The usual Orwellian dystopia of a big-brother state and censorship is often compared with Fahrenheit 451’s content; however, I believe the two perspectives and purposes of George Orwell and Ray Bradbury to be very much different (as Bradbury states in the interview in the back of the book).I chose to write about the theme of conformity and individuality and what Bradbury was communicating through his characters regarding that topic. As a result of that choice, I have found Captain Beatty to be a perfect character to focus on in order to argue that: Although there may be arguments stating that the society Bradbury depicts is one of mindless collectivism, Captain Beatty’s interactions with Montag and the holistic behaviour of the people illustrate the dangers of a highly individualized society devoid of positive conformity. The source of this textual analysis will be the book, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.
Captain Beatty’s character is one of intriguing qualities of which one of them can be his candid way of discussing how the social order that exists in Fahrenheit 451 is organized. In this particular section of the book, Montag had been clearly influenced to a certain degree by his interactions with Clarisse McClellan and was being confronted by Beatty about these obvious changes. Beatty is an important source for gathering insightful information concerning the reasoning behind certain aspects of this dystopian society; in this case, he is discussing education. Captain
Society has a powerful influence over individuals’ actions, but that power and influence is not carried over to an individuals’ mindset. In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the two characters Faber and Beatty have very similar personalities. Though the way of society has drastically influenced how each responds accordingly to social standards. Faber has followed the path that society has paved for him, but he wants to be the man that can help change society’s view of books. Beatty is fulfilling his duties as fire chief, and is seen as a power head, though he may not be as happy as society depicts him to be. Both characters are well read,
Of all literary works regarding dystopian societies, Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 is perhaps one of the most bluntly shocking, insightful, and relatable of them. Set in a United States of the future, this novel contains a government that has banned books and a society that constantly watches television. However, Guy Montag, a fireman (one who burns books as opposed to actually putting out fires) discovers books and a spark of desire for knowledge is ignited within him. Unfortunately his boss, the belligerent Captain Beatty, catches on to his newfound thirst for literature. A man of great duplicity, Beatty sets up Montag to ultimately have his home destroyed and to be expulsed from the city. On the other hand, Beatty is a much rounder
In Fahrenheit 451, the citizens are filled with irrelevant information just so they wouldn’t have to think on their own, and possibly offend other people with their thoughts and the government is intolerant, or not tolerant of views and/or beliefs of people. When Captain Beatty is speaking to Montag as his house, he talks
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray bradbury is a story about conformity. Guy Montag is a fireman who lives in a conformed society and he meets few people that will end up changing him. Clarisse is a 17 year old girl who moves into the neighborhood and changes his view on society within a matter of a few days until she is killed. One of the cases the firemen get is an old lady in a house who breaks the law by owning books and she becomes an eye-opener for Montag. Montag’s superior, Captain Beatty expresses his views on Montag which will lead to him getting pushed toward cold blooded murder. In Fahrenheit 451 Guy Montag is affected by Clarisse, the old lady in the house and Beatty by their deaths in different ways.
Montag’s and Beatty’s characteristics and views towards their society and government are similar and different in many ways in the book Fahrenheit 451. Montag’s and Beatty’s personality is best described as being a moral and narcissistic in the beginning of the book because they do not see the difference between right and wrong and they only care for themselves. They just do what they are told to do from the authorities no matter how wrong the task may be. Montag eventually changes as a human being, he becomes open-minded and sees how wrong he had been this whole time. But Beatty’s personality never changes throughout the book.
Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 is a book established on a disordered culture in which the government gets along with the people via traditionalism. Conformity is the method of matching beliefs and attitudes. Characters such as Beatty, Mildred, and others obey the government since that is how their culture exists. The government destroys any type of individuality a person has and does not tolerate any type of education since they will come up with a way to reprimand an individual. As it is shown at the beginning of the story, individuality outlines the dissimilarities of an individual by creating an exceptional personality of a person such as the one Clarisse McClellan disclosed to Montag.
One key passage that illustrates the theme of control in Fahrenheit 451 is when Captain Beatty explains why books are banned and burnt to Guy Montag. Beatty argues that books
In the dystopian science fiction novel Fahrenheit 451 (1995), Ray Bradbury warns that the growing use of technology is augmenting human ignorance. Bradbury supports his warning by using symbolism and dynamic and round characters as well as an extreme case to demonstrate what could happen if humans are not cautious in their actions. Bradbury’s purpose is to alert humans of the evils of censorship in order to prevent similar events from occurring. His intended audience appears to be mature young adults who are willing to listen because his tone is serious and foreboding and he challenges modern ways of life. Bradbury uses the characters of Captain Beatty and Professor Faber to assist Guy Montag, the protagonist, in his transition from ignorance to knowledge.

The book “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury was about a fireman name Guy Montag. Montag does the opposite from what regular fireman do. He starts fires instead of putting them out. Books in Montag's society is forbidden to read and if caught reading the book would be set on fire. Instead of reading, that society watches large amounts of television as big as the wall and listens to the radio attached to their ears. It was not normal for pedestrians to talk and have meaningful conversations until Montag met a teenager name Clarisse. Clarisse was a strange girl that opened up Montag thoughts. She asked him about his work and what made him become a fireman. One question that really got him to think was the statement “Are you happy”(Bradbury 10). Montag believed that Clarisse was odd. She wasn’t like the norm of the society. She read books, walked the city like a pedestrian and, had meaningful conversations. After that encounter with Clarisse a number of events started to happen to him; his wife Mildred tried to commit suicide with prescription pills, a woman that hid books in her home decides to burn a live with her books, and Clarisse is killed in a car accident., With all these tragic events occuring, Montag tries to find a solution to this epidemic. The society has become controlled from power, a sense of censorship. Bradbury has shown his viewpoint of society through this novel.
Fahrenheit 451 written by, Ray Bradbury was published in 1953 symbolizing the idea of a modern dystopia through the perspective of Guy Montag. Throughout the book, Bradbury's uses cautionary tones that come from the patterns of America's cultural shifts in the 1950s as more people develop a sense of armed resistance and opposition towards the government's suspicions. In many ways, Bradbury predicted behaviors that saturate much of modern American culture.
