Comparing Bollywood Movies 3 Idiots and Dangal Bollywood movie is the Indian Hindi film that has a great significance in the film industry worldwide. It is very different from the Hollywood movie that we are familiar with since it always incorporates cultural elements such as traditional Indian music and dance, and also expresses national identity. 3 Idiots and Dangal are two recent Bollywood films that won multiple international awards. These two films not only comprise some traditional Bollywood conventions such as the use of traditional dances and music, but also demonstrate recent Bollywood trends such as gentrification and engaging social issues. 3 Idiots is a Bollywood comedy that was released in 2009. It is about three engineering students named Farhan, Raju and Rancho. In India, most students study engineering because it is the most well paid job. However, Rancho has a different view; he believes that people should pursue their own interest and study what they are passionate for. He goes against the norm, argues with the college director “Virus” about the strict education system, and convinces Farhan and Raju to be who they want to be instead of whom their family or society wants them to be. Dangal, on the other hand, is a Bollywood sports film that is based on a true story. It is about how Mahavir Phogat, a national wrestling champion, trains his two daughters Geeta and Babita to become India’s first world-class female wrestlers. Both films incorporate typical Bollywood elements such as music and dance into the film. As many people know, Bollywood films are known for their “vibrant rhythmic and melodic music [that are combined] with lavishly choreographed dance” (Ransom 34). This Bollywood characteristic is particularly obvious in 3 Idiots; it has countless dancing scenes, and most of them are very traditional, vibrant and festive. Besides dance, music is also an important part of this film. Each of its song is composed according to the scenario given and the emotion that the director wants his/her audience to feel. For example, “All Izz Well” is one of the catchier songs in the movie that sings about how life is sometimes out of our own control, but all will be well. This song is relatively fast
