Ferdinand Magellan was born in 1480, in a stone farm house in Portugal. His father's name was Dom Ruy Magellan, and his mother's name was Donha Alda De Mesquite. His father was a Portuguese nobleman and owned a large amount of land. He was also a sheriff, an honorary position awarded for distinguished service to the crown. Ferdinand's brother was named Diago De Sousa, a name he took from his wealthy grandmother, his sister was named Isabel Magellan. His family seemed to care about each other and respected one another. His family owned cows, sheep, hogs, and goats and fields of wheat, rye, corn and vineyards full of grapes. Ferdinand and his brother and sister had to help the tenants (people that rented and farmed the land), raise the …show more content…
Magellan was certain that he could find the Spice Islands by sailing west, and in 1508 he asked King Charles I for some ships. King Charles I gave him five ships: the Trinidad, San Antonio, Victoria, Conceptio, and the Santiago. In 1519 he set sail for the Spice Islands, first stopping at the Canary Islands. His second stop was Rio De Janeiro, and they traded a lot with the natives there. Later on they stopped at Rio De La Plata for supplies. When nearing the tip of South America, they looked for a strait which connected the Atlantic Ocean with the South Ocean that had been seen by a sailor in 1513. After they found the strait, some people wanted to turn back but Magellan was convinced the Spice Islands were not much further. Once the other captains tried to take over all the ships, but didn't succeed. One was killed but the others were put into hard labor. Magellan named the South Ocean the Pacific Ocean because Pacific meant calm. A lot of men died of scurvy because there wasn't enough fruit and vegetables. Success had made Magellan a very religious man, so he tried to convert some Islanders to become Christian, and succeeded in turning a tribe Christian, but made a fatal mistake by agreeing to help the tribe fight an enemy tribe. Magellan was killed in the fight against the natives, and another man called Juan Sebastian finished the voyage and was given all the credit for sailing around the world. Out of the five ships only two ships, the
Ferdinadad Magellan was born in 1480 in Portugal. He was well educated in the cartography and astronomy fields. While Magellan was in his forties, he had planned a long trip to sail across the Atlantic ocean in order to find a straight that leads him to Asia. This is where he would find all the spices he wanted to gather. He had harvested 270 men to carry out his plan.
Ferdinand Magellan is the son of Portuguese nobility and a student of cartography and astronomy. Magellan had a goal to discover a western sea route through the Americans that led to the Spice Islands. Throughout this voyage Magellan wanted more such as his own fleet which was refused to be given by the King of Portugal. Instead, the Spanish king provided an armada or fleet or ships of five. Magellan employed a group of men in their teenage years and twenties which later staged a mutiny.
1519: a Spanish armada of five ships set sail that would soon be the first to circumnavigate the globe. Their captain, a Portuguese noble, was an accomplished student of cartography and astronomy. Europe’s cravings for spices sent Columbus to Asia, and into the barrier that was the Americas. Magellan’s expedition sought to find a way through, on a mission to bring a new trade route and immense wealth to Spain. Through the crew’s starvation, two mutinies against him, and his harsh personality and lack of accomplishment, Magellan proved his life was not worth saving.
As you may know, the well known man, Ferdinand Magellan, has set sail to find the spice islands, but has he been well enough to be defended by his crew? He has definitely shown firm discipline to his crew, this had to be set down after several crew members tried muntiny toward him. His firm discipline has took control over the crew members to the point where they have been given a second chance. In Document B it had gave a source from one of the crewman that sailed on the ship with him, that witnessed every bit of the journey. He has also shown complete determination to find the spice islands.
Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus was born somewhere between August 26th and October 12th in Genoa Italy, 1451. His birth name being Cristoforo Colombo or in Spanish Cristobal Colon. His father was a weaver. Christopher had at least two brothers. n 1485, Columbus took his son and went to Spain; there he spent almost seven years trying to get support from Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain.
Lastly the third reason why Magellan led himself to his deathbed. Magellan’s navigational skills were poor. According to Over the Edge of the World, By Harper Collins “he regularly sent small scouting parties in the long boats”, “they would go and come back with news of the findings.. And the rest would follow” Gines de Mafra recalled. This evidence shows that Magellan had planned the way easily, but doing it was difficult. Magellan purely relied on his search parties to go throughout the way. You might argue that he still got through and reached the spice islands, but he reached there with just a handful of men in his Armada.
1. Christopher Columbus Born 1451 in Genoa Christopher Columbus was a sea traveller at a young age. Sailing in service of the Spanish Queen and King Columbus set forth to find a westward route to Asia. Columbus sailed the seas with the Nina Pinta and the Santa Maria and hit land in 1492. Met by friendly faces Columbus called these guys and gals Indians no knowing he actually landed in North America.
The name Christopher Columbus is recognized by many as that of the discoverer of the New World. Variations of this famous name change according to nation, being referred to by the Spaniards as “Cristóbal Colón” and, by those of his own Italian heritage, as “Cristoforo Colombo”. Aside from these insignificant contrasts, his narrative remains unfaltering in its global recognition as a tale of hardships faced and victories won, all met with indubitable passion and determination embodied by Columbus himself to achieve his goals. In August of 1492, he, along with his 87 men, set off in search of a western route to Asia aboard three renowned ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. This expedition and the four that would follow began with ambitious visions of monetary gain, religious propagation, and glory, the entirety of these with the overarching theme of competing in the imminent race for continental, and perhaps world, power between civilizations. Before executing this tremendous voyage, however, it was required of Columbus to embark on a search for a willing sponsor with access to resources he otherwise would not be able to obtain. The Genoese explorer at last persuaded rulers of Spain Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon to finance his trip due to a combination of characteristics taking place during his final request of them, specifically the unification of religion during this time, the economic advantages the quest would bring, and the impeccable timing of
Magellan was given credit for being the first to travelling around the world. He had begun his voyage on September 20th, 1519. Magellan was fascinated and determined by the idea of finding the Spice Island. Magellan had done many minor explorations before. The exploration of Columbus gave him the idea of a successful expedition to The Caribbean. Magellan had asked the Portuguese king to support his expedition but the king had denied his offer. So he went to Spanish Royalty to ask for help which was granted. The Spanish King agreed to give an armada of five ships. Magellan should have been defended because he is determined, he has good navigation skills and he was religious.
Christopher Columbus was born before October 31, 1451. He was an Italian explorer, navigator, and colonizer.Christopher was the son of a wool merchant. He completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean. He later died May 20, 1506.
He manipulated, enslaved and caused the extinction of the Taino. His ill-treatment of the people showed that he was a villain because it was cruel and unjustified. In his letter to the King of Spain he said" Your Highnesses, as Catholic Christians, and princes who love and promote the holy Christian faith, and are enemies of the doctrine of Mahomet, and of all idolatry and heresy, determined to send me, Christopher Columbus, to the above-mentioned countries of India, to see the said princes, people, and territories, and to learn their disposition and the proper method of converting them to our holy faith." The idea of using faith and religion as a way to excuse and vindicate his killing of the Taino is wrong. No matter, his good deeds or acts of bravery, the killing of innocent men and women, out shadow the blessings came from his
Although little is known about Christopher Columbus historian have inferred and determined some evidence about his life. Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy. He was born in 1451. Columbus grew up with 4 siblings and they were all older than him. His father was a wool weaver.
Christopher Columbus set sail in 1492 on a mission to find an all water route to the western Indies, instead Columbus reached North America where he continued his search for gold and trade.
After his voyage to San Salvador, he then made 3 other voyages to Cuba, The Bahamas, and Hispaniola. Although he was searching for unexplored land, he was also looking for gold which he was unsuccessful in finding. Also in his travels he planned on converting the Indians to Christianity. In Columbus’s entire life he never believed that he had found a new continent. His final voyage was to Jamaica which ended because of a ship wreck. When he was rescued, he was delusional and once he arrived back in Europe, he soon passed away.
Columbus left his father’s business to join a sailing expedition which ended in a shipwreck near Portugal. He decided to stay in Portugal with his brother and started a family. After his wife died, he was interested in helping his country find a faster way to Asia without paying the Muslim Empire taxes. Since Columbus had read and heard that Asia could be reached by sailing west, he wanted to attempt this expedition and fulfill his dream of going to China. After seven years of not being able to find support for his exploration, he was finally lucky enough to get support from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. Christopher persevered and was willing to risk his life in order to gain fame, fortune, and fulfill his dream. Christopher was given 87 men and three ships, the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, which left in August 1492. Christopher headed west into the Atlantic Ocean, as he had understood that the world was round (but much smaller with his wrong calculations) and that China was on the same latitude as Portugal. On October 12th, Columbus’ crew finally spotted land, which was an island in the Caribbean, and called it “San Salvador”. He visited many nearby islands, including Cuba and Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic). Since Christopher thought that he had landed in India, he called the natives “Indians” which is still incorrectly used today. Columbus quickly
