Farewell Address By George Washington: A Literary Analysis

Decent Essays

Literary Analysis Leaders are a vital instrument in the orchestra of how the world turns today, but often times the responsibilities of leaders are misconstrued. However, there are several texts out there that explain fully what a leader’s role is. Two of these texts are The Odyssey by Homer and “Farewell Address” by George Washington. The authors of these documents were very wise and respected in their times, one being an eternally famous philosopher and the other the very first President of the United States. The Odyssey by Homer and “Farewell Address” by George Washington display clearly the loyalty, unity, and humility a leader should have. The loyalty that a leader needs to have is very important, and it is described in slightly different …show more content…

In The Odyssey Book IX, unity is described when Odysseus and his men sack the city of Ismarus. Odysseus and his men were in need of food and supplies after spending six years in the city of Troy so they sailed to Ismarus to retrieve such things. After sacking the city, Odysseus says to his men, “that we had better make off at once, but my men very foolishly would not obey me (Homer). As a result of his men not obeying him, the Cicons who had escaped called to others who were further inland, and the Cicons returned with an army who was, “more in number, and stronger, and they were more skilled in the art of war” (Homer). This army attacked Odysseus and his men, and “the Cicons got the better of us, and we lost half a dozen men from every ship we had” (Homer). This is a lesson in unity in that if there was a better bond of trust and respect between Odysseus and his men, the men would have listened and left. Instead they lost a lot of men. In “Farewell Address,” Washington says that, “One of the expedients of party to acquire influence within particular districts is to misrepresent the opinions and aims of other districts,” which means that for one to have his or her way, one will try to spoil the other possible way with …show more content…

In The Odyssey Book XII, it can be seen that Odysseus is a very religious man. The text says that, “I (Odysseus) went up inland that I might pray heaven to show me some means of getting away,”(Homer). Religion means that one is putting something or someone else above themselves and realizing that he or she can not be the endgame or the thing he or she works toward his or her entire life. The detail that Odysseus is religious means that he is also humble, which is extremely important. Humility means realizing that there is a greater good above what a single person can control. Washington was humble and in his “Farewell Address” he talks about his own faults. However, at the end of him addressing his faults he states that, “the faults of incompetent abilities will be consigned to oblivion,”(Washington). What this means is that Washington realized the greater good and how his faults were insignificant to the greatness that the United States was. He realized this and this was his message he attempted to send in his Farewell Address. He was teaching the citizens of the United States that unity is very important and that the creation of a greater good was what was needed. However, he is also saying that that unity or greater good means nothing if there is no recognition of a greater good to begin with, which is
