In July 2016, Ezekiel Elliott, running back of the Dallas Cowboys, was accused by his ex-girlfriend of physically attacking her several times, including pushing her into a wall. This woman posted several photos on social media of bruises on her body that she claimed were made by Elliot during the attacks. Although no charges were pressed and he was not arrested, the NFL conducted an investigation on Elliott and the alleged abuse over the following year; after a thorough thirteen - month long investigation, he was officially suspended by the NFL on August 11 for six games. Ezekiel Elliott has denied all these claims and stated that the woman’s bruises were obtained in a bar fight, and many fans believe the victim is falsifying her story to gain …show more content…
Many fans also believed that the six - game suspension was much too harsh, since there are only sixteen games in an NFL season, and the witnesses had not backed up the woman’s claims. However, investigators confirmed that the images of the woman’s injuries were consistent with her story, and also looked into another incident involving Elliott: this March during a St. Patrick’s Day parade, he pulled a woman’s top down, prompting the NFL to send Elliott a letter, reprimanding him and saying he showed a lack of respect for women. Clearly, Elliott has a history of improper and inappropriate behavior. The NFL really wanted to have all the facts on this case due to criticism of the handling of previous domestic violence cases. For example, in 2015 former Giants kicker Josh Brown was arrested for a misdemeanor domestic violence charge and was only suspended for one game. However, it was later discovered that Brown had sorrowfully admitted in journals and letters to friends and family how he had abused his wife, who had previously refused to speak with NFL officials. Due to this lack of initial evidence, the NFL had been heavily criticized for giving a quick one - game
Arian Foster is one of the best remaining free agents on the market. For years, Foster has dominated the league as one of the best running backs, but after an injury to his Achilles, the Texans released him. With that said, I still believe in the right situation the 29-year old Foster can still be a significant contributor to an NFL team, specifically one these three teams.
Under current NFL policy, first-time DUI offenders are subject to a two-game suspension and the marijuana possession likely led to the additional game. Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount was with a member of the Steelers and in Bell’s at the time of the arrest and was suspended one game for his marijuana possession charge.
Quarterback Nick Foles just signed a two-year extension with the St. Louis Rams. The deal is worth $24.5 million, not including the $1.5 million remaining from his rookie contract. Foles still has one-year left on his contract, bringing the terms to three years $26 million. His new deal was completed on the night if August 7th. "I want to be here. I want to focus on my teammates. I want to be all-in, and I don't want to have to worry about contract issues," Foles told the media. He continued,"I am very fortunate to be here. Im fortunate to have a contract. Im very thankful." The quarterback played for the Philadelphia Eagles last year, before he was traded to the Rams on the off-season. In his three seasons with the Eagles, Foles threw for 6,753 yards, 46 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions. Foles has yet to play a game for the Rams, but he apparently has done enough in practice to impress head coach Jeff Fisher. Fisher told reporters that in the short period of time that Foles has been with the team, he has showcased tremendous leadership qualities. "It us what he's done on the field early in his career thus far in the league and what he's done for us since he's got
The Bears had glaring needs on defense leading up to the 2017 NFL Draft, so it was truly baffling when commissioner Roger Goodell announced quarterback Mitchell Trubisky was headed to Chicago with the second-overall pick.
Alternative solution one, suspending Hardy for five games, was shown to be the least effective option. It received the lowest numbers when I evaluated the effect it would have on each decision criteria. There would be many disadvantages if Richardson chose this solution. For the factor, fans’ responses to the punishment, I rated it a one out of ten. It is evident that Ray Rice’s two-game suspension was seen as too mild of a punishment. If Richardson gave Hardy a five-game suspension, there could be another backlash because of the fans’ responses. This would create an entirely new problem for the NFL, damaging their reputation. The Carolina Panther’s income would also worsen. In Exhibit 3, it is clear that the Panther’s income is extremely dependent on their merchandise, ticket sales and broadcasting. If Hardy is only suspended for five games, the team could lose support from many fans. This would cause their broadcasting, ticket sales and merchandise to decline, which would have a
In the article”NFL Apologize to Women for Ray Rice” Roxanne Jones who was the former Vice President of the NFL and national lecturer on sports , is trying to convince others that the domestic violence act Ray Rice committed against his former fiancé Janay Palmer was a more severe act than he was held accountable for. She is addressing an argument to Roger Goodell , the NFL commissioner ,that Rices’ suspension from playing football should have been longer than just two games. Jones believes the suspension what unjustified because Rice was seen on camera dragging Palmer who was unconscious at the time out of a casino elevator. Jones compares this domestic violence act to an animal abuse crime, which occurred
I think the New York Giants should pick Derrick Henry for the NFL draft. Reason one is According to my data Mr.Henry time for the forty yard dash was in 4.54 to 4.56 the shortest time range and my forty yard dash bar graph only two people are in that range and everyone else's time pales in comparison with a mean 4.664 and ten point margin .On my Vertical jump dot plot, Mr.henry was the high extreme with numbers like 37.0 which no one else achieved and compared to the mean of 34.65 and a median of 34.389 Mr.henry did fairly better . On my last set of data which is sixty yards shuttle histogram, there were only two intervals of 11.50-11.53 and Mr.henry was one of the intervals and does much better compared with a mean of 11.709 and a median
Ray Rice will need to find a job which I think since he plays football and he makes over 7 million a year he won't be used to having a job so he will go broke. Abuse is not accepted from a football player that plays in the NFL because if a football player has been accused abusing or killing someone and if they don't have proof, then the NFL won’t do much about it, but if they had a testimony like the video of him abusing his wife than he can or will be kicked out of the NFL and his contract will be seized. The NFL is very serious about criminal or abuse
Many believe his punishment should have been more severe than a termination. An article about the tragic event states, “Running back Ray Rice was released by the Baltimore Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the NFL on Monday, the same day a shocking video surfaced showing the NFL star knocking out his future wife with a punch in February” (Almasy and Martin). Ray Rice harmed his NFL career by not being courteous of his own fiancée’s life. Rice and Palmer married shortly after the video was exposed on the internet. Putting your hands on others is a sign of disrespect, especially if it is someone that you care about.
Though, as the league seems to move forward with concussion polices, there are still hiccups. In particular, one game in the league’s season opener exemplifies it. Carolina Panthers superstar quarterback and reigning Most Valuable Player Cam Newton was illegally hit with multiple helmet-to-helmet collisions. There was no penalties given as he continued the game. After public scrutiny, the league and its player union announced they will each examine the concussion protocol.
After reading this post several times, the author made numerous points on why there should be way more research on how concussions and domestic violence in the NFL can be linked together. There has not been too much research of how the concussions and the domestic violence cases in the NFL can be connected to each other. But throughout the years, the NFL has a history of dodging and ignoring these domestic violence cases with their players. From the league doing this, it throws shade on the NFL and makes them look bad as whole. One other thing that NFL has been ignoring many years is the concussion situation and how it takes a huge toll on the players who suffer from the concussions. Also throughout the post, the author gives examples of cases
Ray Rice didn't acknowledge the fact that his way was drunk and she needed to cool down for a Sec. They should of taking this situation where they can solve it another way, then going to court, going to hail or even get suspended from the NFL. For each of the situation, I think they could put Ray and his fiancée in a rehab or an anger management center so that it can help them out throughout the process. If you can tell how the judge and the NFL have taken it too far from the situation. Instead of him going to jail, he could've been on probation and learn from his mistakes. The NFL and the teammates can help him to accomplish his goals by talking to him, explaining how to not put your hands on any type of women, focus on his anger so that he can control it. Mange throughout the whole year without any domestic violence. Now he needs to learn that one day his daughter will find out
The New York Times refers to the event on Friday September 4th where two football players from John Jay High School, attacked Robert Watts, the official for the game. Texas is known for their crazed passion for football and it's sad that bad behavior has given it a bad name. The two students have been suspended and could possibly face criminal charges. Along with the players, assistant coach Mack Bree supposedly said that “this guy needs to pay for cheating us” and the two high schoolers did something about it. Bree, as well as the two players involved, are suspended from football and the school. After the incident, the two players made assertions that Watts used racial slurs. In solving the matter the University Interscholastic League is
Since much of a player’s life is manage by his team, whenever a player obtains an injury, all of the player’s medical treatments are handled by the team and the team doctor. Furthermore, the organization is required to report that an injury has occurred and the type of injury. The doctors responsible for treating the players should be focused on regaining the player’s health and strength so the player can continue with his life and football career as quick as possible with no long term effects. However, this idea does not seem to be a reality among NFL teams. Many NFL doctors have been obeying the directions of the same stingy owners that neglected Dexter Manley. With this direction, NFL doctors have been losing sight of any concept of ethics, and the doctors have been aiming to get the players back on the field as soon as possible. This aim does not solely affect the treatment of players, but also the reporting of injuries. For example, Calvin Johnson, an All-Pro wide receiver and future Hall of Famer for the Lions, could not even count the number of concussions he has had. In fact, when he was asked about whether or not he had an exact number he answered “It’s simple to get a concussion, you know. … I don’t know how many I’ve had over my career, you know, but I’ve definitely had my fair share” (qtd in “Calvin Johnson’s Retirement”).
Though this NFL conduct is in the light, it is unnecessary because the U.S. criminal justice system has the ability to end the professional sports careers of society’s worst criminals. Everyone asked themselves how could such a successful, talented person throw their opportunity away like this? Crimes from the past always catch up and come to light in the justice system. The NFL from now on is trying to prevent incidents like this from happening from making their off field standards stronger, and making consequences stronger that come with
