The first theme is the way in which people declare their allegiance to one another, only to betray their true intentions at a later time. In Animal Farm, the theme of False Allegiance is directly related to the idea that the rulers of the rebellion, The Pigs, eventually mislead the ideals of which they presumably fought, this theme is dramatised in a number of relationships involving the novella’s human characters Frederick, Pilkington and Jones. Frederick and Pilkington, for example, only listened to Jones in the Red Lion because they secretly hoped to gain something from their neighbour’s anguish.
