Rome was considered one of the utmost powerful empire during its time, but why did it fall near the height of its power? The Fall of Rome was a conversational topic among several historians. This paper will state this cause in Documents A,B,and C, which will explain 3 key points that led Rome to downfall. It is unclear why the poison inside the empire was cultivated, but might be the leadership, strategy, and defense. During Rome’s slow decline, the early problems were shown in leadership. . After numerous deaths, the years 235-285 CE became a time of despair for Rome. Examples of this was how various leaders ruled from 1-2 years, but a few lasted a few months, according to the chart in Document A. Gordian I & II ruled as co leaders, but lasted about less than a year, but Gordian I died of suicide, which could of been an effect of the constant leaders taking over the empire. Without a strong and stable leadership, the people of the empire began to stir. Assassination was a main cause of death among the emperors. There was too much assassination, it meant that there were no stable leadership to hold the empire. Nevertheless, there were deeper problems to worry about as the army too, started to deteriorate. …show more content…
With no strength, the armor they wore seemed heavy, as the Roman Historian Vegetius states from an excerpt in Document B. The military men started to ask to remove the breastplate, and later removed their helmets. With no armor protecting them in battle, the numbers grew short,as countless soldiers fell from numerous wounds. Rome tried to fix the problem by conscription, but failed to enforce it as numerous categories were excluded from the draft. With no soldiers to defend Rome, the invaders viewed this as an opportunity to attack, which was the third problem that played in Rome’s
When Rome is brought up, most people think about powerful rulers. But near the end of Rome the rulers were not liked nor good ruler. From 235(common era) to 285 (common era), 22 rulers ruled Rome. (Document A) 13 of the 22 rulers during that time period were assassinated. (Document A) In this 50 year time period, four emperors were killed in battle. (Document A) Since Rome was so
The great Roman Empire expanded across all of Europe and into the Middle East. Its military was one of the finest. With major trading in Africa and Britain, the economy flourished with brining many citizens a healthy income. With amazing advancements in culture and technology, Roman society was at its finest. During the Pax Romana, the Romans had 200 years of peace and good ruling by level headed dictators and emperors. Despite Rome’s greatness in all of these areas, Rome would eventually fall. Surprisingly all of these qualities that led up to a flourishing empire were the same ones that led to its demise. As Germanic tribes invaded, the military weakened and the government became unstable.
Imagine you are in the Roman empire and about every year your emperor dies from either an assassination or suicide. Your military and government are starting to grow a plentiful amount of problems which are progressively getting worse leading to Rome's fall. The primary reasons for the fall of Rome were political assassinations, military problems, and foreign invasions.
All the Romans began to become very lazy including the army. A Roman historian Vegetius states in document B, that the army first complained that the breastplates were too heavy to wear. They asked the emperor and they set aside the breastplates. They got rid of the helmets soon after. The soldiers went to fight with no armor.
Their military had become week from them leaving behind their old methods of using armor, protection, and their prepared mindset. In Document B it says * “armor began to seem heavy since the soldiers rarely ever wore it. Therefore, they first asked the emperor to set aside the breastplates … and then the helmets”. With the soldiers not being protected, many of them died from wounds. In the picture on Document C, it shows * the path
They felt unprotected in battle so they would run away. This verifies that military mistakes were the government's fault and the soldiers fault. They stopped training and stopped wearing armor and the government agreed to that and they didn't have enough soldiers. The Emperor agreed to all of those and that is one of the reasons why Rome fell. Additionally, in concerning military matters Roman historian Vegetius, it states “But when because of negligence and laziness, parade ground drills were abandoned, the customary armor began to seem” heavy since the soldiers rarely ever wore it.”
Rome, one of the most enormous and powerful empires to ever exist also eventually crumbled. There are many beliefs to why this happened, such as the increasingly weak boundaries, lack of assurance on the emperor's, an increasingly horrible economics system, and a backlash on the new origin of Christianity to name a few. What was known as one of the biggest empires known to date also eventually came to it’s unfortunate end.
One of the many noteworthy reasons Rome came to its demise was the unstable nature of their military. The Romans were rarely using their armor to shield themselves and it was getting tiresome to wear the armor. The emperor then did not require the use of body armor anymore, “Therefore, they first asked the emperor to set aside the breastplates… and then the helmets.” (page 15). Because of the decision to cast away the breastplates and helmets, it made it effortless to wound and kill the Romans with skilled archers, such as the Huns (Doc D). Another pivotal fault was the draft, “The exempted categories were...numerous” (Doc B). Draft exemptions meant that not enough men were fighting and too many were lazing around. Even bakers and cooks were not required to serve under martial law(Doc B). Because of these mistakes, the Roman military became weak. Not having enough members on their command,
Rome was once a powerful aristocracy empire that was feared and didn't want to mess with but down the line things went wrong time and time again like the negligence of the army, the constant natural disasters, and the treatment of their citizens, because of this happening Rome eventually fell and was no more.
In Document B it is said that in the Roman Empire’s past footsoldiers wore breast plates and helmets for protection. The soldiers began to become lazier and thought that the armor was too heavy for them. Rome fought the Goths without any armor and soldiers were often killed by archers. Rome needed as much protection as possible and with the number of soldiers decreasing drastically such protection was not possible. To have a lasting an empire, the military needs to have soldiers who accustom to harsh labor and who are industrious, Rome did not have this, which led to its decline. Also, an empire needs to have regular conscriptions, which people
Despite Rome’s impressive amount of money, people, core values, and supposed strength, Rome fell indefinitely due to lower-class problems, foreign invasions, and legal injustice. Because of its lower-class
“Fifty thousand people had lost their lives in the flood.”(Document F) This disaster shook the empire, which consequently made the citizens lose self confidence and their spirit. Without confidence, they would’ve been easily defeated by others rival tribes. Deadly illness such as measles arrived Rome, killing three-fourths of the population.(Document F) It was hard for Rome to find other Roman citizens to join the army since many people died from diseases or natural disasters. All in all, the natural disasters killed made people, therefore made citizens lose-confidence and there weren't enough citizens to be soldiers since many people were killed from
The military might of Rome was second to none in its prime. Victorious battle after battle did nothing but
For a long period of time, Rome seemed like an unstoppable empire. It conquered the majority of the land surrounding it, including Greece, Turkey, Iraq, and many of its other neighboring countries. It seemed as though Rome would conquer the entire world, as it was the center of it, until it began to decline in 476 C.E. The very aspects that made it so successful were the ones that caused its collapse. Various political, religious, and economic reasons caused its downfall. The fact that the entire economy of Rome collapsed and money became worthless was a major reason for the empire’s collapse. In addition, the loss of a common religion and lack of efficient ruling in relation to its vast territory affected the empire. The Roman
The Roman Empire is considered one of the most powerful empire in history. It influenced many cultures and societies. The Roman army was feared throughout Europe because it was vast in size. Even though it had many problems throughout its reign, it had lasted for over five hundred years The Roman Empire demonstrated the strength needed to rule so many other countries and cities, setting the foundation for other governments (modeling for other countries?) .
