Thesis: In both Fahrenheit 451, a novel by Ray Bradbury, and Matched, a novel by Ally Condie, both Cassia and Guy feel the pressures to conform to society. Through symbolism, both characters recognize the negative impacts of censorship and find that censorship narrows people’s understanding of the world. Both Cassia and Guy become knowledge seeking individuals who believe that all citizens deserve the freedom of knowledge because without knowledge people cannot improve upon mistakes and better their lives.
“There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them” -Ray Bradbury. In the past there were events that affected book writers. People will get together to burn books because they thought it was inappropriate or they were against their literature. Montag is a fireman in a futuristic society who would start fires instead of put them out. After he meets Clarisse a young girl different from all teenagers in that society Montag will find himself doing things he never did before. Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury, depicts the oppressiveness of American society. As the author describes the situation, he utilizes various symbols to expound on one of his focal ideas, censorship. One of the most prominent symbols is the Salamander. In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury uses Salamander to signify maturity or transformation, fear, and fire. This is significant because it relates to the devious nature of the government and how they manipulate society.
My Fahrenheit 451 essay was written around January and had many revisions to it. At the time I would have a really hard time beginning my assertion. I never really knew how to start my paragraphs off and It took me a lot of time to do. I remember looking through the book various times just to find the perfect quote only to find it on one of the very first pages. As always i would check over my essay and constantly correct it. In this piece of work I was definitely most proud of my essay title which was ¨The dangers of Censorship: how censorship affects the society and their relationships in Fahrenheit 451¨. It was the first thing I wrote down and like every other thing I ever written; changed several times before I decided it was perfect. Another
In the novel, Fahrenheit 451, critically acclaimed author Ray Bradbury asks the controversial question, what would a world where censorship of creative and differing Ideas is the norm resemble? In Fahrenheit 451 Bradbury envisions a dystopian America in which not only books are censored, but personal thoughts and individuality are constrained in this world as well. Although there are many ways in which Bradbury presents and develops the themes in Fahrenheit 451, the most effective way Bradbury does this is through deft characterizations, he does this specifically through Clarisse Mcclellan and Mildred Montag
Government interferences commonly occur both in Fahrenheit 451 and the real world. The censorship is to keep the population unaware of the truth of what happens throughout the world, and corruption of the government. All the different ways to censor something happen to accomplish one goal, to keep the public away from the negative truths about themselves. Several events in history show that this is a fairly popular habit among different governments and nations. Although these events are real life situations, Ray Bradbury is able to broadcast these thoughts in Fahrenheit 451. Ray Bradbury’s overall statement in the book shows the truth on how the government treats the public.

A famous educator and historian by the name Alfred Whitney Griswold once said, “Books won’t stay banned. They won’t burn. Ideas won’t go to jail… the only weapon against bad ideas is better ideas” (Webster’s). Censorship is the practice of examining pieces of information and taking out the unacceptable parts. Governments use censorship to create perfect societies, but deep down, they cannot censor how people really think and feel. In reality, censorship is a form of destruction that ruins valuable information. In the book, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the movie Pleasantville by Gary Ross, and the article "Freedom To Read Is Still In Danger" by The Huffington Post, the authors share a similar theme of how governments use censorship. In Fahrenheit 451, the society uses censorship through burning books. The government in the movie Pleasantville does not want people to have feelings. Lastly, in the article, the United States has the idea that some
with many other people, began to depend on these programs, as if they were addicted to
Ray Bradbury criticizes the censorship of the early 1950's by displaying these same themes in a futuristic dystopia novel called Fahrenheit 451. He tries to show the readers how terrible censorship and mindless conformity is by writing about this in his novel.
Have you ever The world-famous movie, Remember the Titans, cost $30 million to make in the year 2000. This documentary will demonstrate the importance of the allegories to modern times, and will not be as costly but will display an equally as important message and theme. Many themes present in Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 are shown to be relevant today. Since Plato and Bradbury both emphasized the negative effects of censorship on society, modern times must become aware of how it affects their everyday lives. To prevent modern society from facing the same problems as the allegories, we must demonstrate the dangers of censorship to educate humankind.
