In film making, Mise-en-Scène refers to the overall look and feel of a movie. It includes everything the audience sees, hears, and experiences while viewing a motion picture. Mise-en-Scène may influence one’s mood as they watch a movie. In addition, odors, décor, lighting, and sounds can inspire one’s emotional response to a real-life setting. Citizen Kane exhibits the elements of mise-en-scène to reinforce “loss” as a recurring theme throughout the film. For example, throughout the course of the production, Charles Kane lost important prized possessions, including his mother, which steered him on a negative course. During the dinner scene, Charles and his first wife Emily were at the table conversing, which displayed many elements of design that foreshadowed their future plans as a couple. The way the house is presented in the beginning scene provides an inference to the attitude and personality of Charles Foster Kane in his elder years. The 3 tiers of fencing in view describe how Kane is isolated, lonely, and private. The dark skyline and abundance of foreign landscape characterizes how he has exotic taste. Lastly, the gondolas from Italy indicate how he wants the world to focus on him. Elements of design are used heavily in the scene when Susan Alexander is sick in bed due to depression of not wanting to be an opera singer. The director Orson Welles created Susan to look weak and lifeless that showed viewers how controllable Charles was. The light was dim on her and bright on Charles. Charles was elegantly dressed while she looked like she was about to die. Every detailed element makes viewers conclude the complicated relationship between these two characters, and how they treated one
