After viewing the most recent rendition of Fantastic Four, directed by Josh Trank, it is nearly impossible for one to contend that the film was not a disaster. From ongoing inconsistencies to poor special effects to nonsensical plot points, Fantastic Four failed to deliver quality in almost every element of the film. However, there were a number of causes behind the scenes that led to the film's collapse, including the misguided narrative direction of the film, the uncompromising tension between director Josh Trank and 20th Century Fox, and Trank’s destructive and sophomoric behavior during and following the production process. To begin, it is essential to consider just how poorly executed Fantastic Four was. Without getting into too many …show more content…
Fox originally had put their faith in Trank because of his outstanding work on the studio’s 2012 film Chronicle. However, tensions between Fox and Trank began as early as the casting process. According to reporter Anthony Breznican of Entertainment Weekly, the studio wanted someone other than Miles Teller to play the part of Reed Richards, though Trank fought to guarantee Teller a role in the film (Breznican). Fox also demanded that Kate Mara was cast as Sue Storm to the dismay of Trank, and sources say Trank responded by acting “cruel” and “merely cold” toward Mara (Breznican). Some of those who worked on the film contested that Trank was most irritated with Fox production president Emma Watts. Many of those close to Fantastic Four told Entertainment Weekly that the studio “delayed casting and script approvals, slashed the budget by tens of millions from what was originally promised during the development phase, and tried to force last-minute script changes to the film just as principal photography was beginning” (Breznican). Reports also show that enormous changes, rebuilt sets and reshoots were scheduled in the months before the movie’s release (Johnston). Furthermore, one source allegedly claims that in the final phases of the film’s production, Trank was left out …show more content…
Stories of Trank’s emotionally and physically destructive behavior emerged quite early on. One testimony from a crewmember described that Trank “showed up to set late or so high he couldn’t speak almost everyday”, if he even “show[ed] up at all” (Shaw-Williams). “He treated crew terribly,” he continues, “trashed the house the production company rented for him, … [and] did a couple hundred grand worth of damage. … [S]o much damage … that [Fox CEO] Jim Gianopulos came to Baton Rouge and personally apologized to the owners.” Trank’s erratic, aggressive behavior off-set translated into hostility and lividity towards the actors on set (Shaw-Williams). In fact, the August issue of Entertainment Weekly (via ComicBook.com) claims that despite the fact that Trank fought for having Miles Teller in the film, Trank “ended up almost fighting Teller,” who is known to have “a reputation for sarcasm and recalcitrance while working.” Trank and Teller “[dared] each other to throw the first punch” in their physical conflict, but neither did (Jayson). To top things off, Trank responded to early critics of the film through a meltdown on Twitter, expressing his frustration at the studio for the film’s faults (O'Kane). On August 6th, 2015, he tweeted: “A year ago I had a fantastic version of this. And it would’ve received great reviews. You’ll probably never see it. That’s
It was also greenlit because of the writer's strike. Let's get into the specifics of how bad this
Hedwig’s cast is full of firsts. John Cameron Mitchell had never played a women before, and was extremely concerned that he would offend the transgender community. The near ten years he spent studying on how to portray Hedwig in a realistic and tangible way while sticking with the wild plot paid off. Hedwig has become a trademark LGBTQ film. Stephan Trask and John Cameron Mitchell both knew that they wanted a women to play Hedwig’s husband Yitzhak.

The film I picked for my critique is Red Tails, a historical World War II drama. The movie starred Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard and Gerald Mcraney, was written by John Ridley and Aaron McGruder, better known as the creator of the comic strip “the boondocks”, from a book by John B. Holway, directed by Anthony Hemingway and produced by George Lucas . In this paper the author will show how all elements of filmmaking
When it comes to comic book films it’s always tough to isolate your actual thoughts of the film from your initial fanboy reaction. For example, I still love ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, but I now recognize that the film had a few problems I might have flouted in favor of a kneejerk reaction. In a few weeks people are likely going to feel similarly about this film. Despite what you might have heard, this film isn’t flawless, in fact, it actually has quite a few glaring errors, and it’s likely that a lot of us are going gloss over them due to the immense excitement surrounding this film.
The constant battle between our favorites has shown itself common now more than ever. Who do we like better? What do we like better? What is the absolute best? Are these questions necessary? No. But do they keep our lives interesting? Oh yes. In the spring of every year, there always seems to be a new superhero movie that debuts and leaves us on the edge of our seats, waiting for the next one. This year, we are being blessed with two movies, from two separate corporations, Marvel and DC; which leaves us with the question… Who did it better?
The fantastic four was a movie was made in 2015, Starring the Thing, the Human Torch, Susan Storm, and Mister Fantastic. The Fantastic Four took place in a city I don’t know where it was actually shot. Transported to an alternate universe, four young outsiders gain superhuman powers as they alter their physical form in shocking ways. Reed Richards becomes Mr. Fantastic, able to stretch and twist his body at will, while pal Ben Grimm gains immense strength as the Thing. Johnny Storm becomes the Human Torch, able to control and project fire, while his sister Sue becomes the Invisible Woman. Together, the team must harness their new abilities to prevent Doctor Doom from destroying the Earth.
B. Relevance: Have any of you seen a Spider-Man movie? What about Thor or Iron Man? Very few of us in this room can say we have not seen an action packed Marvel movie at least once. Since its humble beginnings in 1939, Marvel has revolutionized not only the comic book world, but also set the bar incredibly high for all potential superhero movies. Marvel is completely relevant to the yearly cinema culture we find ourselves in the midst of, and continues to grow in popularity.
This indicates that there could be an additional change that the team might still need to make in the film. The report suggests that the major reshoot was done not to add humor to the movie, but to fix certain issues. There are still
In class we watched the Fantastic Four Movie. The movie shows great leadership and human relation skills. The movie Fantastic Four is about a legion that visits a planet called planet zero. While trying to return from the planet the four of them gain superhuman abilities beyond their control.
I have always enjoyed movies. But at some point I started to think of movies as more than just entertainment. I began to view them as a movie critic would, rather than just a casual viewer. Because of this perspective, I think of "Apocalypse Now" as one of the best American made movies I have ever seen. As a student of and an active participant in the late twentieth century media age, I feel justified in making this statement. In my lifetime of observation of American media, including fourteen months of intense movie watching in conjunction with my employment at a local video store, I have had an opportunity to observe a broad sampling of the films, and feel more than qualified to make this statement. By referring to
What make a good movie are a good storyline and its ability to make people laugh, to entertain, as well as its ability to utilize its characters fully throughout the movie. Hence, from Thor: Ragnarok experience, in the Marvel universe the best movie is on that the director is left to do his work in the movie. Apparently, this has been evident in other movies such as the Guardian of the Galaxy, Iron man three as well as the first Avenger.
I initially chosen the movie Guardians of the Galaxy so I can elaborate on what is my favorite superhero film of all time. Being highly rated among other superhero movies, as well as containing an indie vibe, it happens to contain many aspects of film that creates a marvelous movie. Guardians of the Galaxy is an innovative movie in the superhero genre, because it has quirky story, but it somehow brings crazy comedy, middle-aged music, and of course the action-packed fun. I believe this film was a revolutionary idea in the genre and industry. From special effects to music, Guardians of the Galaxy packs a punch with the elements and techniques of a great production, which is why I chose to write about it. I was very confident in choosing Guardians of the Galaxy due to the film aspects of sound, special effects, and the narrative.
Marvel Studios’ movies is like a path to travel on as an audience member (Menard, 2014, p. 28). Across a decade worth of films and tv shows, there has been a there has been more than 60 characters that the Marvel Studios universe contains (Menard, 2014, p. 54). There has been a lot of conflict and character development, because of the multiple events that happens in the other movies (ComicBookCast2,2016). There a lot of example of this happening, such as the new york event in The Avengers (ComicBookCast2,2016). The event in the Avengers spread into the Avengers, Iron man 3 Captain America: Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age
