MUSC 1010
Final Paper The two songs I will be comparing are “Centuries,” by Fall out Boy and “21 Guns,” By Green day. I chose these songs, because I love the bands and even more importantly, I love their music. Not one song is the same, so I chose these songs to research so that I can better understand what I enjoy in a song and what interests me. I first found Fall Out Boy when listening to the radio. After that, I looked them up on YouTube and now they have become one of my favorite musical groups ever. I found out about Green Day while listening to a Pandora Station. I have been listening to these bands for around three years each and have been hooked on every song they release. Fall Out Boy’s music can be defined as

The vocals and guitar kick in at 17 seconds. The vocalist plays his guitar to the line, “Do you know what’s worth fighting for when it’s not worthing dying for?” Still with only the singer playing it goes into the second phrase that has the same melody. At this point in the song, it is at a medium tempo. The melody is homophonic and conjunct. Then the third phrase has a accelerando and crescendo and is when the hook starts and the entire bands joins in to the line of, “One, 21 Gun, lay down your arms, give up the fight,” it then repeats the melody with a different line and the same hook, “One, 21 Guns, throw up your arms into the sky, you and I…” When the hook is over, it goes back to the first melody, but with drums, doing a decrescendo and ritardando until the beat is back to being just the vocalist with his guitar. This pattern repeats until the end of the song. The song is played in common time. It is homophonic and has bits of monophony and imitative polyphony. There is syncopation on beats 2 and 4. The song is consonant and conjunct. It is played in major key. The tempo varies on which phrase is being played, the hook is closer to allegro, while the solo phrases are closer to adagio. The dynamics are piano and then jump to forte in the main melody. The song ends with birds chirping to address the 21-gun
If you had to make a choice with nothing to choose from, how could you choose? Would your choice be the right decision since their is no guideline to your future? Listening to music can relieve stress and even a provide a guideline to the right choices. In the book The Outsiders written by S.E. Hinton, the Curtis brothers and other greasers have difficult choices they encounter that relate their life to the song "Give Me Back My Hometown" by Eric Church. The song relates to the actions of the boys, the dreams the greasers have of becoming better, and the need to own the streets in their area.
This is a song that I believe will always make you feel patriotic and think of the military. I can’t imagine thinking of anything else while you listen to this song. It catches your attention with the snare drum fanfare and then the trumpet sounding. You can’t help but to stop and listen.
Twenty One Pilots is much calmer than My Chemical Romance, focusing more on a despaired feeling rather than the angry feeling My Chemical Romance often conveys in their music (the fact Twenty One Pilots never curses further enforces this idea). Of course, this is not to say that Twenty One Pilots never gets a bit angrier in their songs, (or that My Chemical Romance can’t get sad and slow), but whenever they do, it’s a more passive aggressive kind of angry (for example, the song Fairly Local). Like I said, more despaired. Kind of like that one really scary person and whenever they get angry they get really quiet and you know they mean business. Twenty One Pilots makes music of all genres; from gospel to screamo to ukulele to rap, they make music from every genre (except for country; I’m not sure
A slow universal crescendo is audible until bar 29, when the dynamic then holds at a fortississimo (fff) – ‘as loud as possible’. Tr.1 provides a rest from the constant dissonant chords in bars 40-42 before returning to the regular rhythmic figure. This opening successfully displays the unpredictable intensity and discomfort of war through is constant rising and falling in dynamics and unexpectedly changing texture. At the end of bar 67 (after B1), all instruments quickly crescendo to another fff, before moving directly into the next section (C1 – see figure 2.2). This presents a triumphant mood through the melody of the brass instruments moving strictly along the D major scale (making regular use of its’ tonic, octave tonic, subdominant and dominant notes), and the lack of minor harmonies and dissonant intervals so commonly used in A1 and B1. The segment slowly begins to incorporate these dissonant harmonies in canon, bringing about an eventual sense of dread as the dynamic builds to a gradual fortissimo (ff) crescendo. Following this crescendo, all instruments participate in an ff universal decrescendo, combining to create an irregular Am (not native to the tonic chord) on a lower register (predominantly A2).
Pete Wentz is the lead guitarist of the alternative rock band Fall Out Boy. While Fall Out Boy itself stands against violence, drugs, and bullying, they still make music that does not always to relate to that. Pete Wentz often makes speeches during concerts and interviews about success and failure that explain how to deal with both. He involves his fans heavily in his life and helps them through many issues, as does the
As a band, Aerosmith is one of the few rock bands that have minimal changes to actual band members. The original band members were Steven Tyler, Ray Tabano, Joey Kramer, Joe Perry, and Tom Hamilton. Eventually, Tabano was replaced by Brad Whitford. From 1979 to 1984, they had a five-year break. Whitford and Perry left temporarily and were replaced by Rick Dufay and Jimmy Crespo. In the spring of 1984, Whitford and Perry returned. Since its inception, Aerosmith has used various touring musicians.
Written and performed by vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong, the song 21 Guns is the sixteenth track on Green Day's eighth studio album entitled 21st Century Breakdown. Throughout the song, Armstrong expresses his concern regarding the growing but tragic acts of war and violence in America. The singer is clearly horrified and appalled by the lack of communication used to resolve major issues. Instead, Armstrong focuses on the revolting methods deliberated utilized to resolve conflict. He emphasizes the particularly heavy subject matter by directly addressing the listener as if he or she have experienced war first-hand. In an attempt to deter or at the very least lessen the means of violence to solve violence, Armstrong illustrates not only the physical
The two songs I have chosen for comparison are: Brick House by the Commodores, and Sexy Bitch by David Guetta Featuring Akon. Both songs are about a beautiful, curvaceous woman that the singers find to be very attractive. These two songs were released almost forty-two years apart and are from two very different genres.
The two songs, I will be comparing are Taylor Swift "Blank Space" and Adele " Hello. In the blank space lyrics, it speaks about a girl who gets too attached to things that happen in her life and tends to seem a little odd. Some might even say she gets a bit obsessive. Though the lyrics are a bit strange, the song's overall tone is catchy.
Fall Out Boy is a boy band which consists of 5 guys, Patrick Stump, Pete Wentz, Andy Hurley, Joe Trohman, and Ben Rose. The music genre they are in is Bubblegum rock which isn't exactly rock it's a little softer than that. They are a mainstream band that almost everyone knows about, in fact they had to apologize for one of their songs being too mainstream. Sadly the band broke up in 2010, but then three years later in 2013 they got back together.
“The Boys in the Band”, is a play about male homosexual relationships and the revealing truths of being gay in the 1960s. The play gives audiences a distinct perspective of homosexuality on the stage up until that time. The setting is in a New York City apartment that is owned by Michael. He and his gay friends are preparing a birthday party for Harold. Alan McCarthy, a former college roommate of Michael, also shows up at the party unexpectedly. In this paper, we will focus on Alan and Harold and their behaviors and impacts in the play.
To define a film by a certain genre, there are several elements and signatures that a film will display in order to signify its place amongst the genre. A film from the gangster genre is characterized by violence and lawlessness of american capitalism and The American Dream. The short lived classical era of the gangster genre in Hollywood is also greatly influenced by the production code which manifested the iconic moral narrative of the gangster genre. William A. Wellman’s 1931 film The Public Enemy can be considered a film of the gangster genre when one examines the conflict with the American dream, the rise and fall of the protagonist Tom Powers, as well as the visual storytelling employed to support the narrative.
Compare and contrast two works from the same genre which were written at least a generation or half a century apart. Consider and explain similarities and differences with regard to musical style and historical context.
The song "The message" by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five depicts the struggle of young black adults growing up in society. The struggle to make it out of poverty can be compared to survival of the fittest in a jungle. Only the strong would survive and adapt to the changes to fit in. Trying their best to make a betterment with whatever little society offers. Being a young black African American in the early 1980's was not easy. It was easier to live the fast life and gain fast money by being part of the drug community. Drugs, guns, and money was glamorized and this is what the young adults looked at as a means of getting rich. In the songs, a young man talks about how he is trying hard to hold on to the little bit of sanity he has left in his soul. He talks about the struggle he endures while trying not to get pushed over the edge. He was born an innocent child who's blind to the ways of mind kind. Growing up he faced many challenges and had to fight
