Fat America
American families now in days have become too busy to enjoy a nice hot meal together. Yet, thirty-five percent of U.S. adults and seventeen percent of teenagers are obese. As obesity increases in U.S. homes so have the effects of the disease on the American family(301).
According to MedicineNet.com obesity is defined by National Institutes of Health as a BMI (Body Max Index) of thirty and above. A BMI of fifty would be about fifty pounds overweight. BMI is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. A high BMI usually means high body fatness. Obesity is based on both genetic and behavioral factors. Although both these factors can play a huge role in obesity it is time for Americans to own up to the fact that we are making ourselves obese.
The Obesity Society states that, “obesity is one of the most pervasive, chronic diseases in need of new strategies for medical treatment and prevention. As a leading cause of United States mortality, morbidity, disability, healthcare utilization and healthcare costs, the high prevalence of obesity continues to strain the United States healthcare system.” If obesity is causing all the issues why are

Parents are so focused on providing for the family that it has affected what agents of socialization are being introduce to their children. Now in days the biggest agent of socialization in a child’s life is multiple types of media. The American Psychological Association states that children of today ages ranging from eight to eighteen spend about forty-four and a half hours per week in front of some type of media. That does not help our youth at all what so ever. Spending that much time on some type of media means that those children are more than likely not exercising. Obesity is defined as defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Obesity is not only based on an individual’s weight but also their BMI. A BMI greater than or equal to 25 is overweight. A BMI greater than or equal to 30 is obesity ((Organization, 2013). Obesity is the most common preventable deaths and the fifths leading health risk globally. Obesity has also been linked to other debilitating diseases and can increase a person’s chances of being hospitalized. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death (cdc.gov, 2014).
Obesity is usually defined by using the body mass index (BMI). A persons BMI is worked out by dividing the persons weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared. To be classified as obese a person’s BMI will be equal to or over 30. (CDC, 2015)
Are Americans, where obesity is found to be a major struggle, in jeopardy with the various aspects that may cause obesity, such as poor eating habits, lack of physical activity, etc.? Poor eating habits such as eating processed foods is one reason for weight gain in children and adults. These eating habits are affordable, tasty, and an easy way out when an individual does not want to cook. Obesity is a personal issue that many have struggled with all their life. There are many risks that come along with being obese as well as ways to overcome it. In order to explain this the research report will ask: do individuals who are obese know the various health risks that come along with the constant weight gain and how to lose the weight
Obesity is when a person has excess body fat. It is calculated by dividing one’s weight by his or her height to get the body mass index (BMI=kg/m^2). This number is also used to screen for health problems that maybe be caused by certain weight categories. A BMI of 25-29.9 is considered to be overweight and over thirty is considered obese. A third of children are overweight (CDC, 2014). Obesity leads to significant physical and mental health consequences. Obese children are at risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, type two diabetes, high cholesterol, coronary artery disease and hypertension (CDC, 2014).
Obesity is an illness in which your body mass index (BMI) is higher than 35. We use BMI to calculate body fat which help us to decide if the person is having a healthy body weight for their size. A person is said to be obese if they have a high degree of body fat and overweight. Obesity can also be described as too much fat being stored in the body. The simplest way to check if a person is obese or not is to check their body mass index. Which is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared.
“Obesity is a disease that affects more than one-third of the U.S adult population (approximately 78.6 million Americans). The number of Americans with obesity had steadily increase since 1960, a trend that has slowed down in recent years but show no sign of reversing”.
According to the case study and our textbook obesity has become an epidemic due to a decline in physical activity and poor eating habits. Children are spending more time watching television and playing video games instead of being active and playing outside. According to our text book “on average U.S children watch almost 6 hours of television programming a day” (Anderson, Root, and Garner, 2015). Another contribution to the obesity epidemic are parents. According to our textbook, “if both of the parent are obese, chances are that their children will also become obese”. (Anderson, Root, and Garner, 2015). It is very important that parents make an effort to lead by example, by being physically active and having more healthy non processed real
Obesity can be defined as been overweight with excess accumulated body fat by subcutaneously and viscerally; resulting in a high body mass index (BMI) which has negative effects on health (Taylor et al, 2010). BMI is defined by dividing an individual’s weight in kilogram by the square of the individual’s height in meters (kg/m2) which indicates if the individual is underweight, overweight or obese; having a BMI equal to or more than 25kg/m2 is classed as overweight while having a
“Aren’t all Americans fat? Don’t you all live like the Kardashians? Aren’t you all mean?” As I stood in front of a classroom full of high school students in a foreign country I was asked these along with a numerous more stereotypical questions. At first, I felt shocked and ashamed of the country I had come from. Why did all these students expect me to be fat and lazy? After spending five days living with a family and receiving questions from all of their friends I began to realize that they were not trying to offend me. They simply did not know enough about the United Students to form opinions other than the ones they heard on TV.
The Body Mass Index (BMI) formula is used to estimate the proportion of fat a person has based on their HEIGHT and WEIGHT. Adults with a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 are considered to be at a normal or healthy weight, adults with a BMI between 25 and 29.9 are considered to be overweight, and adults with a BMI of 30 or higher are considered obese.
Obesity is a worldwide issue. To declare you are obese you have to have over a BMI of 30. BMI is estimating total body fat to muscle. Obesity can run through the family, or come from depression. Many people become obese because of
An obesity epidemic is when there is a constant rise in the number of cases of obesity among a population. Each person in the United States has a different reaction to the types of food they consume. Obesity is influenced more by environmental factors but can also be influenced by genetic factors. Environmental factors include lack of physical activity, individual response to food, the environment itself, television consumption, the ability to super size meals, and consumption of large portion meals. Some genetic factors include monogenic and polygenic mutations and fat mass and obesity associated proteins (FTO). Body Mass Index (BMI) is your weight divided by your height and can determine your weight status relevant to your age. If your BMI is over 30 or higher then you are considered to be ‘overweight’ according to the CDC.
According to Medical News Today, obesity is a condition where a person has gained so much body fat that it could have an adverse consequence of their health. If a person's body weight is at least 20% higher than it should be, he or she is regarded obese. If the Body Mass Index (BMI) is within 25 and 29.9 you are considered overweight.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement tool used to determine excess body weight. Overweight is defined as a BMI of 25 or more, obesity is 30 or more, and severe obesity is 40 or more. Overall the problem stems from the general citizens lack of work ethic; in recent years that ethic has declined severely. It is the inability or flat out unwillingness to work and/or struggle to get what you want. The table below highlights the increasing obesity problem.
“The term “obese” is used for every overweight person who has a high percentage of body weight”. Obesity is defined when a person has 20% higher body fat than an average person. Obesity in many ways causes negative effects on health such as difficulties in breathing and difficulties in walking this is because the body accumulates fat that the body cannot handle. However, the body mass index is measured in two ways, which are the height and weight of a person to see if that individual is underweight, average, or overweight or obese. To know and understand how a person is obese is by the BMI body. If a body BMI is between 25 to 29.9 they are considered overweight but if the person is above 30 is classified as obesity.
