His fight for prime minister of Cuba was not an easy task for him. He had to fight for it. Castro led 160 of his men in a attack on Moncada Barracks. His plan was to take weapons and tell of his revolution from the Barracks radio station, but most of his men died and Castro got arrested and put on trial for trying to overthrow the Cuban government. Lead vehemently by Che Guevara and Fidel Castro, the Cuban Revolution began on 26 July 1953 and continued sporadically until they overthrew Batista on 1 January 1959. The revolution mainly was inspired by Batista’s corrupt dictatorship and his lack of interest on the unemployment and social problems facing the nation. During his first term he was supported by the Communist Party of Cuba, then he turned anti-communist. On the first day of the revolution 26 July 1953, the rebels stormed the Moncada Barracks in Santiago and as a result Fidel was sentenced to fifteen years in prison. Only two women participated in this attack named Haydée Santamaría and Melba Hernandez (Shayne: Feminisms ).

In the 1950’s, tourists visited the island of Cuba for its warm beaches, culture and Spanish colonial architecture. But underneath the surface, was a revolution ready to burst through the Cuban people they just needed the right person to lead them. Cuba at this time was run by a Political Dictator named Fulgencio Batista.
The Cuban Revolution began not with Fidel Castro’s takeover, but with Sergeant Fulgencio Batista’s power hungry struggle. In fear of losing the 1952 election, Batista took over the country and eliminated them. Many people were disgusted, even offended that Batista would do such a thing. This is what sparked Fidel Castro 's hatred toward the Batista regime. He began plotting Batista’s downfall, later having the help of Ernesto “Che” Guevara. July 26, 1953 is a day that shall live in infamy in the Cuban history. It is the day in which Castro made his first move. He gathered a group of about 138 men to attack the Moncada compound. He believed that a surprise attack would be more successful due to the lack of weapons at hand. This proved to be rather untrue, since many of the men were captured. Federal soldiers were killed, amounting to about 19 deaths. The rebels that were left were either shot or managed to escape. Fidel and Raul
The Cuban Revolution was period in Cuba of chaos and conflict. This revolution took place between 1953 and 1959. It was led by Fidel Castro against the government of Fulgencio Batista.
The Cuban government was not ideal for its people at the time, so they decided to initiate a change. Before Castro’s revolution, Cuba’s economy was highly based on tropical fruits, sugar, and tobacco. During this time, the government of Cuba mainly consisted of wealthy land-owning conservatives. Fidel Castro, a strong liberal who thought the Cuban government was corrupt, decided to bring together a band of two-hundred revolutionaries (Carey, Jr. 15). These revolutionaries attacked the Moncada Military barracks on July 26th, 1953 resulting in a failure that earned both Castro and the revolutionaries a ten-year prison sentence. Two years into his sentence, Castro was exiled to Mexico and began to plot another attempt in Mexico City. After many battles with Cuba’s National Army, Castro’s rebels were able to keep Cuba in a state of turmoil while other rebel groups were able to gain control. Through his actions, he was able to gain the support of the Cuban people who thought he was the logical choice for the new leader (Carey, Jr. 15).
Fidel was put on trial for making armed uprising. He was found guilty for this and was sentenced 15 years of prison.
The Cuban revolution was the spark that ignited the flame of communism in Cuba. The developing nation gained independence only as recently as 1898, and was already filled with an atmosphere of distrust and resentment towards the United States. In July of 1953, a revolution began in Cuba between the United States backed President Batista and Fidel Castro. Fidel and his brother Raul Castro lead a series of guerilla warfare battles against the forces of President Batista. “I am Fidel Castro and we have come to liberate Cuba,” stated Fidel Castro. In January of 1959, Fidel Castro became the President of Cuba. With the regime of Fidel Castro, Cuba would fall to communism.
The revolutionary expedition to overthrow the Batista regime began in Mexico on a yacht named Granma (Guevara, 20). The Granma was nothing more than a diesel-powered cruiser designed to house twelve people at one time (Guevara, 20). On November 25th, 1956 the Granma boarded eighty-two fighters of the Cuban Revolution (Guevara, 24). Amongst these men included their fearless leader Fidel Castro, second in command Che Guevara, and Camilo Cienfuegos. Fidel Castro, deciding to support the overthrow of Batista’s military, founded a military organization of his own called The Movement (Guevara, 10). In July 1953, Castro and his men attacked the Moncada Barracks, in order to assassinate Batista. Unfortunately the attack failed, causing many of Castro’s soldiers to die and lead to his arrest (Guevara, 10).
In 1940 to 1944, communist Fulgencio Batista withheld power as the president of Cuba and then from 1952 to 1959, United States backed dictator until fleeing Cuba because of Fidel Castro’s 26th of July Movement. Socialist Fidel Castro governed the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 and then as President from 1976 to 2008. Fidel Castro’s intent was to provide Cuba with an honest democratic government by diminishing the corrupt way in which the country was run, the large role the United States played in the running of Cuba as well as the poor treatment & the living conditions of the lower class.
The start of the revolution started on July 26, 1953. Castro had very few rebels alongside him and they didn’t have many weapons so their first target was the Moncada barracks. Castro and the rebels were heavily outnumbered and the attack ultimately failed resulting in heavily casualties by the rebel. Whatever rebels that were not killed during the assault were captured by Batista dictatorship including Castro and his brother.
