening mood to the audience as to what's going to happen. Nightmare Before Christmas shows a lot of low key lighting too. When Jack sings his song about taking Christmas away. They use low key lighting to show his song is dark and scary.
In ES he uses low key lighting Edward in the Big dark castle when the lady first encounters him. This shows how isolated and lonely he was. And him coming away from that darkness signified him trying to really come out. In CACF he uses low key lighting to a similar effect. He uses this on Willy Wonka. When he puts the low key lighting on Willy’s face this shows how in his factory he was very alone and had a troubled past. Which caused him to be more distant when the time came to actually socialize with the kids that came to the factory. In the Corpse Bride he uses this as well. When Victor sits down and plays this piano we get a shot of him and the piano surrounded by low key lighting. This shows how isolated and lonely Victor was. That when he plays his music or paint his painting that he actually comes out of his shell. This shows that lighting that he uses really has a effect on his
Across widespread films the use of cinematic techniques can creates a range of moods and tones, especially Tim Burton. Tim Burton has directed films such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, and Edward Scissorhands. Tim Burton's use of cinematic techniques creates a childish, yet dark, style across films.
First thing Tim Burton strikes the audience with is the music and sound. He succeeds in molding the mood and tone and understanding how the characters are feeling. For example in The Corpse Bride, when the parents are dancing after the dark, mysterious music of the opening, the music turns a little more uplifting. But you can hear an undertone of mischief which gives a sense that something is going to go wrong. Tim Burton adds diegetic sounds when they sang, going back to the point that its ironic due to the fact that they are singing about how great and planned out their day is going to be that day.
The non-diegetic sound creates the mood of each scene. Haunting sounds set the pathway for fear of the characters and maybe even the viewer. During the opening credits of Burtons of 'Edward Scissorhands' creepy sinister music plays. The music and images shown puts the though that something is wrong in the viewers mind. The music basically states that a problem has occurred and during this film at some point it will be solved.
Strange, grim, and unlikely is what most people would describe Tim Burton’s style of writing and his movies. Tim Burton grew up fascinated with fairy tales and the supernatural. He presents a darker version of children stories. He has written books such as “James and the Giant Peach” that were a hit but he also makes movies which use a variety of cinematic techniques in every movie. Tim Burton effectively uses variety of cinematic techniques to evoke emotion in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, and Edward Scissorhands.
Tim Burton used two different types of sounds in the movie Edward Scissorhands. Tim used Diegetic and Non Digetic sounds. Diegetic is sounds that the characters in the movie or story can hear, For example birds chirping, a car door closing, and a phone ringing.Non Diegetic is sounds the characters can’t hear like, music playing in the intro when it shows the credits, or music playing during a flashback.Tim Burton used these types of sound throughout the movie. He used Diegetic sound, he used it when the family had a barbeque the characters could hear the food cook on the grill. He also used it when they played music from the radio.Tim also used Non Diegetic sound, he used it when night turned into day the music was playing. He also used it when
Burton also uses sound such as diegetic and non-diegetic music and sound in order to advance the mood, feelings, and emotions of the audience. One particularly exceptional example of Burton’s use of sound is in the film Edward Scissorhands. Burton uses non-diegetic music in order to signify the relationship between Edward and Kim. He uses music that sounds almost like an angel singing in heaven while Edward is carving an ice angel. While Edward is at work, Kim spots the beautiful, white snow created by the beautiful sculpting of the angel and starts spinning and twirling in it, as if she’s never seen snow as dazzling as Edwards before. This symbolizes the relationship between Edward and Kim and the forbidden romance that will take place later on in the film as their feelings for each other grow deeper and deeper. This persuades the audience to root and cheer on Edward and Kim’s forbidden romance even though they know the love they both have for each other is pointless and will never work out because of their differences. Burton also uses diegetic sound in the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He uses diegetic sound in order to urge the audience to feel mournful and enhance their mood to feel sorrow toward the former Wonka factory workers. In the film, he uses diegetic sound as the massive gates close to Wonka’s incredible factory. He does this to show the
For example, low key lighting is used to flood a science with shadows and darkness ,creating suspense. One of the many films burton uses low key lighting is "Edward scissorhands" one of the scenes take place on Christmas Day where Edward is making an ice sculpture. It makes the house look scary and dirty and broke down and then she finds him upstairs were the roof is broke and Edward is hiding in the corner. Burton uses low-key lighting Burton uses long shot to explain when Edward was mad and he started cutting off his clothes that they gave to him because Edward was
Burton uses sound in many ways, and it's mainly to create a certain mood and tone for that scene. The non-diegetic sound creates the mood of each scene, for example, during the opening of “Edward Scissorhands”, the music starts out as heavenly, then proceeds to transition into ghastly music and foreshadows that something has gone wrong. Something has happened and now the inventor has passed away. Kind of like in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, the oompa loompas start to sing every time one of the children are taken away. Why? Because it's foreshadowing that the child has gone wrong, is spoiled and disobeys almost everything and anything their parents say. This technique is a different way to show viewers boring facts and turn them into interesting facts, to make viewers want to watch again. Burton uses sound in many ways, and he does it to create tone, mood and to show the emotions of current actors
The colors are delightfully illuminated and noticeable in background and foreground. There are two styles of color within the timeline of the film. During the scenes set in the 1930’s, the colors
High key lighting makes the viewer feel very happy and open, since high key lighting is usually used in bright and playful scenes. For example, in Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, when the Willy Wonka is introducing the tourists to the candy room, there is a variation of colors and the lighting used was very bright. By using this type of lighting, it makes the viewer feel joyful and very positive. Also, in Burton’s Edward Scissorhands, the scene when Edward is introduced to Peg’s neighborhood, the lighting is very bright. This makes the viewers understand the differences between Edward’s deep and dark mansion, compared to Peg’s bright and colorful neighborhood. The contrast allows the readers to feel the uniqueness between the two different lifestyles of Edward and
The eerie nondigetic sound contributes a lot to the dream-like feel of Tim Burton’s films because, especially with the music-box-like nondigetic sound, the nondigetic sounds give a sense of fantasy, surrealness. Tim Burton’s style is very fantasy like, while taking on a tone that is darker
