Getting your first job is always exciting, but with it comes a lot of work. From June to the first day of school there is so much to get done! You need to meet some of your students and figure out what they have planned for the summer. Is there stuff you have students going to and what do the students expect? Once your contract starts, you must get to work. The first thing that needs to happen is to get into the school and your classroom. I want a list of students enrolled in classes and FFA. See if the school has a list of officers and supporters of FFA. If at all possible, get into contact with someone who knows what has happened in the past. During this time, I would also have the students fill out a form about their SAE’s. I would want to get a feel for what their SAEs are and what they are currently doing with them. I would also have an area for them to check about when would be a good time for me to come visit their SAE site. I want to get to know the students and show them that I care about what they are doing. This would be a way to show them I want to be involved and see what they are doing. I would also want to get together with the officer team and the alumni chapter or advisory board if they have them. Once I get an idea of what usually happens in the summer and in the program in general. I would start to plan for those things and figure those details out. I would make sure to get a good handle on the summer stuff and visit some SAE’s, especially the upperclassmen. I would then start to focus on the classroom and the teaching stuff. From experience, I know that the classroom can be a disaster and challenging when you come into it. Depending on who the teacher was before you, there could be a lot to do. There are probably going to be cupboards, storage and papers to go through. I would be cleaning and organizing stuff to make it my own. I need to have my room set up how I want it and know where things are. This is so important for me to feel “at home” and comfortable in the
