Journalism is the only source to obtain information to form a personal opinion about events that are happening in society, but often is fueled by sales and viewership that often presents false reports to drive popular opinions. The opinions that are presented to the unaware subscriber or viewer can be dangerous when a person starts to believe in everything that is being presented to them. The expectation of the news media to present only facts is far from the agenda of media. Whereas, the media needs to be profitable like any other corporation. For instance, the media started the Spanish- American war through false journalism as competition between two rival newspapers. William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer were owners of separate New
In the mid-1800s, Spain ruled the island of Cuba. the United States, at that time, received most of Cuba's exports, and they supported the Cuban independence movement; if Cuba was independent, then the United States would benefit from the country. Soon, the big U.S. presses, such as The New York Journal and The New York World, knew that the event was in the people's feelings. They sensationalized their headlines and graphic features to attract readers, which soon was known as "yellow journalism". The press also knew a lot of the reader's interests, and they exaggerated their news. During the January of 1898, the United States sent the USS Maine, which is a battleship, to Havana, which is the capital of Cuba, in order to halt the riots between
During the time before the Spanish-American war occured, the industrial revolution was at an all time high through the United States. The people of America had begun to idolize their nation with increasing nationalism amoungst the country. The drive and purpose for expansion and imperialism was drivin by these feelings. For over one-hundred years, America had taken a back seat to the European powers like Great Britain and Germany, that many Americans felt, should change.
Nowadays journalists have the responsibility to report facts as accurately, objectively, and disinterestedly as is humanly possible. ‘’The, honest, self-disciplined, well-trained reporter seeks to be a propagandist for nothing but the truth’’ (Casey, 1944b).
The main impact that “ Yellow Journalism ” had on the Spanish American War was to push the United States towards getting involved in that war. William Randolph Hearst is famous for having used his newspapers to push for American involvement in the war.
It being the leading source of news since the printing press. We put our faith in the media to report accurate facts unbiasedly. Between 1983 and now the media industry has consolidated from 50 individual companies to 6. That means that though the impression given is that there are a multitude of sources to attain information, the messages being communicated are all one in the same. The limitation of media sources cause a ripple effect of limited information, allowing these companies to control the public’s perception on
It is easy to tell from the illustration that there is a huge war going on, the war between the Union and Confederacy. According to the article, the Union has won the fight in Kentucky. From my perspective, I think the Union represents the armies on the right side because they are virtually dominating the war in the illustration. “In the first place, then, whatever may be the strategical value of our victory, it certainly begins a more active and decisive period of the campaign. “ I find this quote from the article and it kind of match the illustration and it supports my idea. They must attack first in order to get the advantage. It really demonstrates the importance of journalism during the Civil War. The Union shows their victory to the public.
Though 2016 is a time of new technology and innovation, it is still important to consider the history that has come before. It is relevant to understand propaganda during the Spanish Civil War because by understanding this, we actually understand how propaganda functions in today’s world. To get their point across, companies use propaganda and though most people see propaganda as done in one way, it is actually true that there are many methods used by propagandists. By understanding the propaganda use in the Spanish Civil War, we may be able to better understand the consumer-producer relationship. How do companies today suck in consumers to buy their products? This is a question that bothers many psychologists, but the root to understanding
This paper discusses the history of yellow journalism. This paper will explain the becoming of the name, the scandals, individuals and their newspapers that contributed to the rise of yellow journalism, and the involvement of the Spanish-American War.
Yellow Journalism before and during the time of the Spanish-American War was used used to fabricate political events between the Americans and the Spanish and used as a mechanism to go to war with the Spanish. In return, the news agencies profited and capitalized on the sales by selling tons of newspapers. The journalists would write about what was going on over seas and they would exaggerate what was happening. Yellow Journalism brought upon disagreements, deception, and lies, while depicting the Spanish to be some sort of Monster that was trying to destroy America. Yellow Journalism caused havoc across the world and served as a catalysts for the war. Evidently Yellow Journalism is exaggerated reportings on what happened overseas, used as a false propaganda to rile up the Americans, and lastly motivate them to go to war.
Although “Yellow Journalism was not totally responsible for the Spanish American War, by knowing the definition of “Yellow Journalism”, one would conclude this was exactly the type of journalism that aided in the Spanish American War. The term, “The tongue is a powerful weapon” is true but, stories that were written by Journalist Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst spread like wildfire through word of mouth and greatly aided in America’s involvement in the Spanish American War.
To understand what state the modern media system is in, one must firmly understand what bias is. Media bias is present “when a political belief or commercial interest distorts the level of reporting” (“Media Bias” 1). If a political station provides positive or accurate information to only one side, then the station can be considered biased. Another form of bias is known as sensationalism. Sensationalism is the creation of panic or fear by over-reporting or over-inflating individual news stories, often blurring facts or reporting speculation as facts. A modern and familiar example of media
It is no secret that the news has always been known to be bias toward a certain opinion, but experts can trace acts like this all the way back to the nineteenth century in early America (Thornton, 2016). During this time period most of the well-known newspapers were explicitly linked to political parties and economic interest. Respected historian Chilton Williamson writes this about the early 1900’s, “The presentation of facts simply as facts, editors and writers reasoned, cannot accomplish the exalted goal of saving civilization” (Thornton, 2016). But what if a leader comes along and believes that the best thing for their country is to use extreme media bias? In 1933 Adolf Hitler changed the meaning of media bias by completely controlling what people saw and read. Hitler eliminated papers against his control, and promoted the ones in favor. By doing this, he forced people to only see what news was being presented in one way, instead of an accurate and fair representation of the entire news (The Press in the Third Reich). This statement is not insinuating that bias with Nazi Germany is the same as modern America, but it is suggesting that bias amongst media allows for a misrepresentation of the truth to the people.
Newspapers and other forms of news are very vital communication methods in the world today. The goal of news is to sell us their ideas by being biased and talking about how their idea is best. News can give us biased information although, the viewer could do further research on the
Media has been playing a significant role in our daily lives by developing our personalities, enriching our knowledge and providing us with different sorts of information. It has a tremendous power in framing cultural guidelines and shaping political dissertation. If the information provided to the U.S. citizens is distorted, then they cannot make informed decisions on the matters of public policy. Thus, it becomes vital to the American democracy that the news media and its institutions remain unbiased, fair and accurate. Media bias happens when a media systematically and persistently emphasize one particular point of view that is usually below the standards of professional journalism. There can be various reasons for media bias, some of
Thousands of our nation's men and women were fighting for their country, yet the media limited the amount of information that they chose to pass on to the public. Each day the media is faced with the choice of making decisions of what news to pass on, when that news could make a significant difference in someone's life, or in the fate of our nation.
