As chapter one was the most interesting to me so far, I have chosen to summarize and review it. The main theme in this chapter is to explain and describe the making of the fast food industry. Schlosser goes through the stories, inspiration and influences of, what he has entitled the chapter, “the founding fathers” the men who started the fast food industry. Schlosser begins the chapter with the story of Carl N. Karcher, the creator of Carl’s and Carl’s Jr., saying how his life was that of “The America dream, and a warning a warning of unintended consequences.” (Schlosser, 13) Carl moved out to California when he was 20 years old, after his uncle gave him a job at his feed and seed store in Anaheim. This is where he met his future wife and began his family and bought his first hot dog cart. While his wife worked the hotdog cart, carl worked a bakery, his hotdog cart business rapidly grew until in turned into a drive in BBQ restaurant. which lead to the opening of the Carl’s Jr. fast food restaurants. …show more content…

The first speedy service assembly line fast food joint. Which brought entrepreneurs from miles around and business owners looking in to copy and reinvent the brother’s ideas and adapt them to their own restaurants. Soon there was hundreds of what they called “self-serving” fast food places across California and the USA like, Wendy’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, and KFC.
